Lightning nowcasting is a key component of severe weather forecasting. This study demonstrates that density-based clustering algorithms, applied to lightning flash position and time data from the new Meteosat MTG-LI instrument monitoring lightning activity over Europe, offer an effective and interpretable basis for short-term lightning forecasting. We evaluate clustering algorithms such as DBSCAN and HDBSCAN and analyze the impact of parameter selection and flash density on their performance. Our results indicate that density-based clustering alone can reliably identify regions of increased lightning activity.
