Shoulder disorders, including rotator cuff tears, affect the shoulder function and result in adapted muscle activation. Although these adaptations have been studied in controlled conditions, free-living activities have not been investigated. Based on the k ...

Gait assessments in standardized settings, as part of the clinical follow-up of children with cerebral palsy (CP), may not represent gait in daily life. This study aimed at comparing gait characteristics in laboratory and real life settings on the basis of ...

Highlights What are the main findings? Clinical lower limb assessments (both subjective and objective) were more discriminative in differentiating between the four PFF recovery groups in older adults. Older adults in the acute proximal femoral fracture rec ...

This study aims to design a wearable system for kinetics measurement of multi-segment foot joints in long-distance walking and to investigate its suitability for clinical evaluations. The wearable system consisted of inertial sensors (3D gyroscopes and 3D ...

Background: Falls are a major cause of injuries in older adults. To evaluate the risk of falls in older adults, clinical assessments such as the 5-time sit-to-stand (5xSTS) test can be performed. The development of inertial measurement units (IMUs) has pro ...

Purpose: To explore whether triaxial accelerometric measurements can be utilized to accurately assess speed and incline of running in free-living conditions. Methods: Body accelerations during running were recorded at the lower back and at the heel by a portable data logger in 20 human subjects, 10 men, and 10 women. After parameterizing body accelerations, two neural networks were designed to recognize each running pattern and calculate speed and incline. Each subject ran 18 times on outdoor roads at vario

Long-term monitoring of real-life physical activity (PA) using wearable devices is increasingly used in clinical and epidemiological studies. The quality of the recorded data is an important issue, as unreliable data may negatively affect the outcome measu ...

Running mechanics are modifiable with training and adopting an economical running technique can improve running economy and hence performance. While field measurement of running economy is cumbersome, running mechanics can be assessed accurately and conven ...

Background and aim Parkinsonian disorders are hallmarked by gait and balance impairments. Atypical parkinsonian disorders (APD) develop postural instability with falls and gait disorders early on. Sensor-based gait recordings provide objective data in hospital and everyday life, improving mobility assessment accuracy. However, the impact of duration and distance of instrumented assessments on construct validity remains unclear. This exploratory study aims to evaluate the construct validity of gait assessmen

In order to distinguish dysfunctional gait; clinicians require a measure of reference gait parameters for each population. This study provided normative values for widely used parameters in more than 1400 able-bodied adults over the age of 65. We also meas ...

This study aimed to introduce and validate a new method to estimate and correct the orientation drift measured from foot-worn inertial sensors. A modified strap-down integration (MSDI) was proposed to decrease the orientation drift, which, in turn, was fur ...

Background All behaviour requires energy, and measuring energy expenditure in standard units (joules) is key to linking behaviour to ecological processes. Animal-borne accelerometers are commonly used to infer proxies of energy expenditure, termed 'dynamic ...

Three-dimensional (3D) knee angle measurement is one of the key measures in human gait analysis. Inertial sensor capable of measuring joint motion under unconstrained conditions is a practical tool for clinical evaluation and rehabilitation. An inertial me ...

Subject-specific modelling of Total Knee Arthroplasty could be an efficient method to preoperatively evaluate surgical options. In particular, the question of the necessity of patellar resurfacing is still a debatable issue. The aim of this work was to val ...

The present study investigates if inertial sensors could be used for reconstructing 3D full body movements in sports. On the example of alpine ski racing, it was demonstrated that inertial sensors allow computing meaningful parameters related to a skier’s ...

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is most commonly injured during sporting activities such as football, ski, handball etc., when an athlete suddenly pivots or places excessive rotational force on his knee. The ACL can also be torn during severe trauma such as a car accident or as the result of a work injury. Switzerland’s primary accident insurer reports more than 3500 ACL injuries per year. An ACL injury generates knee instability which increases the risk of disease in menisci and cartilage and affects

The objective of this feasibility study is to evaluate the use of the 'Physilog' device, an ambulatory physical- activity recorder based on acceleration measurement, for the monitoring of daily physical activities. Accelerations measured at the level of the chest and the thigh are recorded by Physilog over a period of 1 h in five normal subjects. A specially designed studio-like room allowing the performance of most usual activities of everyday life is used. A video film synchronised with the Physilog is ob

Stroke is the leading cause of disabilities in the western world and may cause severe motor impairments. In the current clinical practice, progress during physical rehabilitation is assessed by a therapist for specific motor functions and through questionn ...

To better understand how rehabilitation therapy of stroke survivors is transferred in patient’s daily life, activity monitors exist but require multiple wearable devices and may hinder patient’s movements. In this study, the use of a single wearable barometric pressure sensor, placed on the trunk, is investigated as a complementary sensor to inertial sensors for reliably identifying Sit-to-Stand and Stand-to-Sit transitions in daily-life, key components of balance control. The pressure was first converted i

A new method of physical activity monitoring is presented, which is able to detect body postures (sitting, standing, and lying) and periods of walking in elderly persons using only one kinematic sensor attached to the chest. The wavelet transform, in conjunction with a simple kinematics model, was used to detect different postural transitions (PTs) and walking periods during daily physical activity. To evaluate the system, three studies were performed. The method was first tested on 11 community-dwelling el
