The main questions arising during a dam project in view of safety against scour formation downstream of spillways and bottom outlets are discussed. First the physical proc-esses involved in scour formation are analyzed based on the state-of-the-art of the knowledge and understanding. Then the different scour evaluation methods from simple empirical formula to complex scour models are briefly presented. The main difficulties encountered when estimat-ing scour depth are discussed, such as the choice of the ap

Cross-cutting and sector-specific measures will be necessary to decarbonize the industrial sites, which include the improvement of component-wise energy efficiency, heat and mass recovery intensification, and integration of more advanced energy technologies. However, industrial plants are generally not aware of the upgrading potential due to limited technical information about the existing and newly developed processes, or simply due to the lack of motivation, time or skilled personnel to conduct thorough e

This paper reports the main recent results of the RFX-mod fusion science activity. The RFX-mod device is characterized by a unique flexibility in terms of accessible magnetic configurations. Axisymmetric and helically shaped reversed-field pinch equilibria ...

In order to properly simulate cases in which gyrotrons exhibit fast temporally varying oscillations, such as non-stationary oscillations or possible dynamic After-Cavity Interaction (ACI), an adequate model for the beam-wave interaction has to be used. We will show that the commonly used assumption of considering a constant wave-field envelope during the electron transit time has to be abandoned. The appropriate model (reduced 1D Particle-In-Cell (PIC) model) is briefly presented and the implications of usi

The Deep City project at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne has, since 2005, been working on an alternative vision for urban planning in which underground resources (water, space, geothermal energy and geomaterials) enter early on in the process of imagining a city’s future . Such a vision is seen as providing an opportunity for sustainable as well as more compact, pedestrian-oriented forms of development through an explicit engagement with underground resources (in particular, space). Ma

This document summarizes adaptation experiments done on French MediaParl corpus and other French corpora. Baseline adaptation techniques are briefly presented and evaluated in the MediaParl task for speaker adaptation, speaker adaptive training, database combination and environmental adaptation. Results show that by applying baseline adaptation techniques, a relative WER reduction of up to 22.8% can be reached in French transcription accuracy. For the MediaParl task, performance of systems trained on direct

We present in this chapter a review of current work that leverages on large online social networks' meta-information, in particular Flickr Groups. We briefly present this hugely successful feature in Flickr and discuss the various ways in which metadata stemming from users' interactions with and within groups has been exploited by researchers to improve on state-of-the-art search and browsing algorithms. We then review recent works that have already made use of Flickr Groups, either as a data source, as a w

At the LENI a heat pump model has been developed, which aims to simulate a single state compression heat pump in both steady state and transient regime. For gaining the experimental data and for the simulation the same set of input data is used. The goal is to approximate the output values of the model ym to the ones measured in the experiments. Therefore a certain number of parameters need to be defined in order of obtaining the highest accuracy possible. At the beginning these different parameters γ need

The goal of this short presentation is to introduce Geometric Mechanics as well as Asynchronous Variational Integrators (AVI). The geometric point of view in mechanics combined with solid analysis has been a phenomenal success in linking various diverse areas, both within and across standard disciplinary lines. For example, symmetry was already widely used in mechanics by the founders of the subject, in such diverse phenomena as reduction, stability, bifurcation... Mechanics has two main points of view, tha

The necessity to take into account environment problems and in parallel a need for more energy, for the development of emerging economies, makes the management of energy sources a very important problem. The electric transmission network is charged with mo ...

This paper presents some applications of FRC in Switzerland and recent developments resulting from research activities carried out at Swiss university laboratories. The national recommendation SIA162/6 "Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete" is also briefly presented in relation to the practical use of this material in terms of quality control and design. Finally, some perspectives of the use of FRC in the Swiss market are given.

This article is the preamble to a set of articles describing initial results from an on-going European Commission funded, 5th Framework project called OMNIITOX, Operational Models aNd Information tools for Industrial applications of eco/TOXicological impact assessments. The different parts of this case study-driven project are briefly presented and put in relation to the aims of contributing to an operational life cycle-impact assessment (LCIA) model for impacts of toxicants. The present situation has been

It is now widely believed that low frequency turbulence developing from smallscale instabilities is responsible for the phenomenon of anomalous transport generally observed in magnetic confinement fusion experiments. The microinstabilities are driven by gradients of equilibrium density, ion and electron temperatures and magnetic field strength. Gyrokinetic theory is based on the Vlasov-Maxwell equations and, consistent with the ordering, averages out the fast particle gyromotion, reducing the phase space fr

A benchmark problem for restricted complexity controller design is introduced. The objective is to design the lowest-order controller which meets the control specifications for an active suspension system. The input-output data of the plant are provided on the benchmark site and the final controllers are evaluated using the closed-loop data. Thirteen solutions proposed to solve the benchmark problem are briefly presented and classified in terms of methodology and compared with respect to their complexity an

A review of the properties of ferroelectric materials that are relevant to microwave tunable devices is presented: we discuss the theory of dielectric response of tunable bulk materials and thin films; the experimental results from the literature and from own work are reviewed; the correspondence between the theoretical results and the measured properties of tunable materials is critically analyzed; nominally pure, real (defected), and composite bulk materials and thin films are addressed. In addition, tech

The active matrix display industry is briefly presented. The most challenging aspect for plasma source design lies in the substrate size which is now entering the 1-2 m range. This paper focuses on the conventional planar RF capacitor at 13.56 MHz. A detailed analysis of the local perturbation due to a hole in the metal susceptor illustrates the process effects of various plasma microscopic parameters. It appears that not only the process rate must be kept uniform, but also the ion bombardment. It is also s

The energy market liberalization requires using the actual transportation network in a more flexible and more efficient way. What is needed are strategies and facilities that will improve the energy flux sharing, as well as the maintaining of the node voltages. These goals can only be partially reached in the conventional networks. However, the FACTS are offering a very promising solution. The UPFL (Unified Power Flow Controller) will be briefly presented as an example of FACTS, and its behaviour will be il

Integrated optical devices can be fabricated by the deposition of an electrode/piezoelectric/electrode multilayer thin film structure onto optical fibers, The particular structure used in this work is Au/PbTiO3/Pt/Ti, where the PbTiO3 is deposited by DC reactive magnetron sputtering at high temperature to obtain in situ crystallised perovskite structure. Preliminary studies showed that the deposition temperature and the relative fluences of the Pb and Ti species are determining parameters for the growth of
