High-speed actuation of laser frequency(1)is critical in applications using lasers and frequency combs(2,3), and is a prerequisite for phase locking, frequency stabilization and stability transfer among optical carriers. For example, high-bandwidth feedbac ...

Photonic chip-based soliton microcombs have shown rapid progress and have already been used in many system-level applications. There has been substantial progress in realizing soliton microcombs that rely on compact laser sources, culminating in devices th ...

Coherent ranging, also known as frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) laser-based light detection and ranging (lidar)(1) is used for long-range three-dimensional distance and velocimetry in autonomous driving(2,3). FMCW lidar maps distance to frequenc ...

Dissipative solitons are self-localized structures resulting from a double balance between dispersion and nonlinearity as well as dissipation and a driving force. They occur in a wide variety of fields ranging from optics, hydrodynamics to chemistry and bi ...

Octave-spanning, self-referenced frequency combs are applied in diverse fields ranging from precision metrology to astrophysical spectrometer calibration. The octave-spanning optical bandwidth is typically generated through non-linear spectral broadening o ...

Self-referencing turns pulsed laser systems into self-referenced frequency combs. Such frequency combs allow counting of optical frequencies and have a wide range of applications. The required optical bandwidth to implement self-referencing is typically ob ...

Optical-frequency combs, that is spectra of equidistant coherent optical lines, have revolutionized the precision measurements of time and frequency. In 2007 a new method to generate optical frequency combs was discovered. In contrast to conventional gener ...

Dissipative Kerr soliton generation using self-injection-locked III-V lasers has enabled fully integrated hybrid microcombs that operate in turnkey mode and can access microwave repetition rates. Yet, continuous-wave-driven soliton microcombs exhibit low e ...

Temporal-dissipative Kerr solitons are self-localized light pulses sustained in driven nonlinear optical resonators. Their realization in microresonators has enabled compact sources of coherent optical frequency combs as well as the study of dissipative so ...

Temporal dissipative Kerr solitons in a continuous-wave laser-driven nonlinear optical microresonator enable compact, high-repetition rate sources of ultrashort pulses and coherent broadband optical frequency combs. A central parameter in the soliton forma ...

Continuous-wave-driven Kerr nonlinear microresonators give rise to self-organization in terms of dissipative Kerr solitons, which constitute optical frequency combs that can be used to generate low-noise microwave signals. Here, by applying either amplitud ...

Microcombs provide a path to broad-bandwidth integrated frequency combs with low power consumption, which are compatible with wafer-scale fabrication. Yet, electrically-driven, photonic chip-based microcombs are inhibited by the required high threshold pow ...

We generate 100-GHz soliton microcombs in a photonic integrated high-Q Si3N4 microresonator using an ultra-compact, high-power and low-frequency-noise semiconductor-based laser. The soliton is initiated via direct current tuning of the laser. (C) 2019 The ...

We demonstrate an architecture for massively parallel frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) laser ranging (LiDAR) by transferring linear chirps of a single narrow linewidth laser onto all soliton comb teeth though generation of a dissipative Kerr soli ...

Microwave photonic technologies, which upshift the carrier into the optical domain, have facilitated the generation and processing of ultra-wideband electronic signals at vastly reduced fractional bandwidths. For microwave photonic applications such as rad ...

Thermodynamic noise places a fundamental limit on the frequency stability of dielectric optical resonators. Here, we present the characterization of thermorefractive noise in photonic-chip-based silicon-nitride (Si3N4) microresonators and show that thermor ...

Using photonic integrated silicon nitride microresonators of quality factor exceeding 15 million, we demonstrate 19-GHz-repetition-rate single soliton with 35 mW optical power, and characterize the phase noise of the repetition rate in the K-band microwave ...

Using phase-engineered coherent laser pulses produced by gain-switched semiconductor lasers, we generate low-power-threshold soliton microcombs whose repetition frequencies are in the X-band and K-band microwave ranges. (c) 2021TheAuthor(s) ...

The synthesis of ultralow-noise microwaves is of both scientific and technological relevance for timing, metrology, communications and radio-astronomy. Today, the lowest reported phase noise signals are obtained via optical frequency-division using mode-lo ...

Recent works on Kerr frequency combs demonstrated the possibility to simultaneously generate multiple soliton states with different group velocities in a single microresonator, which could be beneficial for many applications utilizing dual-comb systems. In ...
