This roadmap introduces a novel second-order nonlinear optical model for vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG) and difference-frequency generation (DFG) spectroscopy.

Cryogenic systems are essential to many modern scientific and technological applications, including MRI superconducting magnets, particle accelerators, astrophysical detectors and quantum computing platforms, all of which operate at temperatures well below 120 K. In this framework, accurate temperature monitoring is, therefore, critical. However, conventional Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) suffer from significant limitations in cryogenic environments, such as wiring complexity, power dissipation, l

Measuring and inducing mechanical deformation are crucial to applications in healthcare, human-machine interfaces, and soft robotics. However, conventional rigid transducers lack the flexibility, integration, and adaptability required in adaptive soft systems. Integrating sensing and actuation within multimaterial fibers and incorporating them into functional textiles offers a promising route to achieve distributed and autonomous functionality. Yet challenges persist in scalability, material processing, and

Different techniques to improve the response of distributed fiber sensors are reviewed, which turn out to be far from simplistic as a result of cross-interactions between nonlinear effects.

Platinum/tantalum/silicon ohmic contacts were designed, fabricated and characterized to withstand high-temperature post-processing: the ohmic behavior was maintained after 1 h annealing, at temperatures up to 850 degrees C in an oxidizing environment. A LPCVD silicon nitride layer was added to passivate the contacts from oxidation and concentrated wet hydrofluoric acid (HF 49%) process steps; the later being widely used for the release of free-standing MEMS structures. The linear Transfer Length Method (TLM

In recent decades, rare earths have become vital to a wealth of advanced materials and technologies including catalysts, alloys, magnets, optics and lasers, rechargeable hydride batteries, electronics, economical lighting, wind- and solar-energy conversion, bio-analyses and imaging. In this perspective article we give a broad overview of rare earth resources and uses first and then of selected applications in dedicated fields such as telecommunications, lasers, photovoltaics (solar-energy conversion), light

High-speed laser manipulation is a key technology in applications such as fast optical switches for coupling light into optical fibres, 2D beam steering for optical scanners, laser printers or 2D sensors. A novel design of a Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF) bimorph actuator is proposed in this work as high speed switching element in the kHz range. The actuator of several cm length and 200 microns thickness takes advantage of the structural and electromechanical capabilities of the PVDF. A 0.164 g compact mirr

Strong optical confinement implemented with 2D photonic-crystal (PhC) microcavities provides a powerful tool for controlling the features of light-matter interaction. Combined with nanostructures such as quantum wells, quantum wires (QVTRs) or quantum dots, the PhC cavities - efficiently controlling spontaneous emission [1] are envisaged to bring superior semiconductor-laser performance [2], which could be exploited for applications in low-power-consumption integrated optoelectronics. Furthermore, inter-cav

A 3D imager is presented capable of capturing the depth map of an arbitrary scene. Depth is measured by computing the time-of-flight of a ray of light as it leaves the source and is reflected by the objects in the scene. The round-trip time is converted to digital code independently for each pixel using a CMOS time-to-digital converter. To reach millimetric accuracies an array of 32×32 highly sensitive, ultra-low jitter CMOS detectors capable of detecting a single photon is used. The scene is illuminated us

A heterodyne laser Doppler interferometer operating up to 100 MHz with an optical vibration excitation function was implemented to enable frequency detection of nanocantilevers. By using the stimulant of a network analyzer to sweep the modulation frequency of the laser diode used for photothermal vibration excitation, cantilevers measuring as narrow as 100 nm could be excited, and its natural frequency synchronously measured with the analyzer. Due to the gradient in frequency of the cantilevers, frequency s

The internal reflection of an excited X-ray waveguide mode in a synthetic nanostructure, defined by electron-beam lithography, has been measured. In this device, the X-ray beam is first coupled into a conventional vertical thin-film waveguide structure and then reflected laterally at the quasi-one-dimensional edge of the waveguiding layer. The reflectivity of the quasi-one-dimensional interface has been recorded under simultaneous excitation of the (vertical) waveguide mode. The experiment constitutes an im

A vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with two monolithically grown cavities is presented, The three-terminal device allows current injection into the active regions of both cavities, Under various injection conditions, the device lases continuous wave on either one of the two longitudinal modes supported by the cavity, or on both wavelengths simultaneously. By using a constant injection current in the bottom cavity, and adjusting the current in the top cavity, the device shows all four possible emission

Pump and Probe measurements with femtosecond pulses are performed on a Gain-Clamped Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (a special laser structure). The relaxation oscillations of the carriers density are observed directly in the time domain, Reasonable values of the differential gain and the nonlinear gain factors are extracted from the current dependence of the oscillations.

High quality InP/InGaAsP Distributed Bragg Reflectors (DBRs) are a key element in Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSELs) for long wavelength (1.55 mu m) applications [1-3]. Because of the small index difference between InP and InGaAsP, more than 30 periods are needed to obtain reflectivities above 99 %, which makes it a challenge for the crystal growth technique. In this paper we present the structural and optical characteristics of such DBRs grown by Chemical Beam Epitaxy (CBE) at high growth rate

This thesis deals with the monolithic integration of long wavelength (1.3-1.55 µm) p-i-n photodiodes with HEMT field effect transistors for the realization of wide bandwidth OEIC receivers for lightwave communication systems. Part of this work was carried out in collaboration with the Laboratory for Electromagnetic Fields and Microwave Electronics (IFH) of the ETH-Zürich. The p-i-n photodiode structure consisting of a n+-InP lower contact layer, a 1 µm undoped InGaAs absorption layer and a 100 nm p+-InGaAs

We tested a new soft-x-ray transmission spectromiscropy technique on the Aladdin storage ring at the Wisconsin Synchrotron Radiation Center. Transmitted x rays were converted with a photocathode into photoelectrons, which were subsequently electron-optically processed by an x-ray secondary electron-emission microscope producing submicron-resolution images. Test images demonstrated the excellent contrast due to the chemical differences between silicon features and a silicon nitride substrate. We also obtaine

We used optical pumping by the Vanderbilt free-electron laser and the technique of internal photoemission to measure with high accuracy the conduction-band discontinuity of semiconductor heterojunction interfaces. The experiment is the first application to our knowledge of a free-electron laser to interface research.
