Recent progress made in our lab. in the field of electrochem. promotion of heterogeneous catalytic gas reactions is reviewed. The phenomenon consists of electrochem. polarization of the catalyst/solid electrolyte interface resulting in a dramatic, non-Faradaic modification of the catalytic reaction rate. Two main aspects have been addressed, the mechanistic interpretation of the phenomenon and the development of bipolar cell configurations suitable for practical applications. Fundamental studies were made u

Electrochemical promotion (EP) of CO oxidation is shown for the first time on induced bipolar Pt particles supported on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). These Pt particles are formed by sputter deposition of high-purity Pt metal followed by sintering. Con ...

Electrochem. treatment of soils to 2 clays, kaolinite and montmorillonite, polluted with Cu was studied. Montmorillonite has higher exchange properties than kaolinite, conducting to stronger interaction between this clay and Cu. Electromigration of Cu takes place from the anode towards the cathodic compartment where the Cu is collected. Soil nature and its exchange capacity is detg. the extn. rate of Cu. Extn. is quicker on kaolinite than on montmorillonite. For both soils, final extn. rate were >85% of the

A new experimental set-up, coupling electrochemistry and mass spectroscopic techniques, for the investigation of a solid electrochemical cell under high vacuum conditions (HV) is presented. Two configurations are realized allowing the investigation of both ...

The electrochemical oxidation of ammonia was investigated on a Ni/Ni(OH)(2) electrode prepared by potential cycling of a Ni electrode in 1 M NaClO4. It was found that oxidation of ammonia is strongly pH dependent and proceeds mainly at pH values above 7. T ...

The increasing quality and durability of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) state-of-the-art materials renders the long-term testing of fuel cells difficult since considerably long equipment times are needed to obtain valuable results. Moreover, reproducibilit ...

Recent studies have shown that electrolysis can be an efficient process for nitrogen removal from urine. These studies have been conducted with urea solutions or fresh urine, but urine collected in NoMix toilets and urinals has a substantially different co ...

The influence of the boron doping level in boron doped diamond electrodes (BDD) on the electro-generation of active intermediates (hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide) involved in the oxidation of organic compounds has been studied. It is shown that th ...

Ethylene oxidn. on IrO2, which is a metal-type conducting metal oxide, and on Pt and Rh was used as a model reaction to compare the rate enhancement and kinetic modification induced by (i) electrochem. promotion (non-Faradaic electrochem. modification of catalytic activity effect) via electrochem. O2- supply from YSZ (Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2) and TiO2 and by (ii) metal-support interactions obtained by interfacing IrO2 with TiO2 (with and without electrochem. promotion) or by depositing dispersed Rh on TiO2 and

Pure Magneli Ti4O7 nanotube arrays (NTA) were successfully fabricated by reducing TiO2 NTA with hydrogen at 850 degrees C for 30 minutes. The microstructure, composition and electrochemical behavior of the prepared Ti4O7 NTA were characterized by means of ...

The boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode is presented as an appropriate candidate for next generation glass-free, highly stable and accurate pH sensors. The method used in this study is based on the potential change related to the hydrogen evolution reactio ...

The electrochem. promoted induction of self-sustained catalytic rate and potential oscillations during C2H4 oxidn. was studied over sputtered Rh thin (40 nm catalyst films interfaced with ZrO2 (8 mol% Y2O3)). The reaction rate oscillates simultaneously wit ...

Boron-doped diamond electrodes, both as-grown and polarized anodically under different conditions, were prepd. in order to study the chem. and electrochem. changes of diamond and clarify the role played by the surface-state d. Many different treatments were employed: as-grown (BDDag), mildly polarized (BDDmild), strongly polarized in perchloric acid (BDDsevere), and strongly polarized in a sulfuric acid-acetic acid mixt. (BDDAcOH). Charge transfer processes at the electrode surface were studied by cyclic vo

Etched Al of uniform quality is obtained at a const. rate by pptg. Al(OH)3 from the bath with simultaneous regeneration of the NaOH or KOH. The pptn. is promoted by addn. of Na2CO3. Filterability of the ppt. is improved by the addn. of complexing agents, e.g. Na gluconate. Thus, water 12 m3 at 40-60 Deg, Na2CO3 1000, NaOH 280, and Na gluconate [527-07-1] 6 kg were placed into container, dild. to 20 m3, mixed, and heated to .apprx.70 Deg. Hot etching was done at 70-75 Deg, pH 11.7 +- 0.1, and 6.5 +- 0.5 g Al

Potential losses and kinetic parameters in anodic biofilms of microbial fuel cell are determined with a theoretical model based on experimental data using Shewanella oneidensis. A phenomenological relation was applied to understand potential losses and kinetics at the anode's bio-interphase. This function was used to model theoretical current-potential curves (Nernstian j-E curves) for mediated electron transfer (MET) and direct electron transfer (DET) between 5 and 40 °C. The numerically determined potenti

The redn. of NO by CO or C3H6 in the presence of O2, a reaction of great technol. importance, was studied on porous polycryst. Rh catalyst films using a single-chamber and a wireless bipolar cell configuration. In the latter case the Rh catalyst films were deposited on the inner side of a YSZ tube, while 2 Au films deposited on the outer side of the tubes were used to polarize the Rh catalyst surface. The exptl. conditions used in this study were close to those in the exhaust of a lean burn or diesel engine

Application of a direct elec. field in contaminated soils is expected to produce an important in situ means of environmental restoration. The factors that det. the success of the process are the combined effects of electroosmosis, ionic migration, electrochem. and chem. reactions. During extn. of copper, the pH of the purging soln. had significant influence on process efficiency. Extn. of 94-99 % of the initial copper present in kaolinite clay, under controlled acidic pH, has been achieved. During extn. of

The phenomenon of electrochemical promotion of catalysis (EPOC) is most often fully reversible. Subsequent to long-lasting polarization, however, the new steady-state open-circuit catalytic activity after current interruption may remain significantly highe ...
