When a Mott metal-insulator transition is inhibited by a small amount of disorder in the layered dichalcogenide 1T-TaS2, an inhomogeneous superconducting state arises below T=2.1 K and coexists with a nearly commensurate charge-density wave. By angle-resol ...

The long term stability and the redox interaction between single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and photosynthetic reaction center proteins (RCs) purified from purple bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides R-26 in the SWNT/RC complex has been investigated. The ...

We have determined the mechanical anisotropy of a single microtubule by simultaneously measuring the Young's and the shear moduli in vitro. This was achieved by elastically deforming the microtubule deposited on a substrate tailored by electron-beam lithography with a tip of an atomic force microscope. The shear modulus is 2 orders of magnitude lower than the Young's, giving rise to a length-dependent flexural rigidity of microtubules. The temperature dependence of the microtubule's bending stiffness in the

Intermediate filaments (IFs), together with actin filaments and microtubules, compose the cytoskeleton. Among other functions, Ts impart mechanical stability to cells when exposed to mechanical stress and act as a support when the other cytoskeletal filaments cannot keep the structural integrity of the cells. Here we present a study on the bending properties of single vimentin Ts in which we used an atomic force microscopy (AFM) tip to elastically deform single filaments hanging over a porous membrane. We o

Disorder has a strong influence on the spectral properties of the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x high-T-c superconductor, both in the normal and in the superconducting state. High-resolution photoemission reveals a progressive quasiparticle suppression with increasing disorder in electron-irradiated optimally doped single crystals. The spectral Line shapes of the disordered samples show striking analogies with those of underdoped samples specifically the widely discussed pseudogap at the chemical potential. Disorder provi

The search for the coexistence between superconductivity and other collective electronic states in many instances promoted the discovery of novel states of matter. The manner in which the different types of electronic order combine remains an ongoing puzzl ...

In this article, we report on the mass production of carbon nanotubes using a continuous production system based on a rotary tube furnace. At first, we have optimized the composition of the metallic nanoparticles. Bimetallic Fe2Ni and Fe2Co alloys exhibit higher catalytic activity than pure Fe, Co or Ni. Then, catalyst production process has been modified for the preparation of large quantity of catalyst with low aggregation suitable for large scale synthesis of CNTs. A production rate of about 1.2 kg per d

High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on the quasi-one-dimensional Peierls system K0.3MoO3 reveals a "hidden" open Fermi surface and band features displaying the symmetry properties of the underlying lattice. However, the ARPES line shapes and optical data suggest that the corresponding quasiparticles are heavily renormalized by strong electron-phonon interactions. The temperature dependence of the leading edge of the mostly incoherent spectrum bears signatures of the Peierls tra

In the Ca1-xLaxFeAs2 (1 1 2) family of pnictide superconductors, we have investigated a highly overdoped composition (x = 0.56), prepared by a high-pressure, high-temperature synthesis. Magnetic measurements show an antiferromagnetic transition at T-N = 12 ...

The temperature dependence of the electron-spin relaxation time in MgB2 is anomalous as it does not follow the resistivity above 150 K; it has a maximum around 400 K and decreases for higher temperatures. This violates the well established Elliot-Yafet the ...

We report crystal growth at high pressure, structure determination, and magnetic and transport studies of an oxypnictide superconductor Pr4Fe2As2Te1-xO4. Its structure resembles the known 1111 phase except for the considerably larger c lattice constant and ...

Thin film gas sensors made of nanocomposite MWCNT center dot SnO2(1:66), semiconductor compound WO3 center dot SnO2(1:9), and also multicomponent structure MWCNT center dot SnO2(1:66)/WO3 center dot SnO2(1:9) have been fabricated by high-frequency magnetro ...

Uniformly dispersed deposition of various nanoparticles (gold and silver of 20?50 nm) and nanowires (ZnO and VOx) on different surfaces (Si, GaAs, mica, and steel) was obtained by boiling colloid drops on preheated substrates. Our results suggest a deposit ...

We present an electron spin resonance (ESR) study at excitation frequencies of 9.4 and 222.4 GHz of powders and single crystals of a Prussian blue analog (PBA), RbMn[Fe(CN)(6)]center dot H2O in which Fe and Mn undergoes a charge-transfer transition between ...

Thermal position fluctuations of a colloidal particle in an optical trap are measured with microsecond resolution using back-focal-plane interferometry. The mean-square displacement MSD(t) and power spectral density are in excellent agreement with the theo ...

Graphene is theoretically expected to be a highly suitable material for spintronic and quantum computation applications. Current experimental reports assign surprisingly low spin lifetimes to graphene and related carbon structures. Recently, we showed a so ...

An environmentally friendly analog of the prominent methylammonium lead halide perovskite, methylammonium bismuth bromide (MA3Bi2Br9), was prepared and investigated in the form of powder, single crystals and nanowires. Complete characterization via synchro ...

Coherent light sources emitting in the terahertz range are highly sought after for fundamental research and applications. Terahertz lasers rely on achieving population inversion. We demonstrate the generation of terahertz radiation using nitrogen-vacancy c ...

We have attempted to prepare graphene samples by mechanical exfoliation of HOPG (highly oriented pyrolytic graphite) using scotch tape. Random testing of the flakes by AFM has shown in majority single layer graphene. Nevertheless, the presence of ultrathin ...

We introduce a method for the acquisition of single molecule force measurements of ligand-receptor interactions using the photonic force microscope (PFM). Biotin-functionalized beads, manipulated with an optical trap, and a streptavidin-functionalized coverslip were used to measure the effect of different pulling forces on the lifetime of individual streptavidin-biotin complexes. By optimizing the design of the optical trap and selection of the appropriate bead size, pulling forces in excess of 50 pN were a
