The recent rise in interest in point clouds as an imaging modality has motivated standardization groups such as JPEG and MPEG to launch activities aiming at developing compression standards for point clouds. Lossy compression usually introduces visual arti ...

The remarkable ability of deep learning (DL) models to approximate high-dimensional functions from samples has sparked a revolution across numerous scientific and industrial domains that cannot be overemphasized. In sensitive applications, the good perform ...

This paper considers the problem of distributed lossy compression where the goal is to recover one or more linear combinations of the sources at the decoder, subject to distortion constraints. For certain configurations, it is known that codes with algebra ...

Given a hyperelliptic hyperbolic surface S of genus g >= 2, we find bounds on the lengths of homologically independent loops on S. As a consequence, we show that for any lambda is an element of (0, 1) there exists a constant N(lambda) such that every such ...

We generalize the class vectors found in neural networks to linear subspaces (i.e., points in the Grassmann manifold) and show that the Grassmann Class Representation (GCR) enables simultaneous improvement in accuracy and feature transferability. In GCR, e ...

We report on scanningtunneling microscopy (STM) topographs ofindividual metal phthalocyanines (MPc) on a thin salt (NaCl) filmadsorbed on a gold substrate, at tunneling energies within the molecule'selectronic transport gap. Theoretical models of increasin ...

In this thesis, we explore techniques for addressing the communication bottleneck in data-parallel distributed training of deep learning models. We investigate algorithms that either reduce the size of the messages that are exchanged between workers, or th ...

In 1948, Claude Shannon laid the foundations of information theory, which grew out of a study to find the ultimate limits of source compression, and of reliable communication. Since then, information theory has proved itself not only as a quest to find the ...

The log law of the wall, joining the inner, near-wall mean velocity profile (MVP) in wall-bounded turbulent flows to the outer region, has been a permanent fixture of turbulence research for over hundred years, but there is still no general agreement on th ...

In this paper, we present the first results of a systematically designed multi-input multi-output gas-injection controller on Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV). We demonstrate the simultaneous real-time control of the NII emission front position and l ...

This paper develops high-order accurate entropy stable (ES) adaptive moving mesh finite difference schemes for the two- and three-dimensional special relativistic hydrodynamic (RHD) and magnetohydrodynamic (RMHD) equations, which is the high-order accurate ...

Edge-based and face-based smoothed finite element methods (ES-FEM and FS-FEM, respectively) are modified versions of the finite element method allowing to achieve more accurate results and to reduce sensitivity to mesh distortion, at least for linear eleme ...

This paper proposes a method for the construction of quadratic serendipity element (QSE) shape functions on planar convex and concave polygons. Existing approaches for constructing QSE shape functions are linear combinations of the pair-wise products of ge ...

Despite the increasing understanding of bentonite behaviour, there is still missing evidence on how different hydro-mechanical loadings, including sequences of hydration and compression, affect the fabric and the volume change behaviour of the material. It ...

Due to the increasing number of pictures captured and stored every day by and on digital devices, lossy image compression has become inevitable to limit the needed storage requirement. As a consequence, these compression methods might introduce some visual ...

This work develops new algorithms with rigorous efficiency guarantees for infinite horizon imitation learning (IL) with linear function approximation without restrictive coherence assumptions. We begin with the minimax formulation of the problem and then o ...

Previous works on age of information and erasure channels have dealt with specific models and computed the average age or average peak age for certain settings. In this paper, given a source that produces a letter every T-s seconds and an erasure channel t ...

Micromechanical homogenization is often carried out with Fourier-accelerated methods that are prone to ringing artifacts. We here generalize the compatibility projection introduced by Vond.rejc et al. (2014) [24] beyond the Fourier basis. In particular, we ...

The beginning of 21st century provided us with many answers about how to reach the channel capacity. Polarization and spatial coupling are two techniques for achieving the capacity of binary memoryless symmetric channels under low-complexity decoding algor ...

Locally correctable codes (LCCs) are error correcting codes C : \Sigmak \rightarrow \Sigman which admit local algorithms that correct any individual symbol of a corrupted codeword via a minuscule number of queries. For systematic codes, this notion is stro ...
