Number of independent partial structure factors for a disordered n-component system

Abstract

n(n + 1)/2 independent diffraction measurements are needed to obtain complete partial structure information for a disordered n-component condensed system. A previous assertion that only n of these are independent is shown to be inapplicable, for different reasons, to both the three-dimensional partial structure factors S-ab(Q) and the orientational averages S-ab(Q). The fluctuations of S-ab(Q) about S-ab(Q) and the effects of thermal motion are discussed. [S0163-1829(99)00491-4].

Protein structure prediction

Protein structure prediction is the inference of the three-dimensional structure of a protein from its amino acid sequence—that is, the prediction of its secondary and tertiary structure from primary structure. Structure prediction is different from the inverse problem of protein design. Protein structure prediction is one of the most important goals pursued by computational biology; and it is important in medicine (for example, in drug design) and biotechnology (for example, in the design of novel enzymes).

Somatic symptom disorder

Somatic symptom disorder, also known as somatoform disorder, is defined by one or more chronic physical symptoms that coincide with excessive and maladaptive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors connected to those symptoms. The symptoms are not purposefully produced or feigned, and they may or may not coexist with a known medical ailment. Manifestations of Somatic symptom disorder are variable and symptoms can be widespread, specific, and often fluctuate.

Kinetic theory of gases

The kinetic theory of gases is a simple, historically significant classical model of the thermodynamic behavior of gases, with which many principal concepts of thermodynamics were established. The model describes a gas as a large number of identical submicroscopic particles (atoms or molecules), all of which are in constant, rapid, random motion. Their size is assumed to be much smaller than the average distance between the particles. The particles undergo random elastic collisions between themselves and with the enclosing walls of the container.
