Inverse problems aim to determine model parameters of a mathematical problem from given observational data. Neural networks can provide an efficient tool to solve these problems. In the context of Bayesian inverse problems, Uncertainty Quantification Variational AutoEncoders (UQ-VAE), a class of neural networks, approximate the posterior distribution mean and covariance of model parameters. This allows for both the estimation of the parameters and their uncertainty in relation to the observational data. In

This paper presents a combined computational and analytical investigation on the probability distribution of the knockdown factor of hemispherical shells containing multiple non-interacting localized geometrical defects. In the analytical model, the statistics of the knockdown factor for shells with a single defect are explicitly linked to the statistics of the defect amplitude. The model is then extended to shells with multiple non-interacting defects of random amplitudes through a finite weakest-link form

Defect engineering in Zr-based metal–organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) has focused primarily on missing-linker defects. However, recent studies suggest that node dehydroxylation–which creates distortions and coordinatively unsaturated Zr sites (Zrcus)–may have a more significant impact on properties. The present work uses pair distribution function (PDF) and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with systematic defect manipulation to study the effect of node dehydroxylation and missing-linker defects in UiO-66. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as a versatile platform at the intersection of fundamental physics and applied science. Their atomically thin nature gives rise to distinctive electronic and optical properties, while simultaneously enabling them to function as highly sensitive, readily integrable probes of their local environment. Advanced optical techniques, such as super-resolution microscopy, have opened new opportunities to interrogate these materials at the nanoscale, providing optical acces

In order to fully utilize the technological potential of unconventional superconductors, an enhanced understanding of the superconducting mechanism is necessary. In the best performing superconductors, the cuprates, superconductivity is intimately linked with magnetism, although the details of this coupling remain elusive. Here, we address this gap by studying the electron-doped cuprate Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4−δ that has an antiferromagnetic ground state when synthesized and only becomes superconducting after a re

Zn3P2, made from earth-abundant elements, is a promising candidate for thin-film solar cells but faces limitations due to difficulties in achieving n-type doping and its large lattice mismatch with commercial substrates and a high thermal expansion coefficient, causing defects and cracks. Graphene substrates can address these challenges thanks to its weak van der Waals interactions with Zn3P2 allowing for mechanical transfer of the thin film and strain-free growth. This study compares five graphene substrat

Antiangiogenic therapy with bevacizumab improves outcomes in ovarian cancer but induces hypertension, leading to major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). While calcium channel blockers (CCBs) and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) are recommended for managing bevacizumab-associated hypertension, their impacts on cancer progression and cardiovascular outcomes are unclear. This study compared the effects of CCBs and ACEi on progression-free survival (PFS) in ovarian cancer patients treated wit

Perovskite-based multijunction solar cells are rapidly approaching the stage of commercial deployment, exhibiting extraordinary advancements in their energy conversion efficiencies over the past five years. For example, the most efficient two-terminal configuration that has been developed to date is a tandem structure combining perovskite materials with silicon (Si). Despite these impressive efficiency gains, the long-term reliability and stability of these solar devices remain significant concerns. One of

Multi-scale 3D architecture with highly localized fluorescence contrast in photosensitive silver-containing glasses by means of femtosecond laser writing can be obtained. We will present results obtained on electron-irradiated glass samples by EPR spectroscopy and in-situ cathodoluminescence. This allowed for understanding the initial phenomena of electron deposition and charge trapping by identifying the nature of point defects and Ag species. In addition, a careful point defects analysis of fs-laser writt

Common metal additive manufacturing technologies require intensive energy sources such as lasers to achieve the melting and bonding of a metallic feedstock. This leads to a sizeable carbon footprint especially for reflective materials such as aluminium. Moreover, it induces complex and turbulent melt pool dynamics leading to stochastic defect formation mechanisms that are hence difficult to suppress. We aim to propose an alternative approach similar to what is now practised on a large scale with thermoplast

inspectors that walk over the track and check the defects on the rail surface, fasteners and sleepers. In the case of concrete sleepers, rail inspectors classify defects according to their size and occurrence over 20 sleepers. The manual inspection is error prone, it is time consuming and it can be sometimes risky. In an eort to overcome these issues, SBB has developed a project called AISI (Articial Intelligence Streckeninspection) in order to automatize the rail inspection by collecting and analysing imag

We report the presence of defects in CH3NH3PbI3, which is one of the main factors that deteriorates the performance of perovskite solar cells. Although the efficiency of the perovskite solar cells has been improved by curing defects using various methods, ...

When it comes to designing software, the classic procedure consists of writing code that complies with the projects requirements first, and then to extensively test for bugs and defects. Although this approach is valid and can produce correct results, it is both time consuming and error prone. Moreover, depending on the time of detection, errors can turn out to be very difficult to correct. Model-based design however allows for verification prior to the coding task. The component-based approach allows to ma

Numerical modeling of the human cardiovascular system (CVS) represents an active branch of research which allows the medical specialists to advance in understanding of underlined processes of blood circulation and the heart work at any scale, moreover, it helps to analyze the potential problems which can arise in the CVS by modifying the parameters inside the mathematical models. Due to inability to capture in details the pressure and flow parameters without invasion into heart chambers, the process of diag
