Metabolic thermodynamics: pertinent reference state and energy potentials

Chemical potentials (molar Gibbs energies) are usually extrapolated to the remote physical–chemical reference state and then stored. Subsequent use under in vivo conditions requires a similarly substantial, reverse extrapolation, again with significant potential errors. In order to shrink both extrapolations drastically and thereby enhance both biological meaning and accuracy, we propose a transformation to a more biological reference state: pH = 7, pMg = 3, 99.5% water, with 1 m m each of the additional ‘p

Near Infrared Spectroscopy and Chemometrics for in situ Process Monitoring

This thesis investigates the application of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy as a process analytical technology (PAT) tool for in situ monitoring of physico-chemical processes, at ambient or industrially relevant conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, or in corrosive environments. The work originates from a collaboration with an industrial partner aiming at the development of a NIR-based method for monitoring urea synthesis in simulated process conditions. Starting from this, the thesis was ext

The selective boundary crossing in stochastic processes driven by white shot noise

Many physical, chemical, financial, and ecological processes show the presence of a threshold, which may affect their dynamics. For instance, chemical reactions occur when the energy reaches the activation value; for insurance companies and banks, ruin may happen when the balance drops down a minimum amount; in fluvial hydraulics, sediment transport, and morphodynamic processes start when bed shear stresses (i.e., flow discharge) overcome a critical threshold. Other processes may show the presence of additi

The morning commute in urban areas with heterogeneous trip lengths

Nikolaos Geroliminis, Raphael Ali Francis Lamotte

This paper investigates the equilibrium properties of the morning commute problem at the network level with heterogeneous trip lengths. Congestion is modeled with a Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram relating the space-mean speed of a network to the vehicular ...

Selective ion-induced grain growth: Thermal spike modeling and its experimental validation

Ion-bombardment-induced selective grain growth is a process that allows for full control of the orientation of vapor-deposited thin films, which can be converted from fiber-textured polycrystalline to single-crystal films. The main mechanisms behind this p ...

Catalysts for High Temperature Gas Cleaning in the Production of Synthetic Natural Gas from Biomass

Bio synthetic natural gas (Bio-SNG) is being proposed as an alternative to the natural gas of fossil origin (NG) [1]. Bio-SNG consists mainly of CH4 (at least 95%mol), has a high heating value (e.g. 10 kWh/m3N), and respects the quality standards of the NG ...

Thermodynamic study and re-assessment of the Ge-Ni system

Christian Leinenbach, Robert Andrew Watson, Shan Jin

The enthalpies of formation of the intermetallic compounds in the Ge-Ni binary system have been determined by calorimetric measurement and first-principles calculations. Based on the results obtained and information available in the literature, the phase d ...

Network thermodynamics in the post-genomic era

Network models have been used to study the underlying processes and principles of biological systems for decades, providing many insights into the complexity of life. Biological systems require a constant flow of free energy to drive these processes that operate away from thermodynamic equilibrium. With the advent of high-throughput omics technologies, more and more thermodynamic knowledge about the biological components, processes and their interactions are surfacing that we can integrate using large-scale

Synthesis and characterization of novel polyelectrolytes based on double-charged cationic monomers

Bis-1,3(N,N,N-trimethylammonium)-2-propylmethacrylate dichloride (di-M) and bis-1,3(N,N,N-trimethylammonium)-2-propylacrylate dichloride (di-A), two new double-charged monomers, were the subject of the research reported in this thesis. These monomers provi ...

Introductory Thermodynamics

Pierre Infelta

The fundamental aspects of classical thermodynamics are presented in a simple compact way. The equations derived are illustrated by numerous (111) examples, often direct application of the relations just obtained. The (four) laws of thermodynamics are presented and illustrated. The need to define thermodynamic temperature, the meaning of auxiliary thermodynamic functions, the origin, usefulness and use of partial molar quantities are all examined. Gaseous systems, phase equilibriua and chemical reactions ar

Physical-chemical Modification of Sodium Alginate ALGIMAR by Irradiation

Jutta Christine Wandrey, Dianelys Sainz Vidal

The effect of gamma radiation on the physical-chemical properties of sodium alginate Algimar has been investigated. Dilution viscometry, densitometry, and FTIR spectroscopy served to identify modifications. Decreasing intrinsic viscosities clearly revealed chain cleavage for both solid alginate and alginate in aqueous solution. The invariance of the partial specific volume and infrared results indicate that chain degradation occurs without significant change of the chemical structure. The obtained results h

Independently Extensible Solutions to the Expression Problem

Martin Odersky, Matthias Zenger

The expression problem is fundamental for the development of extensible software. Many (partial) solutions to this important problem have been proposed in the past. None of these approaches solves the problem of using different, independent extensions jointly. This paper proposes solutions to the expression problem that make it possible to combine independent extensions in a flexible, modular, and type-safe way. The solutions, formulated in the programming language Scala, are affected with only a small im

The Bases of chemical Thermodynamics: Volume 2

Michael Graetzel, Pierre Infelta

The Bases of Chemical Thermodynamics: Volume 2 In this volume (volume 2), the tools necessary to study and understand systems in which chemical reactions can take place are developed. The variables of reaction are the keys to this understanding. Criteria for chemical equilibrium are established. It is shown how chemical reactions can provide work as, for example, in batteries. For complex systems, the number of independent reactions and their nature have to be determined systematically. The effect of extern

The Bases of Chemical Thermodynamics: Volume 1

Michael Graetzel, Pierre Infelta

The Bases of Chemical Thermodynamics: Volume 1 In this volume (volume 1), the fundamental aspects of thermodynamics are presented. The first and second laws of thermodynamics are illustrated. The need to define thermodynamic temperature and the nature of entropy are explained. The book explores the meaning of auxiliary thermodynamic functions, the origin, usefulness and use of partial molar quantities. Gaseous systems and phase equilibria, in systems where chemical reactions do not take place, are described
