Trip Detection Algorithms for Healthy and Amputee Individuals

Amputation disrupts normal gait biomechanics, reducing strength, balance, and toe clearance. These factors contribute to an increase in falls in amputees, leading to both physical injury and psychological burden. Powered and microprocessor prosthetic legs can potentially react to external perturbations, but fast and reliable perturbation detection algorithms are needed. We developed three different algorithms for trip detection, each based on a different approach: thresholds, machine learning, or anomaly de

RADAR-WMH: Relaxometry And Diffusion Analysis beyond Radiologically defined WMH

Background: White matter hyperintensities (WMH) represent the most visible manifestation of cerebral small vessel disease and of white matter pathology more broadly, yet empirical evidence points to a brain tissue injury extending beyond radiologically detectable lesions on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MRI. We present RADAR-WMH (Relaxometry And Diffusion Analysis for Radiological WMH), a multicontrast MRI machine learning framework that characterises white matter pathology through tissue micr

Decoding lower-limb movement attempts from electro-encephalographic signals in spinal cord injury patients

Restoring lower-limb function in patients with severe spinal cord injury (SCI) remains challenging. Spinal cord stimulation may enhance and reinstate lower-limb movements, but it is either used in open-loop control or its control depends upon residual motor functions, limiting its applicability in severely paralyzed individuals. The decoding of motor intentions from cortical signals may provide an interesting alternative in such cases. Electroencephalography (EEG) is an ideal solution since it is noninvasiv

Monitoring morphometric drift in lifelong learning segmentation of the spinal cord

Morphometric measures derived from spinal cord segmentations can serve as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in neurological diseases and injuries affecting the spinal cord. For instance, the spinal cord cross-sectional area can be used to monitor cord atrophy in multiple sclerosis and to characterize compression in degenerative cervical myelopathy. While robust, automatic segmentation methods to a wide variety of contrasts and pathologies have been developed over the past few years, whether their predict

Pediatric Musculoskeletal Radiograph Interpretation Among Orthopaedic Surgery Postgraduate Trainees: A Competency-Based Education Intervention

Background: Pediatric musculoskeletal radiographs (pMSK) are the primary imaging modality for evaluating injured children, yet there is no widely adopted, standardized approach to teach and assess this specific skill among orthopaedic surgery postgraduate trainees (OS-PGT). We evaluated an online educational and assessment intervention using pMSK radiographs to improve fracture/dislocation detection and risk stratification among OS-PGT. Methods: We conducted a multicenter prospective cohort study using a we

Cortico-Muscular Coherence Is Reduced Acutely Post-stroke and Increases Bilaterally During Motor Recovery: A Pilot Study

José del Rocio Millán Ruiz, Serafeim Perdikis, Tiffany Corbet

Motor recovery following stroke is believed to necessitate alteration in functional connectivity between cortex and muscle. Cortico-muscular coherence has been proposed as a potential biomarker for post-stroke motor deficits, enabling a quantification of r ...

Cortico–reticulo–spinal circuit reorganization enables functional recovery after severe spinal cord contusion

Severe spinal cord contusions interrupt nearly all brain projections to lumbar circuits producing leg movement. Failure of these projections to reorganize leads to permanent paralysis. Here we modeled these injuries in rodents. A severe contusion abolished ...

Effect of partial-thickness tear on loading capacities of the supraspinatus tendon: a finite element analysis

Dominique Pioletti, Alexandre Terrier

Partial-thickness tears of the supraspinatus tendon frequently occur at its insertion on the greater tubercule of the humerus, causing pain and reduced strength and range of motion. The goal of this work was to quantify the loss of loading capacity due to tendon tears at the insertion area. A finite element model of the supraspinatus tendon was developed using in vivo magnetic resonance images data. The tendon was represented by an anisotropic hyperelastic constitutive law identified with experimental measu

Optimal positioning of the stabilizing compression screws in reversed shoulder prostheses

Reversed shoulder prostheses are used for the treatment for glenohumeral arthritis associated to rotator cuff muscle deficiency. The glenoid component is fixed with peripheral screws, which provide the primary stability that is crucial for the long-term osteo-integration of the prosthesis. The number of screws and their position is not clear yet. The goal of this project is analyze the effect of these two parameters on the stability of the glenoid component. From micro-CT images of the scapula and the relat

Mechanical orchestration of tissue remodeling

After organ injury, a complex sequence of events is triggered to heal the tissue and to form a scar. Myofibroblasts, specialized contractile and secretory fibroblasts, are one of the many cell types that participate in the remodeling process. Myofibroblast ...

MAP kinase pathways in UV-induced apoptosis of retinal pigment epithelium ARPE19 cells

The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is constantly exposed to external injuries which lead to degeneration, dysfunction or loss of RPE cells. The balance between RPE cells death and proliferation may be responsible for several diseases of the underlying re ...
