Optimal positioning of the stabilizing compression screws in reversed shoulder prostheses

Résumé

Reversed shoulder prostheses are used for the treatment for glenohumeral arthritis associated to rotator cuff muscle deficiency. The glenoid component is fixed with peripheral screws, which provide the primary stability that is crucial for the long-term osteo-integration of the prosthesis. The number of screws and their position is not clear yet. The goal of this project is analyze the effect of these two parameters on the stability of the glenoid component. From micro-CT images of the scapula and the relationship between compressive screw force and bone quality, an optimizing algorithm will have to be developed in MatLab to estimate different screw positions.

Tendinopathie de la coiffe des rotateurs

La tendinopathie ou tendinite de la coiffe des rotateurs est une maladie touchant l'épaule. Aussi appelée épaule douloureuse simple, la TCR correspond à l'apparition de tendinites des muscles de la coiffe des rotateurs. Ces tendinites peuvent être d'origine mécanique ou dégénérative, et peuvent provenir d'un surmenage (hypersollicitation de l'épaule). Les symptômes sont proches en cas d'atteinte des muscles eux-mêmes ou de la bourse sous-acromiale (bursite). C'est la cause la plus fréquente des douleurs de l'épaule et son incidence augmente avec l'âge.

Shoulder problem

Shoulder problems including pain, are one of the more common reasons for physician visits for musculoskeletal symptoms. The shoulder is the most movable joint in the body. However, it is an unstable joint because of the range of motion allowed. This instability increases the likelihood of joint injury, often leading to a degenerative process in which tissues break down and no longer function well. Shoulder pain may be localized or may be referred to areas around the shoulder or down the arm.

Humerus fracture

A humerus fracture is a break of the humerus bone in the upper arm. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, and bruising. There may be a decreased ability to move the arm and the person may present holding their elbow. Complications may include injury to an artery or nerve, and compartment syndrome. The cause of a humerus fracture is usually physical trauma such as a fall. Other causes include conditions such as cancer in the bone. Types include proximal humeral fractures, humeral shaft fractures, and distal humeral fractures.
