With the new EU legislature, the track management and the Train Operating Companies (TOCs) have to be separated subjects and hence allowing the private sector to enter the market (also called as liberalization of railways). Up to this point, the market was ruled by one TOC (usually the national carrier) subsidized by local government. Its purpose was to provide accessibility and mobility to the general public. However with a new competition entering the industry, the traditional business model has to be ada

The development of road telematics requires the management of continuously growing road databases. Mobile mapping systems can acquire this information, while offering an unbeatable productivity with the combination of navigation and videogrammetry tools. However, such technically advanced devices only go together with significant investments in staff and hardware. The Geodetic Engineering laboratory of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne continues developing user-friendly and low-cost proc

To document an individual's longitudinal construction of risk is a logistically intensive task. To identify a logistically feasible approach, we review existing agent-based experience documentation approaches within the context of a specified risk source - performance of a transportation network. The most promising documentation method, GPS tracking, was then tested in a four month pilot study This study found that while GPS tracking documents an individual's activities in extreme detail, the psychological

Rapid population growth and city expansion, along with scarce resources for planning and management, are widely shared characteristics of southern cities. The System for Monitoring Urban Functionalities (SMURF) has been designed and developed for the city of Thies (Senegal) as a GIS-based software for supporting participatory planning and management in low resources contexts. The software instrument consists of a geographic database and of spatial indicators, for sharing information and evaluating city deve

Management of demonstrations developed by different groups is one of the responsibilities of the IDIAP system group. As IDIAP's growing, more and more demonstrations are available to present projects achievement and research results. The demos are often associated with programs and multiple data sources, which are not structural data. Therefore, the demo management becomes a tedious data-management task. To make this management work more efficient and dynamic, we developed an automatic Web-based demonstrati

The focus of this paper is routing in a wide area mo-bile ad hoc network referred to as a Terminode Network. Our routing scheme is a combination of two protocols: Terminode Local Routing (TLR) and Terminode Remote Routing (TRR). TRR is used for rem ote destinations. It utilizes the location of a destination obtained by the source using location management or location tracking. TLR acts when the packet gets close to the destination. The use of TRR results in a scalable solution that reduces d ependen ce on t

In this thesis we study two routing problems related to mobility. The first problem concerns scalable multicast routing when there is a large number of multicast groups with a small number of receivers. Existing dense and sparse mode routing protocols have the following problems when the number of groups is large, but the groups are small: (1) high overhead in control traffic (dense mode), (2) poor utilization of backbone links and (3) complexity of management of single core routers (sparse mode). Our solut

This paper considers the problem of routing in a wide area mobile ad-hoc network called Terminode Network. Our routing scheme is a combination of two protocols called Termin-ode Local Routing (TLR) and Terminode Remote Routing (TRR). TRR is activated when the destination is remo t e and uses loca-tion of the destination obtained either via location management or by location tracking. TLR acts when the packet gets close to the destination. The use of TRR results in a scalable solution that reduces dependence
