Activity-tracking applications, where people record and upload information about their location-based activities (e.g., the routes of their activities), are increasingly popular. Such applications enable users to share information and compete with their friends on activity-based social networks but also, in some cases, to obtain discounts on their health insurance premiums by proving they conduct regular fitness activities. However, they raise privacy and security issues: the service providers know the exac

It is a well-known fact that the progress of personal communication devices leads to serious concerns about privacy in general, and location privacy in particular. As a response to these issues, a number of Location-Privacy Protection Mechanisms (LPPMs) ha ...

Wireless communication enables a broad spectrum of applications, ranging from commodity to tactical systems. Neighbor discovery (ND), that is, determining which devices are within direct radio communication, is a building block of network protocols and applications, and its vulnerability can severely compromise their functionalities. A number of proposals to secure ND have been published, but none have analyzed the problem formally. In this paper, we contribute such an analysis: We build a formal model capt

NOVELTY - The method involves generating observation and validation code in response to defined events, the code generating traces of the defined events. The trace is sent to report an occurrence of detected event by the code after detecting the occurrence of the event at run-time. Information includes the occurrence order and location of the detected event occurs is carried by the trace. USE - Used for on-line testing the middleware based, distributed application software during run-time in telecommunicati

We focus on packet video delivery, with an emphasis on the quality of service perceived by the end-user. A video signal passes through several subsystems, such as the source coder, the network and the decoder. Each of these can impair the information, either by data loss or by introducing delay. We describe how each of the subsystems can be tuned to optimize the quality of the delivered signal, for a given available bit rate in the network. The assessment of end-user quality is not trivial. We present recen

Medical studies are usually time consuming, cumbersome and extremely costly to perform, and for exploratory research, their results are also difficult to predict a priori. This is particularly the case for rare diseases, for which finding enough patients i ...

We propose a formal model of rational exchange and exchange protocols in general, which is based on game theory. In this model, an exchange protocol is represented as a set of strategies in a game that is played by the protocol parties and the network that they use to communicate with each other. Within this model, we give a formal definition for rational exchange and various other properties of exchange protocols, including fairness. In particular, rational exchange is defined in terms of a Nash equilibriu

In many envisioned mobile ad hoc networks, nodes are expected to periodically beacon to advertise their presence. In this way, they can receive messages addressed to them or participate in routing operations. Yet, these beacons leak information about the n ...

Sensor networks are large scale networks of low-power devices that collaborate in order to perform a given task. The sensors are limited in battery energy, capacity and computational power. In recent years, researchers have proposed several protocols for s ...

Based on the notion of event-based behavioral abstraction (EBBA) we specify properties of object-oriented distributed systems in linear time temporal logic. These properties are then observed at system run-time and it is checked whether or not the system violates the specified behavioral constraints. In our approach, several steps in the testing process can be automized: instrumenting the source code, constructing test-oracles and generating an observer. Taking an industrial example as basis, we discuss how

Location privacy has been extensively studied over the last few years, especially in the context of location-based services where users purposely disclose their location to benefit from convenient context-aware services. To date, however, little attention ...

Vehicular communication (VC) systems are being developed primarily to enhance transportation safety and efficiency. Vehicle-to-vehicle communication, in particular, frequent cooperative awareness messages or safety beacons, has been considered over the pas ...

In wireless systems, neighbor discovery (ND) is a fundamental building block: determining which devices are within direct radio communication is an enabler for networking protocols and a wide range of applications. To thwart abuse of ND and the resultant compromise of the dependent functionality of wireless systems, numerous works proposed solutions to secure ND. Nonetheless, until very recently, there has been no formal analysis of secure ND protocols. We close this gap in [24], but we concentrate primaril

With rapid advances in multimedia processing technologies, and in high bandwidth network technologies, new kinds of multimedia applications are now emerging. These applications require real-time, multimedia, and multipoint interactions involving multiple communicating entities and leading to a need of more sophisticated communication control functionalities. In this paper, a generic integrated and flexible service management architecture for multimedia multipoint communications is proposed, which offers thr

Inter-Vehicular Communications (IVC) are a cornerstone of the future intelligent transportation systems. A crucial enabling component of IVC is its security and privacy. Indeed, as vehicular computing systems become interconnected, there will be new venues ...

Short Message Service (SMS) has become extremely popular in many countries, and represents a multi-billion dollars market. Yet many consumers consider that the price charged by the cellular network operators is too high. In this paper, we explain that there exist alternatives to cellular networks for the provision of SMS. In particular, we present the Self-Organizing Wireless messaging nEtwoRk (SOWER), an all-wireless network operable in cities. In SOWER, each user installs a wireless, power-plugged device

Wireless sensor networks are already deployed in numerous occasions. As this technology matures towards wider adoption, security will become an increasingly important requirement. However, resource and cost constraints for the low-complexity sensor nodes remain a challenge in designing security mechanisms. In this paper, we propose a new approach to protect confidentiality against a parasitic adversary, interested in obtaining the sensor network measurements in an unauthorized way. Our low-complexity soluti

According to many scientists and clinicians, genomics is taking on a key role in the field of medicine. Impressive advances in genome sequencing have opened the way to a variety of revolutionary applications in modern healthcare. In particular, the increasing understanding of the human genome, and of its relation to diseases and response to treatments brings promise of improvements in better preventive and personalized medicine. However, this progress raises important privacy and ethical concerns that need

Location check-ins contain both geographical and semantic information about the visited venues, in the form of tags (e.g., “restaurant”). Such data might reveal some personal information about users beyond what they actually want to disclose, hence their p ...

The 15th event of the Research Data Lunch Talks entitled “Open Data and Open Source: Ensuring Longevity Beyond the Project”, took place on February 13th, 2025. Open to everyone interested, to connect with experts from the EPFL community, and discover how researchers across fields tackle the management of big datasets. Started with the EPFL RDM Team presenting an overview of Research Data Management initiatives at EPFL and beyond, followed by short talks and a panel for Q&A, from: “Privacy-preserving fede
