TaSe3 belongs to a class of low-dimensional materials characterized by the interplay and competition between dimensionality crossover and broken symmetry ground states. A comprehensive study by dc-transport, optical, and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments shows that the electronic properties of this compound are strongly anisotropic between the chain and the transverse crystallographic direction. Even though TaSe3 fails to undergo a charge-density-wave (CDW) phase transition, we found evidence

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) displays quasi-one dimensional (1D) electronic states in the insulating molybdenum red bronze K0.33MoO3, in good qualitative agreement with band structure calculations. Combined ARPES, optical conductivity, and electrical resistivity data underline the importance of defects which pin the Fermi level within the gap. The ARPES line shape exhibits the same strong-coupling features observed in the blue bronze K0.3MoO3, a related 1D Peierls conductor. We specu

A chemically synthesized graphitic material where the structural coherence between the layers is missing approximates very well the assembly of graphene sheets. Our multi-frequency (9.4-420 GHz) electron spin resonance (ESR) study clearly identifies itiner ...

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are commonly classified as quasi-two-dimensional materials, meaning that their electronic structure closely resembles that of an individual layer, which results in resistivity anisotropies reaching thousands. ...

We present a combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and resistivity study of the model Fermi liquid system 1T-TiTe2. From the analysis of the quasiparticle spectral line shape we identify and separately evaluate the electron-electron. electron-phonon, and impurity scattering contributions to the quasiparticle lifetime. There is a clear correspondence between spectroscopic and transport data. A residual low-temperature spectral linewidth (Gamma (o)=17 meV) indicates that the three-dimensional nat

Using angle-resolved photoemission, we report the first observation of an incomplete charge-density-wave (CDW) gap opening for the quasi-two-dimensional material Mo4O11. Our data indicate that the gap opening occurs over a range of 0.5 (A)ngstrom(-1) in the Brillouin zone. The maximum gap opening (Delta(max)) we observe is 60 +/- 10 meV, which leads to a ratio of 2 Delta(max)/kT(CDW) = 14 +/- 6 (T-CDW = transition temperature), well above the weak coupling value of 3.5. Our data suggest that both 1-dimensio

We report transport measurements on single crystals of Sr2RuO4-δ, grown by the flux technique. The temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient is similar to the one measured in cuprates, and the linear resistivity persists up to ~1000 K, while the superconductivity remains confined below 1 K. This suggests that the linear temperature dependence of resistivity is not an exclusive signature of the anomalous normal state of high-Tc cuprates but rather of layered oxides in general, especially single-layer pe

Surface science and molecular biology are often concerned with systems governed by fluid dynamics at the nanoscale, where different physical behaviour is expected. With advances in nanofabrication techniques, the study of fluid dynamics around a nano-objec ...

X-ray photon detection is important for a wide range of applications. The highest demand, however, comes from medical imaging, which requires cost-effective, high-resolution detectors operating at low-photon flux, therefore stimulating the search for novel ...

Most digital information today is encoded in the magnetization of ferromagnetic domains. The demand for ever-increasing storage space fuels continuous research for energy-efficient manipulation of magnetism at smaller and smaller length scales. Writing a b ...

The thermal coarsening of titanate nanowires was investigated from room temperature to 1000 degrees C by AFM, SEM, XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Phase transformation kinetics and the external morphology were studied in two configurations: i) as individual an ...

The novel iridate Ba8Al2IrO14 was prepared as single crystals by self-flux method, thereby providing a rare example of an all-Ir(VI) compound that can be synthesized under ambient pressure conditions. The preparation of all-Ir6+ iridate without using tradi ...

Scientific conference paper We report thermopower and electrical resistance measurements of the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca1-xPrxCu2O8+delta (0 < x < 1) in a wide temperature range from 600 K to superconducting transition temperature (critical temperature, T-c). The transition temperature decreases with increasing x. Resistance obeys usual metallic linearity at higher temperatures, whereas at lower temperatures, before T-c (T similar to 300 K), a deviation from the linear trend is observed. The

We report electrical conductivity measurements of polymethyl-methacrylate filled by onion-like carbon particles with a primary particle size of approximate to 5 nm. We show that the conductivity sigma is exceptionally high even at very low loadings and tha ...

Superconductivity in van der Waals materials, such as NbSe2 and TaS2, is fundamentally novel due to the effects of dimensionality, crystal symmetries, and strong spin-orbit coupling. In this work, we perform tunnel spectroscopy on NbSe2 by utilizing MoS2 o ...

We find that even very low Ni doping levels of high-quality Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8 single crystals strongly affect the transition temperature T(c). We also observed that T(c) is not related to the total Ni concentration, but only to that of Ni engaged in NiO-type bonds. By controlling the temperature during crystal growth, one can modify the relative weight of Ni in NiO-type bonds with respect to other configurations-and therefore T(c).

We present a multifrequency electron spin resonance study in the range of 4-420 GHz of the quasi-one-dimensional, nondimerized, quarter-filled Mott insulators, delta-(EDT-TTF-CONMe2)(2)X (X=AsF6, Br). In the high-temperature orthorhombic phase above T simi ...

Coordination assemblies formed by metal(II) dithiocarbamates M-II(R(2)dtc)2 (M = Zn, Cd, Hg, Mn, and Fe; R = Me, Et, iPr, nPr, and nBu) and nitrogen-containing ligands (L = DABCO, DMP, and HMTA) are shown to be sterically well consistent with the spherical ...

Central to the biological function of microtubules. is their ability to modify their length which occurs by addition and removal of subunits at the ends of the polymer, both in vivo and in vitro. This dynamic behavior is strongly influenced by temperature. ...

We have extended the range of the high-pressure optical spectroscopy to the far-infrared region keeping the accuracy of ambient-pressure experiments. The developed method offers a powerful tool for the study of pressure-induced phase transitions and electr ...
