Critical Thinking (CrT) is generally characterized as an abstract thinking process, detached from the (bodily) actions one engages in during the process. Though recent cognitive theories assert that all thinking is action-based, the embodied and distribute ...

The learning process depends on the nature of the learning environment, particularly in the case of open-ended learning environments, where the learning process is considered to be non-linear. In this paper, we report on the findings of employing a multimo ...

The conceptual design phase is a fascinating moment to observe how a design task is interpreted, as the (often implicit) relative importance students accord to the various requirements and constraints offers a window into the thinking underpinning their de ...

Orchestrating collaborative learning activities is a challenge, even with the support of technology. Tangibles as orchestration tools represent an ambient and embodied approach to sharing information about the learning content and flow of the activity, thu ...

A wider incorporation of robots into classrooms is hampered by current technological limitations on full autonomy in social robots. Automated speech recognition, for example, a key enabler for vocal communication, is still unable to perform with sufficient ...

ENaCT is a framework for the design and analysis of critical thinking environments based on 4E cognition perspectives. In this paper, we describe a web-based critical thinking environment designed to implementoe the ENaCT framework. When users perform a cr ...

Collaborative learning appears in a joint intellectual efforts of individuals to understand an object of knowledge collectively. In their search for understanding the problems, meanings, and solutions, learners employ different multi-modal strategies. In t ...

Complex systems understanding is crucial for understanding the sciences of the twenty-first century. Helping students with the principles of complex systems is thus both a challenge and an opportunity. In order to investigate the effectiveness of complex s ...

Understanding how learners engage with learning technologies, and its relation with their learning, is crucial to the design of effective learning interventions. Assessing the learners’ state however, is non-trivial. Research suggests that performance is n ...

In a group, the collective dynamics is governed by the inter- actions between individuals, which can manifest differently depending on the available means of communication. In this paper, we compare 3 conditions of communication affordances (global chat, l ...

Nudges have been known to trigger behavior change for individuals in different contexts. In this study, we focus on designing nudges in the context of self-directed learning (SDL) of university students and aim to identify challenges and difficulties they ...

Teachers’ self-efficacy in managing classrooms is an important consideration when it comes to bringing educational robots to classrooms. Orchestration tools support teachers by providing awareness indicators of students’ progress as well as levers to contr ...

Embodiment has been known to have several benefits for learning. However, implementing embodied learning in a classroom with technologies such as Kinect, augmented, virtual and mixed reality and tangible objects is a challenge because of the infrastructura ...

Educational Robots are gaining popularity in classrooms but can increase the load on teachers compared to the use of more traditional technologies. Providing support to teachers can make teachers confident in including robots in their teaching routines. In ...

Swarming behaviors are ubiquitous in nature, and an important topic to teach and learn. In the learning sciences domain of complex systems understanding, studies have shown that novices tend to assume that centralized control and leadership should exist wh ...
