The case presented in the paper shows how effective measurements can be made to help in the assessment of an important structure in a relatively short time frame using a combination of electronic inclinometers, temperature sensors and hydrostatic leveling. While not directly applicable to all kinds of structures, the methodology presented can certainly be adapted to many situations. It is anticipated that this and similar methods will be developed that will deliver a high quality of information about struct

To improve the reduced available experimental data on the load capacity of full scale bridge deck slabs, 3 tests on a large scale bridge cantilever (10 x 4.2 m) were done. The cantilevers were tested under 4, 2 and 1 concentrated loads simulating traffic w ...

Daily and seasonal temperature variations induce deflections of bridges. The amplitude of these moments is significant in comparison with the yearly increment caused by irreversible long-term deflections. To improve the quality of the interpretation of mon ...

The paper presents results from an experimental and analytical study of interior columns subjected to punching in the presence of an unbalanced moment. The moment, characterized in the study by an eccentricity of the load in the column, is shown to have a significant effect in decreasing the punching strength. Punching shear reinforcement, while improving both the ultimate load and the deformability of the slab, is exhibiting a similar behavior with regard to the interaction of punching and unbalanced momen

The influence of plastic strains in the longitudinal reinforcement in presence of high shear forces in beams and slabs without stirrups was investigated performing a series of tests of eight ordinary reinforced concrete beams 8.4 meters long with 0.79% rei ...

The present paper describes the challenges posed by transposing a successful conventional course into an – hopefully – equally successful web-based course, with the name i-Structures. This work is under way as part of the Swiss Virtual Campus project. The i-Structures project team is composed of members from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, the Swiss Italian University in Mendrisio and Lugano, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich and the University of Applied Sciences in

The stress field method is a technique based on the lower-bound theorem of plasticity that can be used for dimensioning, detailing and checking of structural concrete elements. Its use has been traditionally associated with the assumption of simplified (ri ...

The results of a test series on the punching behavior of slabs with varying flexural reinforcement ratios and without transverse reinforcement are presented. The aim of the tests was to investigate the behavior of slabs failing in punching shear with low r ...

The paper presents a new method for the automatic monitoring of bridges deformations. Based on the use of electronic high precision inclinometers, this method permits to accurately reconstruct the deflected shape of the bridge and to follow its long-term evolution. A practical and efficient method for the reconstruction of the deflected shape from measured rotations is proposed. The example of an actual bridge in Western Switzerland, in which the system is operational, is described. The results obtained cor

A series of 16 specimens of concrete web panels 23.6 x 23.6 x 4.9 in. (600 x 600 x 125 mm) was tested in compression to investigate the effect of the presence of various types of post-tensioning ducts on the strength of the shear-induced compression struts ...

The paper presents an analytical comparison of the amount of prestressing required for two similar bridges, one with internal and the other with external prestressing. This comparison shows that bridges with external prestressing can become economically competitive for large girder depths. The detrimental effect of the smaller stress in the prestressing steel at the ultimate limit state is more than compensated by the thinner webs made possible by the absence of the ducts.

The paper presents an innovative method of measurement of long-term deformations of bridges. The use of high precision electronic inclinometers permits an efficient and cost-effective automatic monitoring of bridge deformations. The system is easily applicable to structures subjected to intense traffic loads and is able to follow accurately the movements of the bridge during daily and seasonal temperature variations. The system has been in operation in the Riddes viaduct in Western Switzerland for over a ye

The paper presents the findings of the monitoring of the long-term deflections of three bridges which were retrofitted with external post-tensioning. The emphasis is on the effect of the additional post-tensioning on the bridge behaviour in the years following the retrofit. The bridges are highway prestressed concrete box-girder bridges built by the balanced cantilever method and retrofitted with additional exterior post-tensioning cables for deflection control. It is shown that external posttensioning can

Over the past decades, an increasing number of bridges with integral abutment have been built in Switzerland. This type of bridge offers various advantages over standard bridges with abutments, equipped with expansion joints and bearings that require regul ...

The enhanced concrete tie model described in this paper can be used to determine the flexural behavior of RC and PC sections. This model is applicable to any concrete section, without shape restriction and will be implemented in a shell FE package. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, a simple program has been developed, using a discretization of the cross section in slices.

This paper presents the results of an experimental test series on the soil-structure-pavement interaction in the vicinity of the transition slab at the end of an integral bridge. The main function of transition slabs is to ease the transition between the b ...

The paper proposes design criteria for the choice of the amount of prestressing. Based on an extension of the well known load balancing method, the proposed criteria permit a simple and effective design of the amount of prestressing at serviceability. The paper also discusses the favourable effect of compressive stresses induced by prestressing on cracking and water-tightness of PC structures. In situ measurements as well as extensive test results demonstrate that the proposed criteria lead to structures th

A comparative study was conducted to highlight key differences in the required amounts of prestressing and passive reinforcement for externally and internally prestressed box-girder bridges. The reinforcement is designed on the basis of combined serviceability and structural safety criteria for varying span length and girder slenderness. Under the assumptions of the study, the externally prestressed box-girder is shown to require up to 25 % more prestressing force for girder heights around 2 m. At girder he
