Microcavity exciton polaritons, the fundamental optical excitations of semiconductor microcavities with quantum wells inside, have been proposed as promising candidates for observing stimulated scattering, condensation and other phenomena related to the bosonic nature of excitons. Having a light mass, quantum degeneracy of polaritons can be reached at low densities and high temperatures. But the radiative time of polaritons is very short (in the picosecond range) and usually prevents an efficient thermaliza

We present a combined low-temperature time-resolved cathodoluminescence and photoluminescence study of exciton recombination mechanisms in a 3.8 nm thick a-plane (Al,Ga)N/GaN quantum well (QW). We observe the luminescence from QW excitons and from excitons ...

Both weakly and strongly confined excitons are studied by time-resolved photoluminescence in a nonpolar nitride-based heterostructure grown by molecular beam epitaxy on the a-facet of a bulk GaN crystal, with an ultralow dislocation density of 2 × 105 cm-2 ...

In this review, we present a comprehensive set of experimental results on microcavity-polariton Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC), obtained within a close collaboration between Institut Neel, Grenoble, France and EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland. First, we recal ...

From cosmology to the microscopic scales of the quantum world, the study of topological excitations is essential for the understanding of phase conformation and phase transitions. Quantum fluids are convenient systems to investigate topological entities be ...

Time-resolved fluorescence spectra for C60 mols. embedded in Ne and Ar matrixes and C70 in Ne matrixes were recorded using a synchroscan streak camera. In the case of C60, the decay times of the S1 state are identical for all fluorescence bands confirming that it is a state of mixed T1g, T2g, and Gg characters. Its lifetime is detd. by the intersystem crossing rate to the triplet manifold which increases in going from Ar to Ne matrixes. This is attributed to a change of the dominant symmetry character of S1

Non-linear interactions in coherent gases are not only at the origin of bright and dark solitons and superfluids; they also give rise to phenomena such as multistability, which hold great promise for the development of advanced photonic and spintronic devi ...

Modifying the photonic environment of a semiconductor quantum well by embedding it in a high-reflectivity microcavity gives rise to new fundamental optical excitations, half-quantum well excitons, half-photons. These particles, called polaritons, have a light mass, as cavity photons, meaning that they have a large De Broglie wavelength. On the other hand, polaritons, like excitons, are subject to Coulomb interaction, a feature generating strong optical nonlinearities. Such properties favour quantum degenera

We demonstrate three-dimensional spatial confinement of exciton-polaritons in a semiconductor microcavity. Polaritons are confined within a micron-sized region of slightly larger cavity thickness, called mesa, through lateral trapping of their photon compo ...

We have directly measured the carrier temperature in semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) via spontaneous emission and we demonstrate an unexpectedly high carrier temperature. The direct correlation of the temperature increase with the carrier density suggests Auger recombination as the main heating mechanism. We have developed a model based on rate equations for the total energy density of electrons, holes, and longitudinal-optical phonons. This model allows us to explain the thermal behavior of carrier

V groove GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wires are investigated by spatially resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy using a low-temperature scanning near- field optical microscope. The spectra along the wires feature several sharp emission lines, which are understood as the emission from exciton states localized in inhomogeneities of the confining potential. It is expected that these exciton states spatially overlap and that their energies are correlated, which leads to level repulsion. The statistical analysis of the

In this work, we study the influence of the excitation conditions on power-dependent spin switching and spin multistability of exciton polaritons in planar semiconductor microcavities. We obtain experimental evidence for the influence of a reservoir of non ...

Quantized vortices appear in quantum gases at the breakdown of superfluidity. In liquid helium and cold atomic gases, they have been indentified as the quantum counterpart of turbulence in classical fluids. In the solid state, composite light-matter bosons known as exciton polaritons have enabled studies of non-equilibrium quantum gases and superfluidity. However, there has been no experimental evidence of hydrodynamic nucleation of polariton vortices so far. Here we report the experimental study of a polar

The time-resolved secondary emission of resonantly created excitons in GaAs quantum wells is studied using femtosecond up-conversion spectroscopy. The behaviour of the rise and decay of the secondary emission and reflectivity in quantum welts is strongly dependent upon the disorder at the interfaces, the exciton density and the temperature. In the case of low densities and temperatures the emission is independent of the exciton density and rises quadratically in time, in excellent agreement with recent theo

In this study, we present the optical properties of nonpolar GaN/(Al,Ga)N single quantum wells (QWs) grown on either a- or m-plane GaN templates for Al contents set below 15%. In order to reduce the density of extended defects, the templates have been proc ...

Photoluminescence of p-type modulation doped (Cd,Mn)Te quantum wells is studied with carrier density up to 5 X 10(11) cm(-2) at various spin splittings. This splitting can be made larger than the characteristic energies of the system thanks to the giant Zeeman effect. At small spin splitting and regardless of the carrier density, the photoluminescence exhibits a single line, which corresponds to the charged exciton in the singlet state. Above a certain spin splitting, the charged exciton is destabilized in

We study the influence of local inhomogeneities on carrier recombination dynamics in single InGaN/GaN core-shell microrods (MRs) by means of time-resolved microphotoluminescence (TRPL) at 10 K. At low carrier density (similar to 10(11) cm(-2)), the carrier ...

Polaritons have often been proposed as promising candidates for the realization of all-optical devices due to the easy manipulation and control of their density and spin. In this paper we present a relaxation mechanism for confined polaritons and its appli ...

We demonstrate that the interaction between excitons and a sea of incoherent electrons does not preclude excitons dressing by light. We investigate if exciton-electron scattering plays some inhibiting role in the coherent light-exciton coupling by measurin ...
