Among all materials, monocrystalline diamond has one of the highest measured thermal conductivities, with values above 2000 W/m/K at room temperature. Diamond nanostructures are increasingly used in photonics, electronics, and quantum technologies, where heat dissipation is critical. However, predicting nanoscale heat flow is made difficult by the predominance of momentum-conserving “normal” phonon-phonon scattering processes. Here, we use dilute nitrogen-vacancy color centers as in situ, highly precise spi

Dynamic processes such as crystallization, sintering and phase separation play pivotal roles in defining the structure and performance of engineered and natural materials. Yet, these phenomena are often challenging to study because they are transient, spatially heterogeneous, and span multiple length and time scales. Visualizing them in three dimensions under realistic conditions therefore requires imaging techniques capable of probing representative sample volumes with nanoscale resolution and minute-scale

Pyroelectric materials enable the direct conversion of thermal fluctuations into electrical energy, offering a promising approach to waste heat recovery. While pyroelectric polymers are highly valued for their scalable synthesis, mechanical flexibility, and tunable properties, the field is currently dominated by poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based materials, which present environmental and processing challenges. To develop fluorine-free alternatives and elucidate the influence of molecular architecture o

CMOS single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) are regarded as highly promising photodetectors for studying neutrino interactions with liquid argon at cryogenic temperatures (CT). This paper shows the performance of CMOS-SPADs using GlobalFoundries 55 nm BCDLite technology at CT. SPADs with deep junctions were tested to determine their performance. We measured I-V characteristics, dark count rate (DCR), photon detection probability (PDP), and breakdown voltage at various temperatures ranging from CT to room te

Introducing symmetry breaking in materials enables the emergence of functionalities. This can be microscopically and macroscopically driven by applying external stimuli such as mechanical stress, electric field, temperature, and chemical modification. For instance, non‐zero net dipole moments are formed in a material with the presence of local charged defects or their clusters, which can alter the crystal structure, charge states, and electrostatic potential across the material. Here, a conceptual approach

The cuprate high temperature superconductors exhibit a pronounced trend in which the superconducting transition temperature Tc increases with the number of CuO2 planes n in the crystal structure. We compare the magnetic excitation spectrum of Bi2+xSr2-xCuO6+δ (Bi-2201) and Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ (Bi-2223), with n=1 and 3, respectively, using Cu L3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. Near the antinodal zone boundary we find the paramagnon energy in Bi-2223 is substantially higher than that in Bi-2201, indic

The influence of dimensionality on the electronic properties of layered perovskite materials remains an outstanding issue. We address it here for Sr3Ir2O7, the bilayer compound of the iridate Srn+1IrnO3n+1 series. By angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we show that in this material the interlayer coupling is large and that the intercell coupling is, conversely, negligible. From a detailed mapping of the bilayer splitting, and from the intensity modulation of the bonding and antibonding bands with phot

Thermally sprayed hardmetal coatings can be used to improve the wear or fatigue resistance of mechanical parts. Depending on the deposition conditions, their microstructure and phase composition are out of equilibrium at different levels due to the extreme heating/cooling rates. In the present study, the changes that occur with temperature variation are monitored by mechanical spectroscopy. Requirements to specimen of mechanical spectroscopy created the need to prepare WC-17%Co coatings of 1.2 mm thickness

The dielectric, electrical and structural properties of (1-x) (0.94Bi(1/2)Na(1/2)TiO(3)-0.06BaTiO(3))-xK(0.5)Na(0.5)NbO(3) (BNT-BT-xKNN) with x=0.09, 0.12, 0.15, and 0.18 were investigated as potential candidates for high-temperature capacitors with a working temperature far beyond 200 degrees C. Temperature dependent dielectric permittivity (epsilon) showed two local broad maxima that at the optimal composition of KNN (x=0.18) are combined to form a plateau. This then results in a highly temperature-insens

The dielectric properties of undoped, Nb-, and Fe-doped Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 ceramics with composition near morphotropic phase boundary were investigated in the frequency range from 1 MHz to 20.2 GHz at room temperature. Temperature dependences of dielectric permittivity ε′ and loss ε″ are measured at 100 kHz from 50 to 300 K and around 13.4 GHz from 100 to 300 K. These measurements permit estimation of the upper limit of the intrinsic permittivity and lower limit of the extrinsic contributions to the permittivity a

