The web's local buckling is a major failure type of pultruded glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bridge deck subjected to concentrated wheel loads. Three kinds of external actions-that is, in-plane shear force, local compressive force and bending moment ...

Numerical models that can simulate coupled geometric instabilities in steel beam-columns are required for the seismic assessment of certain steel moment-resisting frames. Reliably simulating coupled instabilities requires that the steel material is precise ...

This paper presents results from an experimental evaluation on the pre- and post-buckling behavior of 12 steel wide-flange cantilever columns under axial load and lateral drift demands. The influence of several loading and geometric parameters, including t ...

Wood-wood connections, widely used in the past, have been progressively replaced by steel fasteners in timber constructions. Currently, they can be manufactured and implemented more efficiently thanks to digital fabrication techniques. In addition, with th ...

The significance of sustained loading on the compressive and tensile strength of concrete has been experimentally verified since the 1950s and is currently acknowledged in most design codes implicitly or explicitly. However; its influence on other potentia ...

Spurred by the recent advancements in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Integral Mechanical Attachment (IMA) technique has been resurrected. Using IMAs, connections between timber elements are established through their form, instead of using additional connecto ...

Adaptive structures have the ability to modify their shape and internal forces through sensing and actuation in order to maintain optimal performance under changing actions. Previous studies have shown that substantial whole-life energy savings with respec ...

Elastic gridshells comprise an initially planar network of elastic rods that are actuated into a shell-like structure by loading their extremities. The resulting actuated form derives from the elastic buckling of the rods subjected to inextensibility. We s ...

Deep and slender wide-flange steel beam-columns are commonly used in steel special moment frames (SMFs) in North America. These sections provide large moment-of-inertia required to satisfy the design code’s drift limits while keeping the column steel weigh ...

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) pultruded decks and sandwich panels currently represent two of the most extensive applications of FRP materials for load-bearing structural components in the bridge and building domains. Based on the state of the art, ...

Just recently, valuable experimental data that characterized the hysteretic behavior of deep wide-flange steel columns (i.e., column depth, d >16 inches) at full-scale became available. Such members are typically used in steel moment-resisting frames (MRFs ...

The seismic in-plane response of cold-formed steel (CFS) framed diaphragm structures has not been the subject of extensive study. The information available specific to diaphragm design in the North American CFS design standard is based on limited experimen ...

Since the first applications of structural concrete, the shear behaviour of one-way slabs without transverse reinforcement has been largely investigated. Nevertheless, currently in the scientific community there is no general agreement on the mechanisms of ...

Lateral torsional buckling (LTB), a complex phenomenon of instability, occurs when a beam is solicited by a bending force. In the area of steel and composite bridges girders which are characterised by slender plate girders, few experimental and theoretical ...

Steel and steel-concrete composite bridges made of plate girders represent an economical structural form and are largely used for short and medium spans. Two parallel plate girders connected by cross-beams define a twin-girder bridge. This type of bridge t ...

Separation at the web-flange junction is a common failure mode of pultruded glass fiber-reinforced (GFRP) beams subjected to bending. The causes of this separation appear to depend on the presence of lateral supports to prevent lateral buckling. To clarify ...

The effect of loading sequence on the fatigue behavior of adhesively-bonded pultruded GFRP double-lap joints was experimentally investigated by applying different tensile and compressive block loading patterns. The observed failure modes were consistent wi ...

The shear resistance of elements without stirrups has mainly been investigated by test setups involving simply supported beams of constant thickness subjected to one- or two-point loading, and most of the formulas included in codes have been adjusted using ...

Punching shear reinforcement is an efficient method to increase not only the strength but also the deformation capacity of flat slabs supported by columns. Especially, the increase in deformation capacity is desired so that the load can be distributed to o ...

An investigation of a new type of connection between precast concrete decks and steel girders, for composite steel-concrete bridges, is being performed by the Steel Structures Laboratory, ICOM, of Ecole Polytechinque Federal de Lausanne, EPFL. The connecti ...
