Background and Objective: Computational models of the cardiovascular system allow for a detailed and quantitative investigation of both physiological and pathological conditions, thanks to their ability to combine clinical-possibly patient-specific-data wi ...

Dielectric elastomer actuator augmented aorta (DEA) represents a novel approach with high potential for assisting a failing heart. The soft tubular device replaces a section of the aorta and increases its diameter when activated. The hemodynamic interactio ...

The transaortic valvular pressure gradient (TPG) plays a central role in decision-making for patients suffering from severe aortic stenosis. However, the flow-dependence nature of the TPG makes the diagnosis of aortic stenosis challenging since the markers ...

We propose a mathematical and numerical model for the simulation of the heart function that couples cardiac electrophysiology, active and passive mechanics and hemodynamics, and includes reduced models for cardiac valves and the circulatory system. Our mod ...

Optimal pharmacokinetic (PK) properties of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are essential to achieve the desired pharmacological benefits in patients. To accomplish this, we followed an approach comprising structure-based mAb charge engineering in ...

IntroductionArterial wave reflection is an important component of the left ventricular afterload, affecting both pressure and flow to the aorta. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of wave reflection on transvalvular pressure gradients ...

Although heart transplant is the preferred solution for patients suffering from heart failures, cardiac assist devices remain key substitute therapies. Among them, aortic augmentation using dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) might be an alternative tech ...

The main theme of my thesis will be to use neuro-muscular modeling techniques to study locomotion of terrestrial mammals. Locomotion is the ability of animals to interact with the environment to propel themselves in space. It involves co-ordination and pre ...

Organoids are powerful models for studying tissue development, physiology, and disease. However, current culture systems disrupt the inductive tissue-tissue interactions needed for the complex morphogenetic processes of native organogenesis. Here, we show ...

Species that can regrow their lost appendages have been studied with the ultimate aim of developing methods to enable human limb regeneration. These examinations highlight that appendage regeneration progresses through shared tissue stages and gene activit ...

Although heart transplantation is a gold standard for severe heart failure, there is a need for alternative effective therapies. A dielectric‐elastomer aorta is used to augment the physiological role of the aorta in the human circulatory system. To this en ...

Systolic Anterior Motion (SAM) of the mitral valve - often associated with Hypertrophic Obstructive Cardiomyopathy (HOCM) - is a cardiac pathology in which a functional subaortic stenosis is induced during systole by the mitral leaflets partially obstructi ...

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is increasingly used to treat severe aortic stenosis (AS) patients. However, little is known regarding the direct effect of TAVR on the ventricular-aortic interaction. In the present study, we aimed to investig ...

Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) treatment increases heart function and decreases heart dilation after myocardial infarction (MI). Here, we investigated whether part of the cardioprotective effect of BNP in infarcted hearts related to improved neovascularis ...

Ageing is a natural process that affects both the anatomical and functional properties of the cardiovascular system and alters the coupling characteristics between the heart and the aorta. These alterations may predispose the cardiovascular system in the d ...

We construct an idealized computational model of the left human heart for the study of the blood flow dynamics in the left atrium and ventricle. We solve the Navier-Stokes equations in the ALE formulation and we prescribe the left heart wall displacement b ...

Mathematical models of the arterial tree constitute a valuable tool to investigate the hemodynamics of aging and pathology. Rendering such models as patient specific could allow for the assessment of central hemodynamic variables of clinical interest. Howe ...

The mathematical modeling of the heart involves several challenges, which are intrinsically related to the complexity of its function. A satisfactory cardiac model must be able to describe a wide range of different processes, such as the evolution of the t ...

In this work, we study the blood flow dynamics in idealized left ventricles (LV) of the human heart modelled by the Navier-Stokes equations with mixed time varying boundary conditions. The latter are introduced for simulating the functioning of the aortic ...

In this paper, we propose a full computational framework to simulate the hemodynamics in the aorta including the valve. Closed and open valve surfaces, as well as the lumen aorta, are reconstructed directly from medical images using new ad hoc algorithms, ...
