Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in the photochemical transformation of organic contaminants in natural aquatic systems. The present study focuses on the characterization of a specific effect previously observed for electron-rich phenols ...

N,O- and N,S-azoles and -azolines are common functional groups in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and natural products. Their fate during ozone-based water treatment processes is unknown due to a lack of kinetic and mechanistic information on their reaction ...

Chlorothalonil, a fungicide applied for decades worldwide, has recently been banned in the European Union (EU) and Switzerland due to its carcinogenicity and the presence of potentially toxic transformation products (TPs) in groundwater. The spread and con ...

Benzotriazoles (BTs) and benzothiazoles (BTHs) are extensively used chemicals found in a wide range of household and industrial products. They are chemically stable and are therefore ubiquitous in the aquatic environment. The present study focuses on the p ...

Oxidative treatment of seawater in coastal and shipboard installations is applied to control biofouling and/or minimize the input of noxious or invasive species into the marine environment. This treatment allows a safe and efficient operation of industrial ...

The potential of laccase-mediator systems (LMS) for the removal and detoxification of two wastewater micropollutants, the antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and the herbicide isoproturon (IPN), was assessed. The influence of various parameters on micropollu ...

This study focuses on the effects of ozonation on the optical and photochemical properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Upon ozonation, a decrease in light absorption properties of DOM was observed concomitantly with a large increase in singlet oxyge ...

Despite their potential carcinogenicity and probable formation during water disinfection processes, little is known about the occurrence of other nitro(so) compounds than a few specific N-nitroso compounds such as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). An analytic ...

Bacterial spores pose significant risks to human health, yet the inactivation of spores is challenging due to their unique structures and chemical compositions. This study investigated the synergistic effect between surfactants and chlorine on the inactiva ...

Pre-oxidation is often used before disinfection with chlorine to decrease the reactivity of the water matrix and mitigate the formation of regulated disinfection byproducts (DBPs). This study provides insights on the impact of oxidative pre-treatment with ...

The abatement of 9 polychloro-1,3-butadienes (CBDs) in aqueous solution by ozone, UV-C(254 nm) photolysis, and the corresponding advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) (i.e., O-3/H2O2 and UV/H2O2) was investigated. The following parameters were determined for ...

Virus inactivation mechanisms can be elucidated by methods which measure the loss of specific virus functionality (e.g., host attachment, genome internalization, genome replication). Genome functionality is frequently assessed by PCR-based methods, which a ...

Combining iron with a tetraamido-macrocyclic ligand (Fe-TAML) as a catalyst and with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as the bulk oxidant is a process that has been suggested for the oxidative abatement of micropollutants during water treatment. In this study, the ...

In this study methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin abatement in a surface water by conventional ozonation and the electro-peroxone (E-peroxone) process was compared. Batch tests with addition of ozone (03) stock solutions and semi-batch tests with continuous ...

Recently, we suggested that hypobromous acid (HOBr) is a sink for the marine volatile organic sulfur compound dimethyl sulfide (DMS). However, HOBr is also known to react with reactive moieties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) such as phenolic compounds t ...

In this study, the changes in UV absorbance at 254 nm (UVA(254)) and electron donating capacity (EDC) were investigated as surrogate indicators for assessing removal of micropollutants and bromate formation during ozonation of wastewater effluents. To meas ...

Oxidative treatment of iodide-containing waters can form toxic iodinated disinfection byproducts (I-DBPs). To better understand the fate of iodine, kinetics, products, and stoichiometries for the reactions of ferrate(VI) with iodide (I-) and hypoiodous aci ...

Oxidation experiments (chlorine, ozone and bromine) were carried out with synthetic saline waters containing natural organic matter (NOM) extracts and model compounds to evaluate the potential of these surrogates to mimic the formation of brominated trihal ...

Recent studies suggested that long-lived photooxidants (LLPO), which are reactive intermediates formed during irradiation of dissolved organic matter (DOM), may consist of phenoxyl radicals derived from phenolic moieties of the DOM. Besides the well-studie ...

Pre-oxidation is commonly used to mitigate the formation of byproducts during post-disinfection. A comparative study of the impact of four pre-oxidants, ozone (O-3), chlorine dioxide (ClO2), permanganate (Mn(vii)) and ferrate (Fe(vi)), on the formation of ...
