This interview was conducted for the series “Archives Through the Lens of Gender” on the occasion of the exhibition “ Crossed Histories: Gae Aulenti, Ada Louise Huxtable, Phyllis Lambert, on Architecture and the City ” at Archizoom in the fall of 2025.
Laura Hindelang addresses the difficulties of accessing and identifying archives related to women in architecture and highlights the need for methodological creativity to reconstruct hidden narratives. She critiques the centrality of the “male genius” in architectural historiography and proposes to rethink architecture as a collective process rather than a single authored object. By expanding the notion of “architect” (to include patrons, critics, users, etc.), she reveals the invisible forms of women’s participation. Her approach is both epistemological and political, aiming to decenter the heroic narrative and write a collaborative history of architecture.
