In the present work, we study the fabrication of self-cleaning antibacterial surfaces, active under indoor or outdoor light. In order to obtain the highest activity with the lowest complexity we assess mild conditions of preparation (temperatures), pre-tre ...

The Fenton reaction was discovered over 120 years ago, yet our understanding of the complete reaction mechanism of the seemingly simple iron and hydrogen peroxide reaction (Fe + H2O2) remains unclear, thus limiting its full potential. In this work, the aim ...

Over the last years, the photo-Fenton process has been established as an effective, green alternative to chemical disinfection of waters and wastewaters. Microorganisms' inactivation is the latest success story in the application of this process at near-ne ...

This work uncovers the implications of the estimation of exogenous inactivation rates for E. coli after the initial lag phase, and presents a strategy for the determination of the second-order inactivation rate constants (k2nd) of these bacteria with relev ...

Solar disinfection (SODIS) is a WHO-accepted intervention method for improving water sources in developing countries. Despite its effectiveness, the limitations of long exposure and bacterial regrowth risk demand further improvement of the practice. In thi ...

This study presents the performance of GF-mats loaded with TiO2 and Cu under solar/visible light leading to bacterial inactivation and pollutant degradation at both solid-air and solid-liquid interfaces. The GF-mats show effective water disinfection, self- ...

Solar disinfection (SODIS) is a well-accepted intervention method, leading to an improvement in contaminated water sources. In this work, we attempted to further enhance the bacterial inactivation process during light exposure. By means of iron oxide addit ...

A light-weight granular mixed-quartz sand (denoted as L-GQS) combined with stirring-assisted bubble column reactor was firstly applied in catalytic ozonation of atrazine. The L-GQS, with a density of 2.36 g cm(-3) and average diameter of ca. of 4 mm, was r ...

In this work, the near-neutral photo-Fenton process, as a means of wastewater disinfection, was enhanced by the addition of Organic Acids (OAs), namely citric, ascorbic, tartaric and caffeic acid. The addition of OAs exhibited significant bacterial inactiv ...

In this work, the use of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) against the degradation of an emerging contaminant has been subjected under systematic investigation. The optimization of treatment of the anti- depressant drug Venlafaxine (VFA) was performed, u ...

A 4-factor, multilevel, full factorial design of 240 experiments was performed in order to investigate the effect of temperature on the inactivation efficiency of spiked Escherichia coli in simulated solar disinfection of a synthetic secondary effluent. Th ...

In this study, the effect of MS2 bacteriophage on the inactivation of its Escherichia coli host was evaluated in an effort to recreate some the main factors governing solar disinfection of wastewater (namely microbial growth, infection, photonic flux). As ...

Insight is provided in this study for the effect of the TiO2film densification/compactness on polyethy-lene (PE-TiO2) by sputtering TiO2at two very different energy levels. Uniform, adhesive low energy filmswere prepared by direct current magnetron sputter ...

The present bi-partite work describes the development and validation of a mechanistic kinetic model of SODIS E. coli inactivation, enhanced with H2O2. In this first part, the mechanism of the baseline dark phenomena is modelled. A mechanistic model involvi ...

In this work, the antimicrobial effects of the photo-Fenton process on yeast cells were tested (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), an essential eukaryotic unicellular model of living cells. Near-neutral pH was used in all studies, while iron sulfate and iron citra ...

This is the second part of a comprehensive review article about photo-Fenton reaction at near-neutral pH used for water and wastewater disinfection. In this part, a critical revision of the fundamental physical, chemical and biological parameters affecting ...

Co-sputtered TiO2-Cu polyester (TiO2-Cu-PES) under actinic light induced bacterial reduction of E. coli in the presence of O2 (air) and under anaerobic conditions. The bacterial inactivation/oxidation proceeds in the absence of O2 (air) probably due to the ...

In this study, the photoreactivation and the modification of dark repair of E. coli in a simulated secondary effluent were investigated after initial irradiation under different conditions. The simulated solar exposure of the secondary wastewater was follo ...

By use of photochemical modelling we show that acesulfame K (ACE) can undergo photodegradation in surface waters, mainly by reaction with (OH)-O-center dot and possibly (CDOM)-C-3* (the triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter). With the pos ...

In this study, the effect of light intermittence on solar disinfection of secondary treated wastewater was investigated. Synthetic secondary effluent was spiked with Escherichia coli and submitted to 3 different light intermittence regimes by circulating t ...
