Visuo-motor integration shapes our daily experience and underpins the sense of feeling in control over our actions. The last decade has seen a surge in robotically and virtually mediated interactions, whereby bodily actions ultimately result in an artifici ...

In the operational theater, the surgical team could highly benefit from a robotic supplementary hand under the surgeon's full control. The surgeon may so become more autonomous; this may reduce communication errors with the assistants and take over difficult tasks such as holding tools without tremor. In this paper, we therefore examine the possibility to control a third robotic hand with one foot's movements. Three experiments in virtual reality were designed to assess the feasibility of this control strat

A method for the fabrication of metallic nanoparticles in large quantities by electrochemical discharges is presented. In an aqueous electrolyte, large current density (similar to 1 A/mm(2) at similar to 20 V) leads to the formation of a 'gas film' around ...

The choice of an adequate actuation method is a central issue in the development of any mechatronic device and strongly determines the dynamic performances of the system. This choice is particularly difficult for robotic systems working within a magnetic r ...

Interventional radiology is a minimally invasive procedure where thin instruments, guidewires and catheters or stents are steered through the patient’s vascular system under X- ray imaging for treatment of vascular diseases. The complexity of these procedu ...

Cy-mag3D is a miniature climbing robot with advanced mobility and magnetic adhesion. It is very compact: a cylindrical shape with 28 mm of diameter and 62 mm of width. Its design is very simple: two wheels, hence two degrees of freedom, and an advanced mag ...

We are interested in developing and building an experimental system for controlling a quadruped robot with a brain-derived signal of a rat. We recorded large ensembles of neurones in left M1 and right M1 and S1 using chronically implanted multi-electrodes ...

The purpose of evaluation procedures is to achieve both qualitative and quantitative statements on haptic rendering realism and performance. Since a haptic interface provides an interaction between a user and a virtual environment, fidelity of a haptic int ...

In this work, we introduce a newly developed passive and frictionless diamagnetic contactless suspension rotor with electrostatic glass motor. A 20 mm diameter disc-shaped rotor comprised of pyrolytic graphite with glass is fabricated. The rotor is diamagn ...

This work focuses on some promising applications of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based bimorph actuators in microengineering. The actuator of several centimeters in length and 100 mu m in thickness takes advantage of the structural and electromechanical ...

Under gas evolution, the current voltage characteristics of an electrochemical cell are strongly affected by the presence of growing bubbles. At high current densities, the evolution of the bubbles becomes the rate limiting step of the electrochemical proc ...

The growing complexity of telemanipulation tasks calls for increased realism and intuitiveness of the interaction between the user and the master control. Humans perceive multiple haptic features of an object such as its stiffness, temperature, and shape, ...

The Nine Hole Peg Test (NHPT) is routinely used in clinical environments to evaluate a patient’s fine hand control. A physician measures the total time required to insert nine pegs into nine holes and obtains information on the dexterity of the patient. Ev ...

Effective tool use relies on the integration of multisensory signals related to one's body and the tool. It has been shown that active tool use results in an extension of peripersonal space, i. e., the space directly surrounding the human body. In the pres ...

Eddy current techniques are often used to detect and, in some advanced applications, to characterize fatigue surface-breaking cracks appearing in mechanical parts. One of the major difficulties in this approach is to reliably separate the crack contributio ...

Knowledge of frictional forces acting on the tips of minimally invasive medical devices is important in the design and simulation of such devices. Moreover, several studies have shown that uncontrolled frictional forces can induce damage to organs. The goa ...

Inspection of the colon with an endoscope for early signs of cancer (colonoscopy) has become an extremely widespread procedure, since early treatment radically improves the outlook of patients. The procedure requires a close coordination between the sense ...

High-speed laser manipulation is a key technology in applications such as fast optical switches for coupling light into optical fibres, 2D beam steering for optical scanners, laser printers or 2D sensors. A novel design of a Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) bimorph actuator is proposed in this work as high speed switching element in the kHz range. The actuator of several cm length and 200 microns thickness takes advantage of the structural and electromechanical capabilities of the PVDF. A 0.164 g compact mirr

This paper presents a safe, electrically powered MR-compatible actuator with a large range of output impedance, which can be used at the entry of the scanner bore. This actuator is composed of an ultrasonic motor (USM) and a torque-controlled electrorheolo ...

This paper presents a case-study on the performance achieved by the mechanical interactions of self-assembling mobile robots. This study is based on the hand-bot robot, designed to operate within heterogeneous swarms of robots. The hand-bot is specialized ...
