Chip-based optical waveguides formed by a silicon nitride (Si3N4) core and a silicon dioxide (SiO2) cladding are an important platform for low loss waveguides and nonlinear optics. High Q microresonators based on this material system have become a standard ...

Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a widely employed, minimally invasive bio-medical imaging technique, which requires a broadband light source, typically implemented by super-luminescent diodes. Recent advances in soliton based photonic ...

Solitons are waveforms that preserve their shape while propagating, as a result of a balance of dispersion and nonlinearity(1,2). Soliton-based data transmission schemes were investigated in the 1980s and showed promise as a way of overcoming the limitatio ...

Octave-spanning, self-referenced frequency combs are applied in diverse fields ranging from precision metrology to astrophysical spectrometer calibration. The octave-spanning optical bandwidth is typically generated through non-linear spectral broadening o ...

A tunable and reconfigurable optical aggregation system is experimentally demonstrated. Optical Nyquist pulses are generated on multiple channels using a microresonator-based Kerr optical frequency comb and insertion of uniform lines by an intensity modula ...

An ideal photonic integrated circuit for nonlinear photonic applications requires high optical nonlinearities and low loss. This work demonstrates a heterogeneous platform by bonding lithium niobate (LN) thin films onto a silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide ...

The generation of dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators has provided a route to compact frequency combs of high repetition rate, which have already been employed for optical frequency synthesizers, ultrafast ranging, coherent telecommunicati ...

We experimentally demonstrate KK detection of four 20-Gbaud 16-QAM channels after 50-km transmission using two soliton Kerr combs at transmitter and receiver. The frequency comb coherence enables a shared phase noise estimation among multiple channels. (C) ...

Silicon nitride has emerged as a prominent platform for building photonics integrated circuits. While its nonlinear properties based on third-order effects have been successfully exploited, an efficient second harmonic generation in standard stoichiometric ...

We experimentally insert a flexible number of electro-optical (EO) comb lines into a Kerr frequency comb via EO modulation and demonstrate the use of combined Kerr and EO combs as light sources in coherent communications. The number of EO lines inserted in ...

The generation of dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators allow compact high repetition rate frequency combs. A particularly promising platform is photonic integrated Si3N4 microresonators. Yet to date, soliton formation in Si3N4 microresonato ...

Optical solitons are propagating pulses of light that retain their shape because nonlinearity and dispersion balance each other. In the presence of higher-order dispersion, optical solitons can emit dispersive waves via the process of soliton Cherenkov rad ...

We experimentally demonstrate Kramers-Kronig detection of four 20 Gbaud 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulated (QAM) channels after 50 km fiber transmission using two soliton Kerr combs as signal sources and local oscillators. The estimated carrier phase at the ...

Phase coherently linking optical-to-radio frequencies with femtosecond mode-locked laser frequency combs has enabled counting the cycles of light and is the basis of optical clocks, absolute frequency synthesis, tests of fundamental physics, and improved s ...

Dissipative Kerr solitons have recently been generated in optical microresonators, enabling ultrashort optical pulses at microwave repetition rates, that constitute coherent and numerically predictable Kerr frequency combs. However, the seeding and excitat ...

We experimentally demonstrate optical multicasting using Kerr frequency combs generated from a Si3N4 microresonator. We obtain Kerr combs in two states with different noise properties by varying the pump wavelength in the resonator and investigate the effe ...

On-chip Kerr frequency combs are potentially promising to enhance many applications because of their broad-band operation and chip-scale integration. Such combs offer various mutually coherent optical carriers that can potentially be used as both coherent ...

Using the photonic Damascene reflow process, we present single soliton formation in 99-GHz-FSR Si3N4 microresonators of Q-factor exceeding 15 x 10(6), with less than 10 mW optical power. ...

We experimentally demonstrate that dissipative Kerr solitons generated in different spectral regions can stably coexist in a single optical microresonator enabling spectral multiplexing of soliton microcombs. (C) 2020 The Author(s) ...

Sinc-shaped temporal pulse trains have a spectrally efficient, rectangular Nyquist spectrum. We demonstrate the simultaneous and reconfigurable optical generation of multiple Nyquist-shaped wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) channels having temporal sin ...
