Imparting Module 2: Design and development of a step-by-step methodology for conducting a material and energy flow study
This course equips students with the theoretical foundation and practical skills to analyze resource flows in Small Island Developing States (SIDS) through a socio-metabolic research (SMR) lens. Using a systems perspective, students will explore the dynamics of material and energy use, developing a step-by-step methodology to assess sustainability challenges and opportunities in island economies.
A central component of the course is a group research project, where students will conceptualize and conduct an SMR study for an island case. This includes data collection (both primary and secondary), calculation of spatially explicit resource-use indicators, visualization, and interpretation of results. Through graded milestones, students will progressively integrate different aspects of the analysis to build a comprehensive system perspective, identifying socio-metabolic risks and leverage points for sustainable development.
Delivered through seminars and interactive group work, the course is structured over a weekend-intensive format (Friday & Saturday), with scheduled touchpoints throughout the semester for guidance. By the end, students will have hands-on experience in conducting a socio-metabolic assessment and applying their findings to real-world policy and planning scenarios.
