Metasurfaces enable subwavelength control of free-space light for applications in sensing, nonlinear optics, and quantum photonics. However, their practical deployment is hindered by two key limitations: a tradeoff between low- Q resonances and weak amplitude contrast, and their predominantly static nature allowing only passive functionalities. These challenges are particularly severe in the mid-infrared (mid-IR), where the scarcity of low-loss materials constrains performance and scalability. Here, we demo

Real-time identification, tracking, and sensing of single living cells have the potential to transform cellular biology by enabling unprecedented insight into cellular behaviour and interactions, with applications in diagnostics and treatment of complex diseases such as cancer. One promising approach is near-field radio-frequency identification (RFID), particularly in the UHF band (300 MHz - 3 GHz), where identification ranges on the order of one wavelength can be achieved. An RFID system consists of a tag

We present a wireless electro-optical modulator based on a thin-film lithium niobate operating at a millimeter-wave frequency range of 80–380 GHz, where the wireless signals are coupled to the on-chip transmission line directly from free space via a large aperture antenna.

Implanted antennas are essential components of implanted medical devices. However, their gain and efficiency are significantly constrained by the lossy nature of biological tissue. Huygens source antennas, which combine fundamental TE and TM modes, are promising candidates for implanted applications, as the TE10 and TM10 modes exhibit relatively low near-field losses. Due to the differing loss characteristics of the TE10 and TM10 modes, the optimal gain and power distribution between these modes in an impla

Vortex singularities in acoustic and electromagnetic fields are instrumental degrees of freedom in advanced wavefront-shaping schemes and robust high-throughput communications. Laser sources that emit coherent vortices in free space have been demonstrated at optical frequencies, however their microwave counterparts, vortex masers , have remained entirely unexplored, despite their promising application potential as low-noise quantum sources and sensors. Here, we demonstrate a room-temperature maser emitting

Batteries are one of the cornerstones of the energy transition that we are facing today. The recent years have seen a rapid rise in the penetration of Li-ion batteries in our day-to-day lives, from electric vehicles to stationary storage solutions. However, this rise has been accompanied by numerous battery fires being reported, despite various standards in place for battery safety. This calls for dedicated techniques to detect a potential thermal runaway (TR) event with sufficient time ahead to warn the us

This paper presents the theoretical and experimental development of an integrated position sensor for lab-on-a-chip devices. The interest for single cell analysis is growing. However, this requires monitoring and controlling cell displacements in real time ...

In this paper, a plasmonic-photonic nanostructure has been introduced for efficient unidirectional coupling of free-space radiation to surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves under normal illumination on a subwavelength slit. The structure consists of a conv ...

A novel substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) horn antenna with partially detached broad walls is designed and analyzed. The conventional SIW horn antenna suffers from narrow-operating bandwidth, which mainly results from the mismatch at the horn aperture b ...

Measurements and analysis of a radio-frequency planar antenna are presented for applications in inductively-coupled plasma processing. The network of inductive and capacitive elements exhibits high currents under resonance which are efficient for plasma ge ...

The coupling between an inductive source and the plasma determines the power transfer efficiency and the reflected impedance in the primary circuit. Usually, the plasma coupling is analysed by means of a transformer equivalent circuit, where the plasma ind ...

In ITER, an accurate measurement of plasma current, with high reliability, is mandatory as this parameter is used to demonstrate licensing compliance with regulatory limits. For that purpose, several independent measurements based on magnetic diagnostics h ...
