The economic environment in the specialty chemicals industry requires short times to market and thus the ability to develop new products and processes very rapidly. This, in turn, calls for large scale-ups from laboratory to production. Due to scale-relate ...

An important requirement of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is compliance with the local regulations on effluent discharge, which are going to become more stringent in the future. The operation of WWTPs exhibits a trade-off between operational cost and ...

Correct prediction of analyte concentrations from a new spectrum without drift is possible provided the spectrum lies in the row space spanned by the calibration spectra (space-inclusion condition). However, this condition may be violated as on-line spectr ...

Optimal Operation of Batch Processes with Multiple Inputs and Constraints B. Srinivasan, S. Palanki, and D. Bonvin Optimal operation of batch processes has become increasingly important in recent years in the face of increased competition and also due to the trend towards building small, flexible plants n e a r the markets of consumption. Traditionally, batch processes have been operated with rudimentary control loops, which hinders the implementation of best operating policies in t h e face of uncertainty.

The real-time optimization scheme “modifier adaptation” (MA) has been developed to enforce steady-state plant optimality in the presence of model uncertainty. The key feature of MA is its ability to locally modify the model by adding bias and gradient corr ...

For good performance in practice, real-time optimization schemes need to be able to deal with the inevitable plant-model mismatch problem. Unlike the two-step schemes combining parameter estimation and optimization, the modifier-adaptation approach does no ...

This paper describes a two-sweep control design method to stabilize the acrobot, an input-affine under-actuated system, at the upper equilibrium point. In the forward sweep, the system is successively reduced, one dimension at a time, until a two-dimensiona ...

This paper considers the minimization of batch time for an industrial inverse-emulsion polymerization reactor in the presence of uncertainty. A first optimization study resulted in the current industrial practice of a semi-adiabatic profile (isothermal operation followed by an adiabatic one), where the switching time between the two modes of operation is updated to meet the terminal constraint on reactor temperature, as well as a constraint on residual raw material levels. However, such a procedure requires

It is well known that the prediction errors from principal component regression (PCR) and partial least-squares regression (PLSR) can be reduced by using both labeled and unlabeled data for stabilizing the latent subspaces in the calibration step. An appro ...

Iterative tuning of the parameters of a restricted-order controller using the data acquired in closed-loop operation seems to be a promising idea, especially for tuning PID controllers in industrial applications. In this paper, a new tuning approach based on decorrelation is proposed. The basic idea is to make the output error between the designed and achieved closed-loop systems uncorrelated with the reference signal. The controller parameters are calculated as the solution to correlation equations involvi

A powerful approach for dynamic optimization in the presence of uncertainty is to incorporate measurements into the optimization framework so as to track the optimum. For nonsingular control problems, this can be done by tracking active constraints along b ...

Industrial filamentous fungal fermentations are typically operated in fed- batch mode. Oxygen control represents an important operational challenge due to the varying biomass concentration. In this study, oxygen control is implemented by manipulating the s ...

This paper examines the identification of a single-output two-input system. Motivated by an experiment design problem(should one excite the two inputs simultaneously or separately), we examine the effect of the (second) input signal on the variance of the ...

The operation of dynamic processes can be optimized using models that predict the system behavior well, in particular its optimality features. In practice, however, process models are often structurally inaccurate, and on-line adaptation is typically requi ...

On-line measurements from first-order instruments such as spectrometers may be compromised by instrumental, process and operational drifts that are not seen during off-line calibration. This can render the calibration model unsuitable for prediction of key ...

Various offset-free economic model predictive control schemes that include a disturbance model and the modifier-adaptation principle have been proposed in recent years. These schemes are able to reach plant optimality asymptotically even in the presence of ...

This article presents a kite control and optimization problem intended as a benchmark problem for advanced control and optimization. We provide an entry point to this exciting renewable energy system for researchers in control and optimization methods look ...

State estimation techniques are used for improving the quality of measured signals and for reconstructing unmeasured quantities. In chemical reaction systems, nonlinear estimators are often used to improve the quality of estimated concentrations. These non ...

For the optimization of dynamic systems, it is customary to use measurements to combat the effect of uncertainty. In this context, an approach that consists of tracking the necessary conditions of optimality is gaining in popularity. The approach relies st ...
