The standard physiological model has serious problems accounting for many aspects of vision, particularly when stimulus configurations become slightly more complex than the ones classically used, e.g., configurations of Gabors rather than only one or a few ...

Understanding the factors that influence the human perception of glare is necessary to properly address glare risks in buildings and achieve comfortable visual environments, especially in the workplace. Yet large inter-individual variabilities in glare per ...

Designing architectural façades that allow sufficient daylight to create visually comfortable and pleasant environments is a challenging aspect of building design. It requires accounting for visual comfort and discomfort glare risks and understanding the f ...

Visual deficits are core deficits of schizophrenia. Classically, deficits are determined with demanding psychophysical tasks requiring fine-grained spatial or temporal resolution. Less is known about holistic processing. Here, we employed the Leuven Embedd ...

Human vision has evolved to make sense of a world in which elements almost never appear in isolation. Surprisingly, the recognition of an element in a visual scene is strongly limited by the presence of other nearby elements, a phenomenon known as visual c ...

Visual processing can be seen as the integration and segmentation of features. Objects are composed of contours, integrated into shapes and segmented from other contours. Information also needs to be integrated to solve the ill-posed problems of vision. Fo ...

A recent series of theoretical works showed that the dynamics of neural networks with a certain initialisation are well-captured by kernel methods. Concurrent empirical work demonstrated that kernel methods can come close to the performance of neural netwo ...

Classically, vision is seen as a cascade of local, feedforward computations. This framework has been tremendously successful, inspiring a wide range of ground-breaking findings in neuroscience and computer vision. Recently, feedforward Convolutional Neural ...

Flying robots are increasingly used for tasks such as aerial mapping, fast exploration, video footage and monitoring of buildings. Autonomous flight at low altitude in cluttered and unknown environments is an active research topic because it poses challen ...

The first amazing effect with #TheDress is that a large number of people perceive it as white and gold even though the true colors of the dress are black and blue. Such apparent changes in color are common in many illusions. What makes #TheDress even more ...

Crowding refers to the detrimental effect of nearby elements on target perception. Recently, Harrison and Bex (Curr Biol, 2015) modeled performance in a novel orientation crowding paradigm where observers reported the orientation of a Landolt C presented a ...

In crowding, target perception deteriorates in the presence of flanking elements. Crowding is classically explained by low-level mechanisms such as pooling or feature substitution. However, we have previously shown that perceptual grouping between the targ ...

In crowding, the perception of a target strongly deteriorates when neighboring elements are presented. Crowding is usually assumed to have the following characteristics. (a) Crowding is determined only by nearby elements within a restricted region around t ...

In visual crowding, target discrimination strongly deteriorates when flanking elements are added. We have recently shown that crowding cannot be explained by simple low-level interactions and that grouping is a key component instead. We presented a vernier ...

In crowding, perception of a target is deteriorated by flanking elements. Crowding is usually explained by pooling models where target and flanker signals are averaged. We show here that crowding is rather determined by grouping and good Gestalt. We determ ...

Contextual elements can strongly modulate visual performance. For example, performance deteriorates when a vernier is flanked by neighboring lines. On a neural level, such contextual modulation is often explained by local spatial interactions such as later ...

This dissertation proposes a computational framework targeted at improving the design of currently employed retinal prostheses. The framework was used for analysing factors impacting the performance of prostheses in terms of electrical stimulation for reti ...

Crowding limits peripheral visual discrimination and recognition: a target easily identified in isolation becomes impossible to recognize when surrounded by other stimuli, often called flankers. Most accounts of crowding predict less crowding when the targ ...

The perception of a visual target can be strongly influenced by flanking stimuli. In static displays, performance on the target improves when the distance to the flanking elements increases-presumably because feature pooling and integration vanishes with d ...

The perception of a stimulus can strongly be modified by its spatial context. For example, when a vernier stimulus is flanked by two lines, performance deteriorates compared to a vernier without flanks. This is usually explained by local interactions, such ...
