Design of Customized Mouthguards with Superior Protection Using Digital-Based Technologies and Impact Tests

Dominique Pioletti, Naser Nasrollahzadeh Mamaghani

Background In contact sports, an impact on the jaw can generate destructive stress on the tooth-bone system. Mouthguards can be beneficial in reducing the injury risk by changing the dynamics of the trauma. The material properties of mouthguards and their ...

A review of the concepts, recent advances and niche applications of the (photo) Fenton process, beyond water/wastewater treatment: Surface functionalization, biomass treatment, combatting cancer and other medical uses

Stefanos Giannakis

The Fenton reaction was discovered over 120 years ago, yet our understanding of the complete reaction mechanism of the seemingly simple iron and hydrogen peroxide reaction (Fe + H2O2) remains unclear, thus limiting its full potential. In this work, the aim ...

Caries Detection with Near-Infrared Transillumination Using Deep Learning

Henry Markram, Felix Schürmann

Dental caries is the most prevalent chronic condition worldwide. Early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes and reduce the need for invasive procedures. Recently, near-infrared transillumination (TI) imaging has been shown to be effective ...

Scaffold requirements for periodontal regeneration with enamel matrix derivative proteins

John Christopher Plummer, Matteo Gregorio Modesto Marascio, Alessandra Apicella

Periodontitis affects the attachment of natural teeth, and infection or inflammation associated with periodontitis may affect peri-implant tissues. Enamel matrix derivative (EMD) proteins provide stimulation for self-regeneration of the damaged tissue when ...

Réseau de capteurs capacitifs pour la surveillance d'une occlusion dentaire

Marco Letizia

The invention relates to devices, systems and methods exploiting capacitive means for monitoring and analysing teeth-related parameters in a subject, such as the dental occlusion profile and/or the load/force applied upon clenching. The device comprises a ...

Description of Fornasinius hermes sp. nov. (Coleoptera, Cetoniidae, Goliathini)

Michele De Palma

Fornasinius hermes sp. nov. is described from North-East Uganda; type locality: Mt Morungole, Kidepo valley. The new species is reminiscent of Fornasinius fornasini Bertoloni, 1852 and Fornasinius aureosparsus (Neervoort Van De Poll, 1890), but presents a ...

Molecular dynamics simulations of the intrinsically disordered protein amelogenin

John Christopher Plummer, Matteo Gregorio Modesto Marascio, Alessandra Apicella

Amelogenin refers to a class of intrinsically disordered proteins that are the major constituents of enamel matrix derivative (EMD), an extract of porcine fetal teeth used in regenerative periodontal therapy. Modifications in molecular conformation induced ...

Implant-based three-dimensional superimposition of the growing mandible in a rabbit model

The reliable assessment of craniofacial morphological changes during growth requires invariant regions for image registration. As these regions have not yet been identified in three dimensions, intra-osseous implants are required as fiducial markers for th ...

The Influence of Arginine on the Response of Enamel Matrix Derivative (EMD) Proteins to Thermal Stress: Towards Improving the Stability of EMD-Based Products

Jan-Anders Edvin Maansson, Raffaele Mezzenga, Matteo Gregorio Modesto Marascio, Alessandra Apicella

In a current procedure for periodontal tissue regeneration, enamel matrix derivative (EMD), which is the active component, is mixed with a propylene glycol alginate (PGA) gel carrier and applied directly to the periodontal defect. Exposure of EMD to physio ...

3D Assessment of Mandibular Growth Based on Image Registration: A Feasibility Study in a Rabbit Model

Background. Our knowledge of mandibular growth mostly derives from cephalometric radiography, which has inherent limitations due to the two-dimensional (2D) nature of measurement. Objective. To assess 3D morphological changes occurring during growth in a r ...

Strontium hydroxyapatite and strontium carbonate as templates for the precipitation of calcium-phosphates in the absence and presence of fluoride

Janet Gordon Hering

The heterogeneous precipitation of calcium phosphates on calcium hydroxyapariLe (Ca-10(PO4)(4)OH)(2) or HAP) in the presence arid absence of fluoride is important in the formation of bone and teeth, protection against tooth decay, dental and skeletal fluor ...

Dental Phenotype in Jalili Syndrome Due to a c.1312 dupC Homozygous Mutation in the CNNM4 Gene

Jalili syndrome denotes a recessively inherited combination of an eye disease (cone-rod dystrophy) and a dental disorder (amelogenesis imperfecta), which is caused by mutations in the CNNM4 gene. Whereas the ophthalmic consequences of these mutations have ...

Hydro-mechanical coupling in the periodontal ligament: A porohyperelastic finite element model

John Botsis, Joël Cugnoni, Matteo Galli, Urs Belser

Harmonic tension–compression tests at 0.1, 0.5 and 1 Hz on hydrated bovine periodontal ligament (PDL) were numerically simulated. The process was modeled by finite elements (FE) within the framework of poromechanics, with the objective of isolating the con ...

Three-dimensional morphometry of strained bovine periodontal ligament using synchrotron radiation-based tomography

John Botsis, Joël Cugnoni, Urs Belser

The periodontal ligament (PDL) is a highly vascularized soft connective tissue. Previous studies suggest that the viscous component of the mechanical response may be explained by the deformation-induced collapse and expansion of internal voids (i.e. chiefl ...

Load Response of Periodontal Ligament: Assessment of Fluid Flow, Compressibility, and Effect of Pore Pressure

John Botsis, Urs Belser

The periodontal ligament (PDL) functions both in tension and in compression. The presence of an extensive vascular network inside the tissue suggests a significant contribution of the fluid phase to the mechanical response. This study examined the load res ...

The role of the fluid phase in the viscous response of bovine periodontal ligament

John Botsis, Joël Cugnoni, Urs Belser

The mechanical response of the periodontal ligament (PDL) is complex. This tissue responds as a hyperelastic solid when pulled in tension while demonstrating a viscous behavior under compression. This intricacy is reflected in the tissue's morphology, whic ...

Mechanical response of periodontal ligament: Effects of specimen geometry, preconditioning cycles and time lapse

John Botsis

This study was conducted as part of research line addressing the mechanical response of periodontal ligament (PDL) to tensile-compressive sinusoidal loading The aim of the present project was to determine the effect of three potential sources of variabilit ...

Regional structural characteristics of bovine periodontal ligament samples and their suitability for biomechanical tests

Marzio Bergomi

Mechanical testing of the periodontal ligament requires a practical experimental model. Bovine teeth are advantageous in terms of size and availability, but information is lacking as to the anatomy and histology of their periodontium. The aim of this study ...

Experimental and numerical investigations on the fluid contribution to the tensile-compressive mechanical behavior of the bovine periodontal ligament

Marzio Bergomi

Orthodontic treatments are all based on the experimental evidence that teeth can be forced to move in the dental arch by means of applied mechanical forces. Since it allows for prediction of dental mobility, the mechanical characterization of the tissues i ...
