Discontinuous Palladium Nanostructures for H2 Sensing

Abstract

Various top-down, bottom-up, and hybrid fabrication routes of discontinuous palladium nano and mesostructures can be used for the fabrication of resistor based H2 sensing devices. 1D, 2D, and 3D structures can be achieved using appropriate material templating and self-organization methods. Sensing mechanism is based on reversible gap closing/opening under H2/H2-free atmospheres undergoing the conversion equilibrium between Pd and PdH0.7. Sensing performances depend on device designs and material microstructures and assembling/organizations.

Materials science

Materials science is an interdisciplinary field of researching and discovering materials. Materials engineering is an engineering field of finding uses for materials in other fields and industries. The intellectual origins of materials science stem from the Age of Enlightenment, when researchers began to use analytical thinking from chemistry, physics, and engineering to understand ancient, phenomenological observations in metallurgy and mineralogy. Self-assembly

Self-assembly is a process in which a disordered system of pre-existing components forms an organized structure or pattern as a consequence of specific, local interactions among the components themselves, without external direction. When the constitutive components are molecules, the process is termed molecular self-assembly. Self-assembly can be classified as either static or dynamic. In static self-assembly, the ordered state forms as a system approaches equilibrium, reducing its free energy.

Building material
