Heterogeneous processing platforms combining in various architectures CPUs, GPUs, and programmable logic, are continuously evolving providing at each generation higher theoretical levels of computing performance. However, the challenge of how efficiently s ...

The Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) framework is a recent ISO standard aiming at providing a unified specification of MPEG video technology in the form of a library of components. The word “reconfigurable” evokes run-time instantiation of different decoders starting from an on-the-fly analysis of the input bitstream. In this paper we move a first step towards the definition of systematic procedures that, based on the MPEG RVC specification formalism, are able to produce multi-decoder platforms, capable of

In recent years, the concept of the metaverse has evolved significantly, with the aim of defining richer immersive and interactive environments that can support various types of virtual experiences and interactions among users. This evolution has given ris ...

Minimizing buffer sizes of dynamic dataflow implementations without introducing deadlocks or reducing the design performance is in general an important and useful design objective. Indeed, buffer sizes that are too small causing a system to deadlock during ...

In this paper we propose a design methodology to partition dataflow applications on a multi clock domain architecture. This work shows how starting from a high level dataflow representation of a dynamic program it is possible to reduce the overall power co ...

This paper describes the implementation of the MPEG AVC CABAC entropy decoder using the RVC-CAL dataflow programming language. CABAC is the Context based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding entropy decoder that is used by the MPEG AVC/H.264 main and high profile video standard. CABAC algorithm provides increased compression efficiency, however presents a higher complexity compared to other entropy coding algorithms. This implementation of the CABAC entropy decoder using RVC-CAL proofs that complex algorithms

This paper addresses multimedia end user system design for content distribution over heterogeneous networks and terminals, with particular focus on End-to-End quality of service (QoS) control. A multimedia terminal comprising content-related metadata processor, usage environment characteristics provider, end user QoS monitor and H.264’s extension Scalable Video Coding (SVC) audio-visual player in coordination under a terminal middleware, has been conceived and implemented. This end user terminal enables End

The trade-off between throughput and memory constraints is a common design problem in embedded systems, and especially for streaming applications, where the memory in question usually occurs in the form of buffers for streams of data. This paper presents a ...

In this work a high precision capacitive moisture sensor for polymers was designed and fabricated. The device is part of a compact, fast, and economic moisture analyzer capable of reaching a similar precision than commercial moisture analyzers based on the ...

This paper presents the OpenDF framework and recalls that dataflow programming was once invented to address the problem of parallel computing. We discuss the problems with an imperative style, von Neumann programs, and present what we believe are the advan ...

This paper presents the design of an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) with all the necessary electronic blocks to read out and control Conjugate Surfaces Flexure Hinge (CSFH) microgrippers. The ASIC was fabricated using a high-voltage 0.35 mu ...

Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is referred to as a multimedia streaming standard to deliver high quality multimedia content over the Internet using conventional HTTP Web servers. As a fundamental feature, it enables automatic switching of qual ...

In this paper we address the problem of translating high-level stream programs, such as those written in MPEG's RVC-CAL dataflow language, into implementations in programmable hardware. Our focus is on two aspects: sufficient language coverage to make synt ...

This paper presents a contribution to the development of rapid prototyping tools based on data-flow description. In this context, the efficiency of automatic translator tools from the data-flow description to C and/or HDL are presented using two design cas ...

This paper presents new optimization approaches aiming at reducing the impact of memory accesses on the performance of dataflow programs. The approach is based on introducing a high level management of composite data types in dynamic dataflow programming l ...

This paper presents a high precision capacitive moisture sensor for polymers that is part of a compact, fast, and economic moisture analyzer capable of reaching similar precision than commercial moisture analyzers based on the Karl Fischer method. The desi ...

In 2004, ISO/IEC SC29 better known as MPEG started a new standard initiative aiming at facilitating the deployment of multi-format video codec design and to enable the possibility of reconfiguring video codecs using a library of standard components. The ne ...
