Gas separation membranes based on single-layer-graphene are highly attractive because the size of graphene nanopores can be tuned to separate gases by the size-sieving mechanism. A prerequisite for this, the synthesis of high-quality polycrystalline single ...

Etching an ensemble of vacancy defects (nanopores) in single-layer graphene (SLG) to obtain a high density of nanopores with an effective size that enables high-performance gas sieving is challenging. This is because nanopore nucleation and expansion are u ...

Enhancing the kinetics of liquid-vapor transition from nanoscale confinements is an attractive strategy for developing evaporation and separation applications. The ultimate limit of confinement for evaporation is an atom thick interface hosting angstrom-sc ...

High-permeance, molecular-sieving, nanoporous single-layer graphene (NSLG) membranes are highly promising for gas separation. However, the formation of cracks during the transfer of NSLG to a low-cost porous support is difficult to avoid. These cracks are ...

The use of oxygen-enriched air (OEA) is an important strategy for reducing process cost and CO2 emissions in several industrial processes. Membrane-based processes, attributing to their high energy efficiency, are promising alternatives to cryogenic distil ...

Controlled atomic patterning is an attractive tool to fine tune properties of graphitic lattice. Several O-functionalized derivatives of graphitic lattice have been widely studied, e.g., graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide, and functionalized carbon nan ...

This study presents an optimized and scalable crosslinking approach for poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes in solvent-resistant nanofiltration (SRNF), emphasizing cost efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. The effect of four swellin ...

High-performance membrane-based H2/CO2 separation offers a promising way to reduce the energy costs of precombustion capture. Current membranes, often made from two-dimensional laminates like metal-organic frameworks, have limitations due to complex fabric ...

Single-layer graphene films, crystallized by chemical vapor deposition, host a low density of vacancy defects that are attractive for the size-sieving of molecules. The size and the density of such defects are a function of the growth temperature and the c ...

A new approach for large-scale fabrication of miniaturized, reliable and planar solid-state reference electrodes on flexible substrates is presented. Inkjet printing technique was used for the fabrication of conductive path and silver patterns that were ch ...

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are a subset of metal-organic frameworks with more than 200 characterized crystalline and amorphous networks made of divalent transition metal centres (for example, Zn2+ and Co2+) linked by imidazolate linkers. ZIF th ...

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) host intrinsically porous structure and rich structural and chemical features. Several MOFs with pore aperture comparable to the size of gas molecules have attracted interest to form the selective layer of membranes. Synthes ...

Porous carbon films, attributed to their superior thermal and chemical robustness, are attractive for a number of applications. In the context of molecular separation, a major focus has been on films where the effective pore diameter is lower than 1 nm, e. ...

Oxidation of graphitic materials has been studied for more than a century to synthesize materials such as graphene oxide, nanoporous graphene, and to cut or unzip carbon nanotubes. However, the understanding of the early stages of oxidation is limited to t ...

Tuning the reactivity of graphene enables molecular-level engineering of the lattice, achieving desired chemical and structural properties through functionalization, doping, and etching. Atom-thin graphene film hosting Å-scale pores, with capability to dif ...

Poly(triazine imide) or PTI is a promising material for molecular sieving membranes, thanks to its atom-thick ordered lattice with an extremely high density (1.6 x 10(14)pores per cm(2)) of triangular-shaped nanopores of similar to 0.34 nm diameter. Here, ...

A robust synthesis methodology for crystallizing nanoporous single-layer graphene hosting a high density of size-selective nanopores is urgently needed to realize the true potential of two-dimensional membranes for gas separation. Currently, there are no c ...

The single-layer graphene film, when incorporated with molecular-sized pores, is predicted to be the ultimate membrane. However, the major bottlenecks have been the crack-free transfer of large-area graphene on a porous support, and the incorporation of mo ...

Zero-dimensional pores spanning only a few angstroms in size in two-dimensional materials such as graphene are some of the most promising systems for designing ion-ion selective membranes. However, the key challenge in the field is that so far a crack-free ...

Metal organic frameworks or MOFs have witnessed a phenomenal rise owing to a highly tunable synthetic chemistry allowing flexibility in the selection of its constituents, namely metal nodes and linkers. Combined with their superior adsorption and diffusion ...
