Interest in bioinspired peristaltic pumps has grown in popularity among the scientific community in the last decade thanks to their extreme flexibility and their intrinsic compliance. In this paper, we propose a soft peristaltic pump exploiting ballooning. ...

This two-part article reports on the renewal and adaptation of the fixed railway track in the heavily frequented underground train station at Zurich Airport. The fixed track built in 1980 had reached the service duration predicted by the system provider an ...

Riveted railway bridges are commonly considered as being “old”, having fatigue damage and are therefore replaced. While this practice should be by now obsolete by using novel engineering methods like structural monitoring, prolongation of the service durat ...

Editor's notes: The cross-layer approach presented in this article involves co-designing a feedback controller's parameters together with the schedule of an Ethernet network used for communicating state information and control signals.-Samarjit Chakraborty ...

We review the AIM 2020 challenge on virtual image relighting and illumination estimation. This paper presents the novel VIDIT dataset used in the challenge and the different proposed solutions and final evaluation results over the 3 challenge tracks. The f ...

Aerosol and trace gas measurements are strongly affected by the ship exhaust and other human activities (e.g., helicopter flights). Therefore, it is important to discriminate between clean and polluted periods. This mask provides an indication of clean per ...

This paper presents results on the impact of different tracks on the economic viability of track electrification for regional railway. Since regional railway still heavily relies on pollutive diesel propulsion systems, track electrification can be key to r ...

Due to the accumulation of traffic, the railway components are affected by the induced stresses. As a result, the geometry of the railways is degraded over time. The degradation occurs either through the partial loss of the track's geometry or through the ...

The transport of ballast caused by the overflowing of longitudinal drains is a prime example of the interactions between the railway track and its environment. In such conditions, water flowing from the platform, along with debris, may drag the ballast off ...

In the present work we intend to assess the readout feasibility of Avalanche Photodiode (APD) detectors via long signal lines for the development of a combined small-animal PET-MR prototype based on the ClearPEM technology. The detection performance of a L ...

This paper aims to start an analytical study of the computational complexity of some online We analyze the following problem. Consider a train station consisting of a set of parallel tracks. Each track can be approached from one side only or from both side ...

A system for user-guided audio source separation is presented in this article. Following previous works on time-frequency music representations, the proposed User Interface allows the user to select the desired audio source, by means of the assumed fundame ...

The geometry of the railway track is degraded under traffic load, and must be maintained periodically. This degradation is due to the arrangement of ballast particles under loads and vibrations, which results into irreversible plastic settlements. Tamping ...

Approximately 25 percent of the budget for the maintenance and renewal of railway tracks –in Switzerland more than a billion Swiss Francs– is used for the switches (points) and crossings (S&C). While in the mean time the budget expenditure for the maintena ...

The main information of a signal resides in its frequency, its amplitude (or its power) and in their temporal evolution. Thus, a great number of methods for instantaneous frequency estimation have been proposed in the literature. Most of these algorithms u ...

There is increasing concern about environmental pollution by diffuse emissions of various environmental hazards emitted by transportation activities. For the first time substances released by railways to the environment were investigated. We considered the ...

Switches and crossings (S&C) form an important asset of modern day railways. Current Decision Support Systems for track maintenance and renewal however do not provide help on maintenance and renewal management of S&C, due to the lack of understanding of th ...

This paper presents a novel method to correlate audio and visual data generated by the same physical phenomenon, based on sparse geometric representation of video sequences. The video signal is modeled as a sum of geometric primitives evolving through time ...

We present an algorithm for tracking video object which is based on an hybrid strategy. This strategy uses both object and region information to solve the correspondence problem. Low level descriptors are exploited to track object s regions and to cope wit ...

This paper describes the development of a control system and control strategies capable of governing multiple flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices in coordination with load shedding. The main purpose of the presented coordinated control system i ...
