Orly MendozaOrly joined SOIL as a postdoctoral researcher in June 2023. He holds a master's degree in Physical Land Resources (specialization Soil Science) and a PhD in Bioscience Engineering (Natural Resources) from Ghent University. He is working on the European Joint Program SOIL project TilSoilC. His research is dedicated to exploring the effect of different tillage practices on the intricate relationships between soil mineralogy, oxygen dynamics and soil organic carbon stabilization. Orly's research spans across d
Sylvie Tram NguyenSylvie has background experience in teaching at university and working in multi-disciplinary firms in urban design, architecture, landscape and planning. In 2014, she joined Hong Kong University in Hong Kong as an assistant lecturer in the Master of Urban Design, to teach urban design theory, best practices and local/interntional design studios. Last year, she started her PhD at EPFL as part of the Lab-U at Habitat Research Center. Under the direction of Prof. Paola Vigano, her research regards river and watercourse transformations of peri-urban territories in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. She started her career as an architectural designer for luxury homes in Los Angeles after obtaining her professional Bachelor of Architecture at Woodbury, and became an urban designer in practice after graduating from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
Tanja Christina Käser JacoberTanja Käser is an assistant professor at the EPFL School of Computer and Communication Sciences (IC) and head of the D-VET laboratory. Her research lies at the intersection of machine learning, data mining, and education. She is particularly interested in creating accurate models of human behavior and learning.Prior to joining EPFL, Tanja Käser was a senior data scientist with the Swiss Data Science Center at ETH Zurich. Before that, she was a postdoctoral researcher with the AAALab at the Graduate School of Education of Stanford University.
Tanja Käser received her PhD degree from the Computer Science Department of ETH Zurich. In her dissertation, completed at the Computer Graphics Laboratory, she focused on user modeling and data mining in education, which was honored with the Fritz Kutter Award 2015.
Caroline KarmannCaroline Karmann is a PostDoctoral Researcher at the Laboratory of Integrated Performance in Design (LIPID) in the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne (EPFL). Caroline is interested in architecture and daylight in spaces, and in how our built environments affect our well-being. Her current research lies in the gap between visual comfort and visual interests based on the subjective and behavioral responses of occupants.
Caroline holds PhD in Building Science in Architecture from UC Berkeley and a dual Master’s degree in Architecture and Energy Engineering from INSA Strasbourg. Her doctoral project was devoted to indoor environmental quality in buildings using radiant conditioning systems. She conducted full-scale laboratory experiments and fields studies in 20 buildings. Her work was presented in multiple conferences including the ASHRAE conference, Windsor and PLEA, where she won Best Paper Award in 2018.
Caroline has five years of professional experience in the field of climate responsive building design. She worked as a consultant for daylight and energy at Transsolar (Stuttgart), where she specialized in building performance simulation, in particular daylighting simulation. Following her PhD, she worked for one year at Arup (London), where she conducted research on city resilience, and supported research activities through workshop facilitation and strategic planning.
