Most popular location-based social networks, such as Facebook and Foursquare, let their (mobile) users post location and co-location (involving other users) information. Such posts bring social benefits to the users who post them but also to their friends ...

Many envisioned applications of ad hoc networks involve only small scale networks that we term Vicinity Ad-hoc Groups (VAGs). Distributed coordination services, instead of pairwise communications, are primary requirements of VAGs. Existing designs for distributed services in ad hoc networks apply either a layered structure or a vertical integration. While the former approach is efficient for protocol development, the latter improves runtime efficiency. In this paper, we argue that, since distributed service

Multi-hop hybrid networks can help providing both high bandwidth and broad coverage for wireless data networks. We focus on CSMA/CA-based networks and take IEEE 802.11 as a concrete example. We show that the three fundamental operations of synchronization, routing and energy saving can be implemented in an integrated way. Our integrated solution is based on the periodic computation of a broadcast tree among the nodes reporting to the same Access Point, starting from the Access Point itself. We use the nodes

Homomorphic encryption (HE), which allows computations on encrypted data, is an enabling technology for confidential cloud computing. One notable example is privacy-preserving Prediction-as-a-Service (PaaS), where machine-learning predictions are computed ...

Numerous proposals for applying temporal logic to the specification and verification of object-oriented systems have appeared in the past several years. Although various temporal models have been proposed for the requirements analysis of object-oriented distributed systems, there is no similar amount of work for the design- and implementation phase. We present a formal model for the design- and implementation stage which reflects practical requirements and is yet sufficiently general to be applied to a wide

Sharing data across multiple institutions for genome-wide association studies (GWAS) would enable discovery of novel genetic variants linked to health and disease. However, existing regulations on genomic data sharing and the sheer size of the data limit the scope of such collaborations. Although cryptographic tools for secure computation promise to enable collaborative studies with formal privacy guarantees, existing approaches either are computationally impractical or support only simplified analysis pipe

As a component of the intelligent transportation system (ITS) and one of the concrete applications of mobile ad hoc networks, inter-vehicle communication (IVC) has attracted research attention from both the academia and industry of, notably, US, EU, and Japan. The most important feature of IVC is its ability to extend the horizon of drivers and on-board devices (e.g., radar or sensors) and, thus, to improve road traffic safety and efficiency. This paper surveys IVC with respect to key enabling technologies

The Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) created the Beacon Project as a means of testing the willingness of data holders to share genetic data in the simplest technical context query for the presence of a specified nucleotide at a given positio ...

In this paper, we present a new rate control mechanism for delay sensitive MPEG-2 video services over ATM networks. The rate control constraints the video bitstream to respect the three negotiated VBR ATM traffic contract parameters modelled by a dual leaky bucket. We first develop several new mathematical relationships that permit to predict the bit rate on a frame-by-frame basis. Then a rate control algorithm, based on both a sustainable-rate control and an instantaneous-rate control, is derived. The cont

WiFi base stations are increasingly deployed in both public spaces and private companies, and the increase in their density poses a significant threat to the privacy of connected users. Prior studies have provided evidence that it is possible to infer the ...

Vehicular Networks (VNs) are emerging, among civilian applications, as a convincing instantiation of the mobile networking technology. However, security is a critical factor and a significant challenge to be met. Misbehaving or faulty network nodes have to ...

Direct-to-consumer genetic testing makes it possible for everyone to learn their genome sequences. In order to contribute to medical research, a growing number of people publish their genomic data on the Web, sometimes under their real identities. However, ...

So far, the problem of positioning in sensor and ad hoc networks has been studied in a non-adversarial setting. We show that most of the proposed positioning algorithms are highly vulnerable to attacks from compromised network nodes and malicious (outside) attackers. We propose a set of mechanisms for securing positioning. Our mechanisms aim to enable each node to obtain correct information about its position in the presence of attackers. Furthermore, they aim to enable the network nodes and the network aut

We propose and implement a multiparty homomorphic encryption (MHE) scheme with a t-out-of -N-threshold access-structure that is efficient and does not require a trusted dealer in the common random string model. We construct this scheme from the ring-learni ...

Over the last few years, the vast progress in genome sequencing has highly increased the availability of genomic data. Today, individuals can obtain their digital genomic sequences at reasonable prices from many online service providers. Individuals can st ...

In this paper, we propose privacy-enhancing technologies for personal use of the genomic data and analyze the tradeoff between genomic privacy and storage cost of the genomes. First, we highlight the potential privacy threats on the genomic data. Then, foc ...

Due to their limited capabilities, wireless sensor nodes are subject to physical attacks that are hard to defend against. In this paper, we first identify a typical attacker, called parasitic adversary, who seeks to exploit sensor networks by obtaining mea ...

In mobile networks, authentication is a required primitive of the majority of security protocols. However, an adversary can track the location of mobile nodes by monitoring pseudonyms used for authentication. A frequently proposed solution to protect locat ...

The mainstream approach to protecting the location-privacy of mobile users in location-based services (LBSs) is to alter the users' actual locations in order to reduce the location information exposed to the service provider. The location obfuscation algor ...

Genotype imputation is a fundamental step in genomic data analysis, where missing variant genotypes are predicted using the existing genotypes of nearby "tag"variants. Although researchers can outsource genotype imputation, privacy concerns may prohibit ge ...
