Impulse Radio Ultra-Wideband, in particular the recent standard IEEE 802.15.4a, is a primarycandidate for implementing distance bounding protocols, thanks to its ability to perform accurate indoor ranging. Distance bounding protocols allow two wireless devices to securely estimate the distance between themselves, with the guarantee that the estimate is an upper-bound on the actual distance. These protocols serve as building blocks in security-sensitive applications such as tracking, physical access control,

Progress in mobile wireless technology has resulted in the increased use of mobile devices to store and manage users' personal schedules. Users also access popular context-based services, typically provided by third-party providers, by using these devices ...

Mobile users increasingly make use of location-based online services enabled by localization systems. Not only do they share their locations to obtain contextual services in return (e.g., 'nearest restaurant'), but they also share, with their friends, info ...

Recent smartphones incorporate embedded GPS devices that enable users to obtain geographic information about their surroundings by providing a location-based service (LBS) with their current coordinates. However, LBS providers collect a significant amount ...

The longevity of wireless sensor networks is a major issue that impacts the application of such networks. While communication protocols are striving to save energy by acting on sensor nodes, recent results show that network lifetime can be prolonged by further involving sink mobility. As most proposals give their evidence of lifetime improvement through either (small-scale) field tests or numerical simulations on rather arbitrary cases, a theoretical understanding of the reason for this improvement and the

We present a simple, and yet powerful, technique for key establishment over a radio link in peer-to-peer networks. Our approach is based on the Diffie-Hellman key agreement protocol. This protocol is known to be vulnerable to the ``man-in-the-middle" attack if two users involved in the protocol share no authenticated information about each other (e.g., public keys) prior to the protocol execution. In this work, we show how the natural ability of users to authenticate each other by visual and verbal contact

Wireless social community networks are emerging as a new alternative to provide wireless data access in urban areas. By relying on users in the network deployment, a wireless community can rapidly deploy a high-quality data access infrastructure in an inex ...

In this paper, we introduce a navigation privacy attack, where an external adversary attempts to find a target user by exploiting publicly visible attributes of intermediate users. If such an attack is successful, it implies that a user cannot hide simply ...

NOVELTY - At least some of wireless terminals can communicate over wireless links (2) in one or several hops with at least some of the other wireless terminals. The distances (dij) to one-hop neighbors may be measured in a number of the wireless terminals (1), using the distances measured in at least two terminals (1) to compute the location (x,y) of at least one other wireless terminal. USE - For determining the relative position of wireless terminals in a network without using GPS. ADVANTAGE - Generates a

In all-wireless networks a crucial problem is to minimize energy consumption, as in most cases the nodes are battery-operated. We focus on the problem of power-optimal broadcast, for which it is well known that the broadcast nature of the radio transmission can be exploited to optimize energy consumption. Several authors have conjectured that the problem of power-optimal broadcast is NP-complete. We provide here a formal proof, both for the general case and for the geometric one; in the former case, the net

Inspired by unidirectional error detecting codes that are used in situations where only one kind of bit errors are possible (e.g., it is possible to change a bit “0” into a bit “1”, but not the contrary), we propose integrity codes (I-codes) for a radio co ...

The increasing number of mobile applications fuels the demand for affordable and ubiquitous wireless access. The traditional wireless network technologies such as EV-DO or WiMAX provide this service but require a huge upfront investment in infrastructure and spectrum. On the contrary, as they do not have to face such an investment, social community operators rely on subscribers who constitute a community of users. The pricing strategy of the provided wireless access is an open problem for this new generatio

Since the mid 1990s, network and systems management has steadily evolved from centralized paradigms, where the management application runs on a single management station, to distributed paradigms, where it is distributed over many nodes. In this survey, our goal is to classify all these paradigms, especially the new ones, in order to help network and systems administrators design a management application, and choose between mobile code, distributed objects, intelligent agents, etc. Step by step, we build an

We describe the on-going design and implementation of a sensor network for agricultural management targeted at resource-poor farmers in India. Our focus on semi-arid regions led us to concentrate on water-related issues. Throughout 2004, we carried outa su ...

In recent years, the Internet has proven its ability to carry real-time data, including voice. Today, a small amount of voice traffic has already been diverted from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) to the Internet. If it expands, this phenomenon can completely change the rules of the game for telecommunications. This paper presents an overview of the main technical problems to be addressed for the provision of interoperable services between IP Telephony and the PSTN. The pivotal element of the s

Contextual information about users is increasingly shared on mobile social networks. Examples of such information include users' locations, events, activities, and the co-presence of others in proximity. When disclosing personal information, users take int ...

Wireless networks offer novel means to enhance social interactions. In particular, peer-to-peer wireless communications enable direct and real-time interaction with nearby devices and communities and could extend current online social networks by providing ...
