A stable clock indication is needed for the processing and playout of MPEG-2 streams. ATM networks can support the transfer of such streams but contribute significantly (as well as other system operations) to delay and delay variation. The MPEG-2 standard specifies strong temporal constraints for processing and presentation. MPEG-2 is also based on the assumption of a common time base shared among sender and receiver. Clock synchronization covers this requirement and is traditionally performed using PLLs. U

Ad hoc networks are expected to be used in a number of very different situations. But a common characteristic is that the nodes have to cooperate with each other. This problem is particularly crucial, if each node is its own authority. Reckoning the relevance of this issue, several groups of researchers have proposed different incentive mechanisms, in order to foster cooperation between the nodes, notably for packet forwarding. However, the need for these incentives was not formally justified. In this paper

Being able to share large amounts of sensitive clinical and genomic data across several institutions is crucial for precision medicine to scale up. Unfor- tunately, existing solutions only partially address this challenge and are still unable to provide th ...

In mobile networks, authentication is a required primitive for most security protocols. Unfortunately, an adversary can monitor pseudonyms used for authentication to track the location of mobile nodes. A frequently proposed solution to protect location pri ...

Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) enable communication among vehicles as well as between vehicles and roadside infrastructures. Currently available software tools for VANET research still lack the ability to asses the usability of vehicular applications. ...

Popular services such as Doodle Mobile and Tymelie are extremely useful planning tools that enable mobile-phone users to determine common meeting time(s) for events. Similar planning tools for determining optimal meeting locations, based on the location preferences of the users, are highly desirable for event planning and management in popular mobile phone applications, such as taxi sharing, route planning and mobile participatory sensing. Yet, they have received very little attention by researchers. An imp

MedCo is the first operational system that makes sensitive medical-data available for research in a simple, privacy-conscious and secure way. It enables a consortium of clinical sites to collectively protect their data and to securely share them with inves ...

We propose a straightforward technique to provide peer-to-peer security in mobile networks. We show that far from being a hurdle, mobility can be exploited to set up security associations among users. We leverage on the temporary vicinity of users, during which appropriate cryptographic protocols are run. We illustrate the operation of the solution in two scenarios, both in the framework of mobile ad hoc networks. In the first scenario, we consider fully self-organized security: users authenticate each othe

Online social networks increasingly allow mobile users to share their location with their friends. Much to the detriment of users’ privacy, this also means that social network operators collect users’ lo- cation. Similarly, third parties can learn users’ l ...

Vehicular communication (VC) systems are developed primarily to enhance transportation safety and efficiency. Vehicle-to-vehicle communication, in particular frequent cooperative awareness messages or safety beacons, have been considered over the past years as a main approach. Meanwhile, the need to provide security and safeguard the users privacy have been well understood, and security architectures for VC systems have been proposed. Although technical approaches to secure VC have several commonalities and

Current solutions for privacy-preserving data sharing among multiple parties either depend on a centralized authority that must be trusted and provides only weakest-link security (e.g., the entity that manages private/secret cryptographic keys), or leverag ...

We are primarily interested in formal techniques and how they are applied to the development of hybrid services in particular. We analyze the peculiarities of such services, we look at the use of formal techniques for communication services in the industry and highlight some of the major concerns for the application of formality in an industrial environment. It is argued that with the introduction of hybrid services, more pragmatism is required in applying formal techniques. We briefly describe an ongoing j

Co-location information about users is increasingly available online. For instance, mobile users more and more frequently report their co-locations with other users in the messages and in the pictures they post on social networking websites by tagging the ...

In this work, we address the security of VANETs. We provide a detailed threat analysis and devise an appropriate security architecture. We also describe some major design decisions still to be made, which in some cases have more than mere technical implications. We provide a set of security protocols, we show that they protect privacy and we analyze their robustness, and we carry out a quantitative assessment of the proposed solution.

Location-awareness is crucial to many applications of sensor networks. Existing location surveying approaches either rely on an inflexible infrastructure or suffer from high computation and communication load. In this paper, we present Non-intEractive lOcation Surveying (NEOS) to address certain deficiencies in the existing approaches. The key contribution of NEOS is twofold: (i) it employs a mobile beacon to introduce mobility-differentiated time-of-arrival (MDToA) observations, a special form of time diff

This paper presents a concrete and widespread example of situation where a user’s location privacy is unintentionally compromised by others, specifically the location-privacy threat that exists at access points (public hotspots, FON, home routers, etc.) th ...

We present RHODE, a novel system that enables privacy-preserving training of and prediction on Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) in a federated learning setting by relying on multiparty homomorphic encryption (MHE). RHODE preserves the confidentiality of the training data, the model, and the prediction data; and it mitigates the federated learning attacks that target the gradients under a passive-adversary threat model. We propose a novel packing scheme, multi-dimensional packing, for a better utilization of

We present and demo of Lattigo, a multiparty homomorphic encryption library in Go. After a brief introduction of the origin and history of the library, we dive into the most relevant technical aspects that differentiate Lattigo from other existing librarie ...

Still today, diagnosing a problem with multimedia resources, such as video and sound cards, is insufficiently automated. These resources therefore cannot be accurately managed. One reason for this is the lack of their thorough modeling. In this paper, we fulfill this need, by proposing a generic information model, which we further apply to an MPEG2 video codec. We highlight the main characteristics of this kind of codec, identify parameters that influence these characteristics, and reveal some of the trade-

Location-aware smartphones support various location-based services (LBSs): users query the LBS server and learn on the fly about their surroundings. However, such queries give away private information, enabling the LBS to track users. We address this probl ...