The control of the current, position and shape of an elongated cross-section tokamak plasma is complicated by the instability of the plasma vertical position. In this case the control becomes a significant problem when saturation of the power supplies is considered. Current saturation is relatively benign due to the integrating nature of the tokamak, resulting in a reasonable time horizon for strategically handling this problem. On the other hand, voltage saturation is produced by the feedback controller it

For describing the E-J relation of high-Tc superconductors (HTS) in power applications, where the applied current I is generally limited by Ic, the critical state model, a piecewise linear generalization, or a simple power-law of the type E=Ec(J/Jc)^n are most often used. The power-law cannot be used for modelling the E-J relation with I>>I_c due to the unbound exponential increase of the electric field for currents above Ic, while in reality the non-linear HTS resistivity is limited by its normal state val

This article discusses neutron scattering measurements on the cuprate, high transition temperature superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) in an applied magnetic field. LSCO is a type-II superconductor and magnetic flux can penetrate the material via the formation of vorticies. Phase coherent superconductivity characterized by zero resistance is suppressed to the lower field-dependent irreversibility temperature (T-irr(H)) and occurs when the vortices freeze into a lattice. Because superconductivity is destroyed

We investigated the electronic structure of epitaxially grown silver films on Cu(111) with and without adsorption of cesium by means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy and two-photon photoemission. This system has been chosen as a model system to engineer and measure the dynamics of charge-transfer processes between an adsorbate and a heterogeneous substrate. Special emphasis has been laid on the investigation of the energy shift of the Shockley-type surface state and an excited cesium resonance as a functi

We use a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) setup to grow ultra-thin films of high temperature superconductors (HTSC) and transfer them in-situ into a photoemission chamber. Photoemission measurements on such films allow us to study noncleavable materials, but can also give insights into aspects never measured before, like the influence of strain on the low energy electronic structure. Systematic studies of many different materials grown as films showed that Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x, Bi2Sr2Cu1O6+x, Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+x, and

We used a pump-probe technique to measure the transient change of optical reflectivity of both La2-xSrxCuO4, of various dopings, and slightly underdoped YBa2Cu3O7-x and NdBa2Cu3O7-x thin films. For the La2-xSrxCuO4 films, our data demonstrate the coexistence, in the superconducting state, of two coupled subsystems with different relaxation times and different contributions to the optical reflectivity. One subsystem is associated with the superconducting phase. By contrast. the data from YBa2Cu3O7-x, and NdB

The nonlinear behavior of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) is often modeled by an E-J power law in order to describe their electromagnetic properties. This paper presents AC loss calculations in HTS tapes, performed by means of FEM commercial software using the A-V method. The implemented nonlinear model of the HTS tapes takes into account the B-dependence of the critical current density Jc and the power index n. The expressions for Jc(B) and n(B) are obtained from electrical measurements of a Bi-2223

We report on x-ray photoemission and absorption measurements on ruthocuprate and SrRuO3 samples. The ruthocuprates include samples that are both weak ferromagnets and superconductors for part of the phase diagram. The results indicate that adding hydrogen changes the many-body response on the CuO2 planes. The results further indicate that ferromagnetic order alters the core level states. We discuss implications of these data.

A Landau-Ginsburg-Devonshire-type theory is used to describe the mechanical substrate effect on equilibrium states and phase transitions in SrTiO3 epitaxial thin films. The misfit strain-temperature phase diagram of SrTiO3 films is developed taking into account the existence of two coupled instabilities (antiferrodistortive and ferroelectric) in this crystal. It is shown that SrTiO3 films remain paraelectric down to 0 K only in a narrow range of small negative misfit strains between -2 x 10(-3) and -2.2 x 1

We investigate by means of high resolution angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy the classical one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ and the inorganic one-dimensional conductor (TaSe4)(2)I. We measure dispersive features (1D bands) in accordance with band structure calculations. We observe typical bulk specific properties like the band periodicities (i.e. the Fermi wavevector) and the CDW-gap, which are in agreement with other experimental techniques. Peculiar for one-dimensional systems, we do n
