Flexure-based constant-force mechanisms belong to the category of zero-stiffness mechanisms. They present a non-zero elastic restoring force which does not depend on the deformation of the mechanism. However, their design and modeling are frequently comple ...

Binary logic operations are the building blocks of computing machines. In this paper, we present a new programmable binary logic gate based on programmable multistable mechanisms (PMM), which are multistable structures whose stability behavior depends on m ...

An optical measuring element measures forces at least one direction. The measuring element has a single-piece structure. There is an outside wall with notches introduced therein. Each notch defines parallel edges, and the notches define more or less elasti ...

Using shape memory alloys (SMAs) as actuators offers several advantages, including high power density, large stroke capabilities, and friction elimination. These attributes make SMAs suitable for actuating flexure-based mechanisms in a wide array of extrem ...

This article describes a novel method for applying a contact force in the range of 1 to 100 μN with pointed probe on a microscale sample in order to perform ohmic electrical measurements. The solution is based on the new TIVOT active load cell combining th ...

This paper presents a novel goniometer which is designed for use with X-ray diffraction analysis in protein crystallography. The PRIGO (Parallel Robotics Inspired Goniometer) is a 6 degree of freedom positioning device, allowing 3 translations (x, y, z) an ...

The tasks of electrical micro- and nanoprobing require precision that goes beyond human perception and therefore, depend on sensors providing real-time feedback. Efforts towards automation in micro- and nanoprobing and emerging areas such as branched nanow ...

This article presents the design, implementation and characterization of a Littman-Metcalf extended-cavity diode laser. The extended cavity is closed by a roof (retro-reflecting) prism. The wavelength tuning is based on a two degrees-of-freedom monolithic ...

This paper presents the design, optimization, and validation of a novel flexure-based constant-velocity (CV) joint-called Anvil Joint-benefiting from the high axial load capacity of the known notch universal joint [1] and the low homokinetic defect of the known O 3 XY 3 universal flexure [2] relying on equatorial folded leaf springs. The Anvil joint and the O 3 XY 3 are analysed and compared through numerical optimization using the Spacar software, followed by finite element validation in COMSOL. The Anvil

The invention relates to an immobilizing device for a toothed wheel suitable for the field of horology where it can be part of a direct- or indirect-impulse escapement, in particular in a wristwatch. This immobilizing device (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) comprises: — ...

The present invention provides an image forming apparatus (210) as well as a developing cartridge (240) for use in an image forming apparatus, wherein a contact plate of an electrode (247) of the developing catridge is disposed to contact a bias terminal ( ...

This paper presents a novel planar four-bar linkage compliant mechanism (called 4-RCC) based on four flexure-based Remote Center of Compliance (RCC) pivots. With particular configurations and dimensions, the beam shortening of the RCC pivots can compensate ...

This book delves into essential, yet often overlooked, aspects of educational and scientifi c practices: the involvement of the body in knowledge acquisition and production, the collective nature of creativity, and the potent role of improvisation in all l ...
