Camille Aude RollandResearchCurrent Research Fields Microbes in radioactive waste disposalIn Switzerland, radioactive waste will be stored in a deep geological repository hosted within the Opalinus Clay rock formation. During long-term storage, hydrogen gas is expected to be generated through the anoxic corrosion of the steel containers that hold the waste. To prevent the accumulation of hydrogen, we propose creating conditions within the repository that allow microorganisms to grow and consume this gas. My PhD focuses on thre

- Operando Water and Ion Transport: I pioneered operando high-energy X-ray scattering and fluorescence (WAXS/SAXS/XRF) to directly visualize water and ion transport in membrane–electrode assemblies. These studies revealed how water movement, flooding, and salt formation govern degradation in CO/CO2 electrolysis, establishing the dynamic transport mechanisms in confined electrochemical environments. Yongpeng LiuYongpeng Liu is currently a final year Ph.D. student in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) under the supervision of Prof. Kevin Sivula and Dr. Néstor Guijarro. His doctoral research consists of solution-processed photoelectrodes (metals oxides and chalcopyrite) and operando spectroelectrochemistry. So far, some of his doctoral works have been published in 21 peer-reviewed scientific journals (8 first/co-first author, 5 second author, and 1 corresponding author) and have been presented in 15 conferences (8 oral presentations and 10 poster presentations). He obtained his master’s degree with distinction in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at the University of Glasgow in 2016. He studied Materials Science and Engineering in Huazhong University of Science and Technology from 2011 to 2015.
Mo LiBorn in 1988 in Shenyang, China, Mo Li graduated with a BSc and MSc in Chemical Engineering from Dalian University of Technology in 2012 and 2015, respectively. During this time, he worked on projects on membranes for gas separation and the synthesis of well-defined nanostructure. He then went on to pursue PhD studies in ETH Zurich in 2015 working on CO2 sorbents and metal-oxide gas sensors. In 2017, he moved to EPFL and continued with his PhD focusing on near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) for the investigation of CO2 hydrogenation mechanisms.
Dan RenDan Ren studied Materials Science and Engineering in the Shanghai Jiao Tong University from 2009-2013. He then continued his study as a graduate student in the National University of Singapore with Prof. Jason Boon Siang Yeo and earned his Ph.D. degree in Chemistry in 2017. During his PhD, he developed Cu-based nanostructures and bimetallic systems for efficient and selective electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide to multi-carbon products. He also developed in situ tools, especially in situ Raman spectroscopy, for probing electrocatalytic surface during carbon dioxide reduction and revealed the nature of active sites as well as the adsorbed intermediates. In early 2018, he moved to Switzerland and joined LPI as a postdoc. After working with Prof. Michael Graetzel for half a year, he was promoted to group leader and continued leading the solar fuel research subgroup since then. He is now working on electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction, operando Raman spectroscopy and system engineering for artificial photosynthesis. He has authored/co-authored >30 publications in prestigious academic journals and presented his work in >10 international conferences. These work have garnered >2000 citations and 6 of them are ESI highly cited papers (top 1% in the discipline of Chemistry). Together with Prof. Graetzel, he has successfully secured several grants both at national and international levels, including 'Solar-Bio Fuels' from Gebert Rüf Stiftung, 'SUN2CHEM' from EU H2020, '112CO2' from EU H2020, 'METHASOL' from EU H2020 and a collaboration grant from Saudi Arabia.
