Nanoscale detection and control of the magnetic order underpins a spectrum of condensed-matter research and device functionalities involving magnetism. The key principle involved is the breaking of time-reversal symmetry, which in ferromagnets is generated ...

We study the fate of the surface states of Bi2Se3 under disorder with strength larger than the bulk gap, caused by neon sputtering and nonmagnetic adsorbates. We find that neon sputtering introduces strong but dilute defects, which can be modeled by a unit ...

We report on the measurement of the Rashba-type spin splitting of the Shockley surface state on Cu(1 1 1) by spin- and angle-resolved photoemission at room temperature. Along the spatial direction expected for a Rashba-type effect the measured spin splitti ...

By measuring the spin polarization of GeTe films as a function of light polarization we observed that the bulk states are fully spin polarized in the initial state, in strong contrast with observations for other systems with a strong spin-orbit interaction ...

Monolayer structures of Pb on Si(111) attracted recently considerable interest as superconductivity was found in these truly two-dimensional (2D) structures. In this study, we analyzed the electronic surface band structure of the so-called striped incommen ...

The two-dimensional electron gas at the surface of titanates gathered attention due to its potential to replace conventional silicon based semiconductors in the future. In this study, we investigated films of the parent perovskite CaTiO3, grown by pulsed l ...

Two-dimensional electron liquids (2DELs) have increasing technological relevance for ultrafast electronics and spintronics, yet significant gaps in their fundamental understanding are exemplified on the prototypical SrTiO3. We correlate the exact SrTiO3(00 ...

Low-dimensional materials are susceptible to electronic instabilities such as charge density waves (CDWs), originating from a divergence in the Lindhard electron response function, combined with a finite electron-phonon coupling strength. In this paper, we ...

EuCd2As2 is now widely accepted as a topological semimetal in which a Weyl phase is induced by an external magnetic field. We challenge this view through firm experimental evidence using a combination of electronic transport, optical spectroscopy, and exci ...

The interplay between spin-orbit interaction and magnetic order is one of the most active research fields in condensed matter physics and drives the search for materials with novel, and tunable, magnetic and spin properties. Here we report on a variety of ...

The Eisenbud-Wigner-Smith (EWS) time delay of photoemission depends on the phase term of the matrix element describing the transition. Because of an interference process between partial channels, the photoelectrons acquire a spin polarization which is also ...

Temperature dependence of the electronic structure of SmB6 is studied by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) down to 1 K. We demonstrate that there is no essential difference for the dispersions of the surface states below and ...

The surface of a material is not only a window into its bulk physical properties, but also hosts unique phenomena important for understanding the properties of a solid as a whole. Surface sensitive techniques, like ARPES (Angle-resolved photoemission spect ...

In this study, we identify EuCd2X2 (for X = P, As, Sb) as a series of magnetic semiconductors. We examine how the band gap of the series responds to X changing from phosphorus (P), to arsenic (As), and finally antimony (Sb). We characterize the samples usi ...

We have investigated the spin texture of surface Fermi arcs in the recently discovered Weyl semimetal TaAs using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental results demonstrate that the Fermi arcs are spin polarized. The measured ...

Attosecond time-resolved photoemission from the differently terminated BiTeCl surfaces yield a photoelectron streaking that cannot be explained by bulk propagation effects alone. Instead, the atomic scale electronic structure and dynamical screening for bo ...

Photoelectrons produced from the excitation of spin-degenerate states in solids can have a sizable spin polarization, which is related to the phase of interfering channels in the photoemission matrix elements. Such spin polarization can be measured by spin ...

Owing to their exceptional mechanical, electronic, and phononic transport properties, compositionally complex alloys, including high-entropy alloys, represent an important class of materials. However, the interplay between chemical disorder and electronic ...

Entanglement of the spin-orbit and magnetic order in multiferroic materials bears a strong potential for engineering novel electronic and spintronic devices. Here, we explore the electron and spin structure of ferroelectric alpha-GeTe thin films doped with ...

After photon absorption, electrons from a dispersive band of a solid require a finite time in the photoemission process before being photoemitted as free particles, in line with recent attosecond-resolved photoemission experiments. According to the Eisenbu ...
