Spin-orbit coupling in noncentrosymmetric crystals leads to spin-momentum locking - a directional relationship between an electron's spin angular momentum and its linear momentum. Isotropic orthogonal Rashba spin-momentum locking has been studied for decad ...

Quantum wires with spin-orbit coupling provide a unique opportunity to simultaneously control the coupling strength and the screened Coulomb interactions where new exotic phases of matter can be explored. Here we report on the observation of an exotic spin ...

Two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) forming at the interfaces of transition metal oxides(1-3) exhibit a range of properties, including tunable insulator-superconductor-metal transitions(4-6), large magnetoresistance(7), coexisting ferromagnetism and sup ...

Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we addressed the surface electronic structure of bent SrTiO 3 (STO) (001) wafers. Using a custom-made device, we observe that the low-dimensional states that em ...

Rashba materials have appeared as an ideal playground for spin-to-charge conversion in prototype spintronics devices. Among them, alpha-GeTe(111) is a non-centrosymmetric ferroelectric semiconductor for which a strong spin-orbit interaction gives rise to g ...

The concept of a multichannel electron spin detector based on optical imaging principles and Mott scattering (iMott) is presented. A multichannel electron image produced by a standard angle-resolving (photo) electron analyzer or microscope is re-imaged by ...

The ferroelectric semiconductor alpha-SnTe has been regarded as a topological crystalline insulator, and the dispersion of its surface states has been intensively measured with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) over the past decade. However ...

Recent theoretical calculations and experimental results suggest that the strongly correlated material SmB6 may be a realization of a topological Kondo insulator. We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on SmB6 in order to eluc ...

Topological quantum materials have stimulated growing attention because they reveal novel aspects of condensed matter physics and point to new opportunities in materials science, in particular for thermoelectrics. Here, we experimentally study thermoelectr ...

Few-layer thick MoSe2 and WSe2 possess non-trivial spin textures with sizable spin splitting due to the inversion symmetry breaking embedded in the crystal structure and strong spin-orbit coupling. We report a spin-resolved photoemission study of MoSe2 and ...

A strong spin-orbit interaction leads to a Rashba-type splitting of the bulk bands of BiTeCl, which results in toroidal Fermi surfaces with distinct spin structures depending on the chemical potential. Here, we present spin-and angle-resolved photoelectron ...

The topology of a topological material can be encoded in its surface states. These surface states can only be removed by a bulk topological quantum phase transition into a trivial phase. Here we use photoemission spectroscopy to image the formation of prot ...

The 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) found at the surface of SrTiO3 and related interfaces has attracted significant attention as a promising basis for oxide electronics. In order to utilize its full potential, the response of this 2DEG to structural chan ...

The possibility to manipulate spin textures is of central importance for their utilisation in functional materials. Here it will be shown how the resulting changes in the spin texture of the electronic structure can directly be imaged by spin- and angle-re ...

Studies on oxide quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (q2DEG) have been a playground for the discovery of novel and sometimes unexpected phenomena, like the reported magnetism at the surface of SrTiO3 (001) and at the interface between nonmagnetic LaAlO3 and ...

Topological Kondo insulators have been proposed as a new class of topological insulators in which non-trivial surface states reside in the bulk Kondo band gap at low temperature due to strong spin-orbit coupling. In contrast to other three-dimensional topo ...

Altermagnets are characterized by non-relativistic alternating spin splitting in the band structure and collinear compensated magnetic moments in real space. They combine the advantages of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order, exhibiting time-reversal ...

Lifted Kramers spin degeneracy (LKSD) has been among the central topics of condensed-matter physics since the dawn of the band theory of solids. It underpins established practical applications as well as current frontier research, ranging from magnetic-mem ...

Macroscopic ferroelectric order in alpha-GeTe with its noncentrosymmetric lattice structure leads to a giant Rashba spin splitting in the bulk bands due to strong spin-orbit interaction. Direct measurements of the bulk band structure using soft x-ray angle ...

We developed a Bayesian spline model for real-time mass concentrations of particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, PM1, and PM0.3) measured simultaneously in the personal breathing zone of Parisian subway workers. The measurements were performed by GRIMM, a gravim ...
