Hollow toroidal rotation profiles in strongly electron heated H-mode plasmas in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak

This work investigates toroidal momentum transport in type-I edge-localized mode H-mode plasmas in the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak, focusing on the formation of hollow rotation profiles under strong electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH). Applying the established momentum transport analysis framework to a neutral beam injection (NBI) modulation experiment, momentum transport coefficients were inferred self-consistently. This was done for phases with dominant NBI heating and with additional strong ECRH, durin

Process-driven optimisation of an integrated lignin-first biorefinery

Biomass is a promising feedstock for sourcing renewable carbon to produce biobased chemicals and materials. However, conventional extraction processes often lead to low utilization efficiencies of biogenic atoms due to the irreversible degradation of lignin. Aldehyde assisted fractionation (AAF) addresses this challenge by protecting the native β-O-4 linkage of lignin with an aldehyde. This biorefining process simultaneously produces aromatic monomers at near-theoretical yields, functionalized hemicellulosi

Differential impacts of drought and esca expression on Ascomycota fungi in the trunks and young organs of mature grapevines

Perennial plant decline is increasingly threatening the profitability and sustainability of agriculture and forestry worldwide. It results from intricate interactions between microbial communities, the plant host, and abiotic stressors. We investigated the effects of drought and esca disease on mature grapevine phytobiomes. Grapevines display no esca leaf symptoms during droughts, but the impacts of drought and esca expression on fungal communities and wood health in mature plants remain poorly understood.

Cheetah-cub-S: Steering of a Quadruped Robot using Trunk Motion

Auke Ijspeert

In Cheetah-cub-S we realized an efficiant concept by implementing a spine-like structure with one DoF into a quadruped, modular and mobile platform. We increased maneuverability dramatically compared to a robot with rigid spine, while keeping controlling effort low by using intelligent mechanics. Therefore, it is possible to steer via trunk motion without changing the gait or corresponding parameters. The robot weights 1160 g at 0.1 m (height), 0.105 m (width) and 0.205 m (length). Heat Transfer Augmentation in a Straight Channel via Two Oscillating Circular Cylinders

We consider flow-through systems in which the characteristic length is limited such that turbulent flow is not reached even at high fluid velocities, i.e., the flow remains laminar. Inthese flow regimes, inducing circulation or vortices in the flow enhances mixing and heat transfer. These can be created by placing obstacles in the flow path, for example. Heat transfer enhancement in a channel via a single stationary and oscillating cylinder was considered previously. Here, heat transfer augmentation by usin

A wearable system of micromachined piezoelectric cantilevers coupled to a rotational oscillating mass for on-body energy harvesting

Nico de Rooij

In this paper, we present a compact, wearable piezoelectric on-body harvesting system that uses a small eccentric mass from a common watch movement to mechanically deflect a set of micromachined piezoelectric cantilevers when excited by the low frequency movements of the human body. The piezoelectric cantilevers are directly coupled to the rotating mass via a set of pins located near its rotational center. The energy produced by each pluck of a single cantilever is 545 nJ, corresponding to a maximum output

Capturing human motion using body-fixed sensors: Outdoor measurement and clinical applications

Kamiar Aminian, Bijan Najafi

Motion capture is mainly based on standard systems using optic, magnetic or sonic technologies. In this paper, the possibility to detect useful human motion based on new techniques using different types of body-fixed sensors is shown. In particular, a combination of accelerometers and angular rate sensors (gyroscopes) showed a promising design for a hybrid kinematic sensor measuring the 2D kinematics of a body segment. These sensors together with a portable datalogger, and using simple biomechanical models,

Rapport final BiogasMotor/ programme de recherche chaleur ambiante et rejets thermiques; installations chaleur-force.

Daniel Favrat

The object of this work is to test the unscavenged prechamber ignition system on a 150 kW cogeneration engine feed with biogas. The engine performances in term of fuel conversion efficiency are observed and the reduction potential f the exhaust emissions below the Swiss limit are verified (NOx CO : 400 and 650 mg/Nm3, 5 % O2 and 0 % relative humidity) ; and the non-limited HC emissions too. The interesting variables are the air-fuel ratio, the fuel composition, the compression ratio and the spark-timing. Th

The physics of tokamak plasmas, in which electrons are heated by electron cyclotron heating (ECH) and whose current is driven by electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD), is investigated in this paper together with applications on tokamak A configuration variable (TCV) using modifications of the pressure and current profiles to improve the operational regimes. In order to explain the experimentally determined current drive efficiency and hard x-ray and electron cyclotron emission measurements, it is shown th

Heat Transfer and Pressure Drop in the Dryout Region of Intube Evaporation with Refrigerant/Lubricant Mixtures.

Daniel Favrat

A summary of the objectives and conclusions reached in this project are: •A litterature search on post dryout heat transfer for pure refrigerants and for refrigerant-oil mixtures was performed and a comprehensive review written (Chapters 9, 10, and 11); •The correct thermodynamic definition of the heat transfer coefficient for evaporation of refrigerant-oil mixtures was presented and then used in the project, i.e. defining the heat transfer coefficient using the local bubble point temperature Tbub of the re

The use of laser-light scattering and controlled shear in platelet aggregometry

Laser-light scattering was used to observe and quantify the dynamics of human blood platelet aggregation in platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Aggregation was performed in a controlled shear environment by placing the PRP in the annular space between a rotating cylindrical rod and a stationary cylindrical tube. The instrument was capable of very sensitive continuous semi-quantitative measurements of chemically-induced microaggregation. As a demonstration of the technique, results are presented for ADP-induced aggr
