Endocarp biomass, which forms much of the inedible portion of nuts and stone fruits, is a promising feedstock for aromatic chemical production due to its high lignin content and because it is a food industry waste. Here, we tested the nut shells and fruit ...

Biomass is a possible renewable alternative to fossil carbon sources. Today, many bio-resources can be converted to direct substitutes or suitable alternatives to fossil-based fuels and chemicals. However, catalyst deactivation under the harsh, often liqui ...

CO2 catalytic hydrogenation to CO will likely be an important part of CO2 mitigation and valorization processes. Recently, we have developed materials containing surface-formed Cu-Al spinel that act as active and stable catalysts for this reaction. Here, t ...

Using acetal-stabilized lignin we performed a truly steady state continuous high-yielding lignin depolymerization (45% monophenolics using Ni/C), which offered a window into challenges and opportunities that will be faced when processing this feedstock. Wi ...

Tailoring the interfacial sites between metals and metal oxides can be an essential tool in designing heterogeneous catalysts. These interfacial sites play a vital role in many renewable applications, for instance, catalytic CO2 reduction. Postsynthesis de ...

We studied and compared the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) and depolymerization of aldehyde-stabilized lignin and 4-propylguaiacol (PG), a model lignin monomer. We demonstrated by liquid phase adsorption that PG HDO catalyzed by Ru/C can be achieved in isooctane ...

Hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells are promising as an energy conversion technology, but require platinum group metal electrocatalysts for their application. A Ni-based hydrogen oxidation reaction catalyst is now shown to exhibit unprecedented electroc ...

Thanks to chemical stabilization, aldehyde-assisted fractionation (AAF) of lignocellulosic biomass has recently emerged as a powerful tool for the production of largely uncondensed lignin. Depolymerization of AAF lignin via ether deavage provides aromatic ...

Practical, high-yield lignin depolymerization methods could greatly increase biorefinery productivity and profitability. However, development of these methods is limited by the presence of interunit carbon-carbon bonds within native lignin, and further by ...

The reverse water gas shift reaction is considered to be a highly attractive catalytic route for CO2 recycling in a future sustainable economy. Copperbased catalysts are commonly used for this reaction due to their high activity and selectivity. However, t ...

An efficient adsorbent for butadiene was synthesized via soft hydrothermal treatment (2 h in boiling water followed by 1 h calcination at 573 K) of industrial Na-X. The adsorption capacity of the zeolite was studied in the low concentration range (20–300 p ...

Cu-Al spinet oxide is a highly active catalyst for CO2 conversion to CO. However, it suffers from low surface area. By depositing a silica layer, we protected the catalyst surface and preserved the Cu2+ ions during the calcination process. These ions form ...

H-ZSM-5 zeolite has been shown to be an active catalyst for the synthesis of polyoxymethylene dimethyl ethers (OME). However, we demonstrated – by passivation of the zeolite's external surface – that the reaction rate is limited due to severe internal diff ...

In this study,we reportthat intercalationof tin into montmor-illoniteclay (Sn-MMT)boostscatalyticactivityfor the synthesisof polyoxymethylenedimethylethers,a promisingdieselfueladditive. This increasein activityis attributedto the formationof a hierarchical ...
