A shape-memory effect is known to appear in red gold alloys with compositions close to Au-Cu. The aim of this paper is to study by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) the variant selection in the A1 -> L1(0) transformation occurring under stress, in be ...

Recently, a new thermally activated distortion with amplification (TADA) effect has been reported in red gold alloys caused by the A1 -> L1(0) phase transformation. The macroscopic amplification is due to the persistence of variant selection nucleated unde ...

Microstructure evolution within the post-dynamic regime following hot deformation was investigated in Inconel 718 samples with different dynamically recrystallized volume fractions and under conditions such that no delta-phase particles were present. In si ...

A significant variant selection is reported in isothermal martensite formed on the surface of an Fe-30% Ni sample. The selection phenomenon is modelled using different descriptions of the martensitic phase transformation. In particular, matrices based on t ...

One of the remaining challenges in Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) of metals is the control of the formation of keyhole pores, resulting from a local excessive energy input during processing. Such defects can lead to degraded mechanical properties and are t ...

Earth-abundant semiconducting materials are a potential solution for large-scale deployment of solar cells at a lower cost. Zinc phosphide (Zn3P2) is one such Earth-abundant material with optoelectronic properties suitable for photovoltaics. Herein, we rep ...

In this work we perform a neutron Bragg edge tomography of stainless steel 316L additive manufacturing samples, one as built via standard laser powder bed fusion, and one using the novel three-dimensional (3D) laser shock peening technique. First, we consi ...

The mechanical behavior of zinc has been studied and linked to the formability of sheets. An anisotropic elastic-viscoplastic behavior law has been developed to take into account the anisotropy of the material. Anisotropy is induced by crystallographic and ...

Watchmakers and jewellers are looking for novel 18 carat (ct) gold alloys (75 wt% Au) that combine superior hardness (≥ 300 HV) and scratch resistance with the excellent ductility and machinability characteristic of traditional 18 ct Au–Cu–Ag alloys. The A ...

The recrystallization behavior of an Al-Cu-Mg alloy is investigated in multi-directionally forged over-aged and solution treated alloys, during non-isothermal annealing. Deformation and non-isothermal annealing are performed with a Gleeble 3800 thermo-mech ...

Ferritic-martensitic Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) steels are potential materials for fuel pin cladding in Sodium Fast Reactor (SFR) and their optimisation is essential for future industrial applications. In this paper, a feasibility study concerning ...

Particle stimulated nucleation (PSN) is one of the importantmechanisms of recrystallizationwhich is investigated in this research during non-isothermal annealing of multi-directionally forged solution treated aluminum alloy 2024. Non-isothermal annealing i ...

Laser powder bed fusion of metals (PBF-LB/M) is a pivotal additive manufacturing technique that enables the production of intricate components. In addition to enabling the production of complex shapes, it allows for a high degree of freedom in manipulating ...

This study elucidates the evolution of martensite deformation via Interaction Work (IW). The IW is the mechanical work done by external loading, assisting deformation by competing with the energy barrier. This interplay establishes the maximum IW (IWmax) c ...

Harnessing the full potential of the metal-based Laser Powder Bed Fusion process (LPBF) relies heavily on how effectively the overall reliability and stability of the manufactured part can be ensured. To this aim, the recent advances in sensorization and p ...

This paper describes a hybrid additive manufacturing process – 3D Laser Shock Peening (3D LSP), based on the integration of Laser Shock Peening (LSP) with selective laser melting (SLM). The well-known tensile residual stresses (TRS) in the as – built (AB) ...

Single-crystal magnesium micropillars (5 mu m diameter) have been fabricated using focused ion beam (FIB) milling and loaded in compression along the [2110] direction at cryogenic temperature (T = 184 K) at three different strain rates: 10-4, 5 x 10-3 and ...

A method for manufacturing an object including the steps of forming layers by adding successive layers of material to form the object by selective laser melting (SLM), and inducing plastic deformation and residual stress into solidified material of at leas ...

Experimental and numerical cup drawing process has been investigated on 0.65 mm zinc sheets. The cup exhibits anisotropic earrings due to the material microstructure. The material formability is studied through elliptical bulge tests in the rolling, diagon ...

Fine twinned microstructures with {225}γ habit planes are commonly observed in martensitic steels. The present study shows that an equibalanced combination of twin-related variants associated to the Kurdjumov-Sachs orientation relationship is equivalent to ...
