Computational modeling of interval distributions in tonal space reveals paradigmatic stylistic changes in Western music history

Martin Alois Rohrmeier

Diachronic stylistic changes in music are to a large extent affected by composers' different choices, for example regarding the usage of tones, intervals, and harmonies. Analyzing the tonal content of pieces of music and observing them over time is thus in ...

Hearing structure in music: An empirical inquiry into listening as representation and processing

Gabriele Cecchetti

As a universal expression of human creativity, music is capable of conveying great subtlety and complexity. Crucially, this complexity is not encoded in the score or in the sounds, but is rather construed in the mind of the listener in the form of nuanced ...

Is Green A Good Color For A House? Typological Transfer And The LOG ID Experiment

Tiago André Pratas Borges, Anja Fröhlich

Architecture is a prospective discipline. In other words, the practice of architecture traditionally explores design methods in which a particular solution is speculated upon, in order to answer a particular set of questions. These solutions tend to be org ...

High brightness neutron source optimized for very high pulsed magnetic field experiments

Mina Akhyani

Conducting neutron scattering experiments in the presence of high pulsed magnetic fields, namely above 40 T, provides valuable information about the magnetic structures of materials. However, these experiments are challenging and time-consuming because the ...

A compact approach to higher-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering detection using photoelectrons

Henrik Moodysson Rønnow

The detection of inelastically scattered soft x-rays with high energy resolution usually requires large grating spectrometers. Recently, photoelectron spectrometry for analysis of x-rays (PAX) has been rediscovered for modern spectroscopy experiments at sy ...

Extremely Red Galaxies at z=5-9 with MIRI and NIRSpec: Dusty Galaxies or Obscured Active Galactic Nuclei?

Michaela Hirschmann

We study a new population of extremely red objects (EROs) recently discovered by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) based on their NIRCam colors F277W - F444W > 1.5 mag. We find 37 EROs in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS) field ...

Piezoelectric and elastic properties of Al0.60Sc0.40N thin films deposited on patterned metal electrodes

Luis Guillermo Villanueva Torrijo, Marco Liffredo, Silvan Stettler, Nan Xu, Federico Peretti

Sc-doped aluminum nitride (AlScN) allows for piezoelectric devices with large electromechanical coupling and the benefits increase with larger Sc doping in the film. However, with a larger Sc concentration, the process window narrows, and it is necessary t ...

Stellar Metallicities and Gradients in the Isolated, Quenched Low-mass Galaxy Tucana

Nicolas Lawrence Etienne Longeard

We measure the metallicities of 374 red giant branch (RGB) stars in the isolated, quenched dwarf galaxy Tucana using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) narrow-band (F395N) Calcium H & K (CaHK) imaging. Our sample is a factor of similar to 7 similar to 7 larger t ...

Recording physiological history of cells with chemical labeling

Kai Johnsson

Recordings of the physiological history of cells provide insights into biological processes, yet obtaining such recordings is a challenge. To address this, we introduce a method to record transient cellular events for later analysis. We designed proteins t ...

Inverse Problems in Pulse-Echo Ultrasound: Exploiting Coherence for Image Enhancement and Quantitative Imaging

Samuel Denys Beuret

Whereas pulse-echo ultrasound imaging relied on focused acoustic waves since its inception, the last two decades have seen the development of techniques based on unfocused waves, including ultrafast ultrasound imaging. In large part due to the emergence of ...

Seismic Testing of Adjacent Interacting Masonry Structures – Analysis of a Blind Prediction

Katrin Beyer, Igor Tomic

Masonry aggregates, which emerged as layouts of cities and villages became denser, make up historical centres all over the world. In these aggregates, neighbouring structures may share structural walls that are joined at the interfaces by mortar or interlo ...
