High-speed actuation of laser frequency(1)is critical in applications using lasers and frequency combs(2,3), and is a prerequisite for phase locking, frequency stabilization and stability transfer among optical carriers. For example, high-bandwidth feedbac ...

Gallium phosphide (GaP) is an indirect-bandgap semiconductor used widely in solid-state lighting. Despite numerous intriguing optical properties-including large chi ((2)) and chi ((3)) coefficients, a high refractive index (>3) and transparency from visibl ...

Solitons are waveforms that preserve their shape while propagating, as a result of a balance of dispersion and nonlinearity(1,2). Soliton-based data transmission schemes were investigated in the 1980s and showed promise as a way of overcoming the limitatio ...

Supercontinuum generation and soliton microcomb formation both represent key techniques for the formation of coherent, ultrabroad optical frequency combs, enabling the RF-to-optical link. Coherent supercontinuum generation typically relies on ultrashort pu ...

We theoretically and experimentally investigate the formation of dissipative coherent structures in Kerr nonlinear optical microresonators, whose spectrum encompasses an integrated dispersion that exceeds the cavity free-spectral range. We are able to acce ...

Earth-like planets, dark energy and variability of fundamental physical constants can be discovered by observing wavelength shifts in the optical spectra of astronomical objects(1-5). These wavelength shifts are so tiny that exquisitely accurate and precis ...

Solitons are shape preserving waveforms that are ubiquitous across nonlinear dynamical systems from BEC to hydrodynamics, and fall into two separate classes: bright solitons existing in anomalous group velocity dispersion, and switching waves forming 'dark ...

Passive Kerr cavities driven by coherent laser fields display a rich landscape of nonlinear physics, including bistability, pattern formation, and localized dissipative structures (solitons). Their conceptual simplicity has for several decades offered an u ...

The past decade has witnessed major advances in the development and system-level applications of photonic integrated microcombs, that are coherent, broadband optical frequency combs with repetition rates in the millimeter-wave to terahertz domain. Most of ...

A key challenge in microresonator-based frequency combs has been achieving f-2f self-referencing, which requires a powerful, octave-spanning microcomb. Stable self-referenced combs have numerous applications including ultra-low-noise microwave generation a ...

We demonstrate piezoelectric actuators monolithically integrated on ultralow-loss Si3N4 waveguides. Varying the voltage applied on the actuator allows tuning the microresonator, and is used to initiate, switch, stabilize and tightly phase lock the single s ...

Arising from modulation instability, Turing rolls in optical Kerr microresonators have been used in the generation of optical frequency combs and the synthesis of microwave and terahertz frequencies. In this work, by applying electro-optic modulation on te ...

We describe recent experimental observations of coexisting nonlinear states, including so-called super cavity solitons, in tristable passive Kerr resonators. ...

In this thesis, the generation of microcombs under complex, non-trivial, and/or higher-order cavity conditions is explored, both in theory & simulation, and in practical experimentation. Pulse-driving of microresonators is investigated for the generation ...

Ring resonators have proven to be extremely successful for generation of temporal dissipative Kerr solitons, but their dispersion engineering is limited. We present a photonic-crystal Fabry-Perot resonator with record-high quality factors in gallium phosph ...

Since their discovery microresonator-based frequency combs have drawn a lot of interest due to their compact form factor and potential for integration. We report on the recent progress regarding dissipative Kerr solitons generated from photonic chip-based ...

Dissipative solitons can be found in a variety of systems resulting from the double balance between dispersion and nonlinearity, as well as gain and loss. Recently, they have been observed to spontaneously form in Kerr nonlinear microresonators driven by a ...

We demonstrate broadband resonant supercontinuum generation in a Si3N4 microresonator with normal dispersion. Rectangular bright pulses are shown to form directly using synchronous pulse-driving, generating a 2,600-line comb at 28 GHz repetition rate. (C) ...

We report broadband bright soliton microcomb generation in the emerging platform gallium phosphide on insulator. We demonstrate a broadband dispersion-engineered photonic-crystal Fabry-Perot resonator with record-high quality factors. ...

We demonstrate a stabilization scheme for dissipative Kerr solitons in SiN-resonators achieving high comb stability and long-term operation. Measuring 10Hz level absolute Kerr comb line stability (at 1 second) close to the pump, resulting in kHz level stab ...
