In solid-state transformers (SSTs), as a promising conversion technology that integrates high-frequency galvanic isolation, a robust bidirectional power flow operation is essential, considering numerous SST real-world applications. Although an open-loop-operated resonant converter is suitable for the galvanic isolation stage in SSTs, a power reversal method (PRM) is required to diagnose the power direction transition and enable the current flow in the inverted direction by altering the modulation between tw

In large interferometric circuits on SOI-platforms a high number of phase tuners is required to control the flow of light. Furthermore, reconfigurable circuits rely on the control of the phase in each arm of a balanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) to create a 2×2 coupler with full control on the coupling and phase difference between the output ports [1]. Consequently, such circuits require a large amount of phase shifters densely integrated on the chip surface. To enable this, each phase shifter should

Continuous vital-sign monitoring enables early detection of abnormal physiological patterns, which is crucial for preventive healthcare. However, conventional monitoring devices face critical limitations: wearables have compliance issues, cameras raise privacy concerns, and clinical devices disrupt patient rest. This thesis addresses these constraints by developing robust Wi-Fi sensing infrastructure that provides a stable signal acquisition foundation upon which future diagnostic applications can be develo

Oscillators are fundamental components in electronic systems, serving as the timing reference for circuit synchronization. While crystal oscillators, particularly quartz-based ones, have been the industry standard, they face inherent limitations including size constraints and frequency range restrictions. As shown in Figure 1, different frequency reference technologies present varying tradeoffs between size, stability, power consumption, and cost [7]. Nano-electromechanical systems (NEMS) oscillators emerge

Although current trends in speech processing consider deep learning through data-driven technologies, many potential applications exhibit lack of training or development data. Therefore, considerably light signal processing techniques are still of interest. This paper describes an efficient technique for decomposing the AM and FM components of the speech signal, which is not based on frame-by-frame short-time analysis of the signal. Instead, we estimate all-pole models of frequency-localized Hilbert envelop

Novel Deep Neural Network (DNN) accelerators based on crossbar arrays of non-volatile memories (NVMs)-such as Phase-Change Memory or Resistive Memory-can implement multiply-accumulate operations in a highly parallelized fashion. In such systems, computatio ...

Distributed transactions on modern RDMA clusters promise high throughput and low latency for scale-out workloads. As such, they can be particularly beneficial to large OLTP workloads, which require both. However, achieving good performance requires tuning ...

Approximate circuit design is a promising approach to improve performances and energy efficiency beyond the boundaries of conventional digital circuits. Such strategy is suitable for error-tolerant applications involving perceptive or statistical outputs. This work presents a novel architecture of an Inexact Speculative Adder for high-performance applications with optimized hardware and advanced error compensation technique. This adder allows precise tuning of accuracy to match design specifications while o

We present a theoretical model to optimise the unidirectional motion of a rigid object bonded to a miniaturized dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA), a configuration found for example in AMI’s haptic feedback devices, or in our tuneable RF phase shifter. Recent work has shown that unidirectional motion is maximized when the membrane is both anistropically prestretched and subjected to a dead load in the direction of actuation. However, the use of dead weights for miniaturized devices is clearly highly imprac

A Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) resonator based 2.4-GHz low power receiver is presented in this work. The intrinsic high quality factor ( Q) of the BAW resonator (around 400 at 2.4-GHz) is exploited to provide channel selection at RF and in the frequency synthesis. A novel way of addressing multiple channels (arbitrary frequency) using integer dividers and a BAW digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) and thus avoiding the need for a PLL is proposed in this work. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the firs

This paper reports on the potential of RF-MEMS technology based on aluminum nitride capacitive dielectric and nickelsuspended membranes to provide RF circuit functions in reconfigurable front-end radios. The RF performance of capacitive switches, distributed MEMS transmission lines (DMTLs) phase shifters for beam steering and tunable filters, including center frequency and bandwidth tuning of bandpass and band-stop filters are presented. Detailed characterization based on S-parameter data demonstrates very

The SPS kickers are major contributors to the SPS transverse beam coupling impedance. The current ”flat chamber” impedance model for a kicker is obtained by applying form factors to the theoretical impedance of an axisymmetric ferrite beam pipe. This model was believed to be acceptable for the vertical dipolar impedance, as twowire measurements on SPS kickers revealed a satisfactory agreement. However, one-wire measurements on PS kickers suggested that this model underestimates the kickers’ transverse quadr

We report on the modelling, fabrication and testing of small arrays of mm-diameter PDMS lenses whose focal length can be electrically tuned. The lenses consist of an array of 1 to 3 mm diameter electroactive polymer actuators bonded to a socket that provides fluidic coupling between devices. The actuator is a membrane with compliant electrodes on both sides, which can be compressed by an electrostatic force obtained by applying a voltage to the electrodes (i.e., it is an dielectric electroactive polymer act

Personal digital assistants or mobile phones applications are not anymore restricted to multimedia or wireless communications, but have been extended to handle Global Positioning System (GPS) functionalities. Consequently, the growing market of GPS capable ...

This paper presents a novel tunable bandpass filter design with independent control of both the centre frequency and the bandwidth by means of analogue-series and digital-shunt MEMS capacitors. The filter is designed for operation in X and Ku bands with 4 pre-selected centre frequencies (from 10 GHz to 14 GHz) and with a bandwidth tunability of 70% (variable between 500 MHz and 1 GHz). The filter originally includes a fine frequency tuning to correct the centre frequency position that slightly and intrinsic

A compact carrier generation system enabling proper interoperability among quad-band GSM, WCDMA (FDD and TDD) and WLAN (802.11a/b/g) standard is developed. The implementation is achieved in 0.25μm BiCMOS-SiGe process. The measured tuning range is higher than 1GHz (3.05GHz to 4.1 GHz) exceeding by 25% the specifications. The VCO exhibits a phase noise of -118 and -125 dBc/Hz measured respectively at 400KHz and 1MHz offsets while drawing only 2.5 mA from 2.5 V supply. The measured phase noise at 400 KHz offse

We have realized millimeter-size rf inductors on silicon using a polyimide mold–copper electroplating coil technology. Subsequently, the coils are assembled with magnetic cover plates of commercially available bulk Ni–Zn ferrites of high resistivity. Using the magnetic flux-amplifying ferrite plates, we obtain a 40% enhancement of the inductance and a 25% enhancement of the quality factor (Q510– 20) for frequencies up to 0.2 GHz. Our results indicate the large potential of using bulk ferrites for RF applica

Fiber lasers in the visible spectral range at 603 and 634 nm were demonstrated using upconversion in fluoride Pr3+-Yb3+-doped fibers and Bragg gratings photoinduced in germanosilicate fibers. Reliable fine tuning of the all-fiber laser over 6.9 at 603 nm has been demonstrated using high strength fiber Bragg gratings.
